I checked out these bands on a whim after my hairdresser mentioned his band, The Infirmary were playing a gig. Both bands turned out to be amazingly superb, with a dark rock sound infused with delightful clean synthpop backing.

As usual, lighting conditions were horrible with the colours all terribly washed out, so I went for a nice and moody high contrast b&w which I'm quite pleased with.

All shots with 20D + either Canon 50mm f/1.8 or Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 @ either ISO 1600 or 3200. The rest of the images can be viewed on my Rocksluts web site here (http://www.rocksluts.net.au) or the gallery on Fasterlouder here (http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/photos2/060223-tlc)

Comments and constructive critique is most welcome.

They are all great shots, but I love the first one - It is fantastic. The best ways are probably covered in a thousand threads on here somewhere but how do you generally convert your colour images into b+w?

Ditto that.

I would've liked to have seen the singer's guitar a bit, but I won't be picky. That's a real nice shot, and it works well with the B&W...

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like them!

RE b&w conversions there are no doubt heaps of ways to do it, but here is my standard technique. I shoot in RAW and convert using CS2. I tend to pump the contrast and desturate the image completely. Then, I'll run the outputted file (I've reverted to using boring 8 bit JPEG for output of the files now) into CS2. I then choose selective colour, blacks and I'll push up the black channel until the image has some nice solid black.

Steve: I know what you mean, but as we all know, you can't go back and reshoot or re-pose the subject after the fact, but here's another with the whole of his gorgeous Gretsch in frame:

Hi Angus, very nice work mate and great choice of b&w. The captured action conveys the feeling quite well.

Lol!

I like #1 and 3 and the second drummer.
Don't know about the BW conversion though. Seems a bit 'grayinsh' to me.
I mostly use PS's channel mixer for getting BW images. You might try that, gives very much control.

I like that shot a lot!

Well, my work doesn't generally provide for using B&W but I can see that some of my images would really benefit, sigh. Nice stuff, Angus, but it feels like the lighting was really extra poor there!

Thanks Dwight, they were less than ideal conditions, yes! I know b&w conversion is not needed to make for compelling images of shows @ Chumash and I'm very jealous of that.

It's all rock'n'roll though and I'm just pleased to know that I can return with publishable images from even the most adverse of live performance conditions.

Absolutely ... I expect that I would have great difficulty keeping up with you in your venues ... even if I got the lens cap off! :-) I really love the intimacy you get!
