Well, I don't post often in this section...not because I don't want to, but because I can't. I wish I could share more of the images I take, but licensing doesn't allow it often enough. Anyways...Here is a shot of the band Nada Surf I took tonight. It was intentionally done arsty, I already had my required shots done. The band had some great stage props to play around with on my camera! (added one more).

These were shot with a 1dMkIIn and my 70-200 IS w/my 1.4xII. I was about 90-100 from FOS in these two.

Very nice, I like the 1st shot! (I would have cropped off the mirror in the top left corner though.

Thanks, I thought about cropping it too. Somehow I like the play of depth with it and that you can see other band members in the left sphere. I do need to bring the right side in a little tighter. These were a very quick post a couple of hours after the show and at 1:00 AM local.

This stage setup did give me some cool ideas for studio work!

Phil, what sort of licensing disallows you to exhibit for criticism? I haven't had any trouble ... and even the one "special" release I signed only limited me to use that was specific to the particular concert such as reviews and commentary.

In my always wildly humble opinion, cropping out the reflective "orb" from the first picture would destroy the image.

As for licensing, sounds kinda' odd to me. Unless you're undertaking a commercial venture, or are being paid to not do anything with them, I can't see how it wouldn't be allowed.

Can you elaborate?

Steve

I do shoot commercially for a guitar manufacturer...primarily their Entertainment and Relations Dept.

I own the copyright for the images, per our agreement. But, I also give them first shot at releasing them whether it be for advertisement or press. I shoot both location and live.

It's not so much that I can't, but I am working different licensing terms for current images. I just have to be sensitive when posting publicly, as to not cost myself business. Especially, when my photo credentials for shows are being supplied by them. ;)

Steve, I see more and more why you suggest that my job is the "Dream Job" ... I am just having a conversation with the local newspaper photo editor about the crap that his people are put through to shoot legitimate editorial images ... some are even limiting him to two songs, 2 & 3, which I have only had once. Phil, it is for certain that each group is different and many performers develop bizarre requirements ... Englebert Humperdinck would not allow me to shoot him, but even more weird was that he would not allow the announcer to say his name when introducing the performance. We have had a few other eccentrics, but you never know who will turn out to be really great to work with ... Tony Bennett's girl and ZZ Top's girl were both totally easy and ace to work with, while Brooks & Dunn's whole staff was simply superb. I won't name the list of a$$holes.

I totally know what you are saying. Luckily, I usually have no problem with the artists. I too, can generally shoot the whole show if I want. Unfortunately for me it has more to do with travel schedules, for running into problems.

For instance, last week I was supposed to shoot a promo set (in studio), of artist and guitar, that was going to be used by the largest national consumer electronics chain and it was cancelled 1 hour before the shoot due to a tour bus accident enroute to Seattle. The powers at be are trying to reschedule it through the record label as a "make good" and fly the artist back up here for one day. We'll see..at least it was a legitimate accident though, and more importantly nobody was hurt.

Also luckily for me, I don't have to deal with the weird requests like Mr. Humperdinks! :D I'm always there for one reason...to shoot somebody specific, and the parameters are always worked out prior to me hitting will-call.

I understand ... I am fortunate in that as the house photographer I have a photo ID badge and All Access badge, everyone on staff, especially security, knows me, and I have a lot of flexibility within the parameters. Once I retire from my day job (in five to six years) I hope to do more extensive shooting at other venues. Ain't life grand! :-)

Hey, Dwight, I know why Humperdinck doesn't want the announcer saying his name. My understanding is that, some years back, an announcer said the last name, but without the inclusion of the letter "n".

As far as I can tell, it's a true story...

If everyone whose name was mispronounced (especially names chosen as an adult like this one) thereafter would not allow it to be said at all then none of us would be able to figure out how to address anybody! You've got to need drugs if you are this fragile.
