Anyone use the i950 to print their pix.

Having a heck of a time getting the images from the printer to match the screen - any advice?

Also noticing that printed images on close exam seem to almost have a white haze layer on them.


Using 4x6 glossy plus paper. Images from 10D camera.

I've had my i950 for a while, but really hadn't paid much attention to the fidelity of the prints to the Photoshop files until recently. The prints, although very clear and bright, do tend to differ somewhat from what's being displayed on the monitor.

I'm using a good quality photo paper, but not Canon's own (as they recommend). I'll pick up some of that when I can find it and see if that makes a difference---I suspect it won't. Next, I'll start playing around with printer settings and will report back on what success I've had, if any.

Obviously it's a matter of calibration, and that will take some time and experimentation. I, too, would appreciate hearing from others who've already gone through that.

All in all, though, I love the printer. Not nearly so much as the camera, however.

I am using an i950 with a mac running OSX and OS9 so far it works just fine. No printer will print perfect out of the box, you almost always have to do a little set up. You have to calibrate your monitor then make some test prints and calibrate your printing profile a bit but once you do that it prints like nobody's business!

I am no PC expert but there should be some sort of Gamma set up menu in your control panels or software that came with your monitor. Failing that, colorvision makes calibration tools such as the spyder. Perhaps a PC guy will have a better answer.....

If you have photshop in the control panel there will be a utility called adobe gamma run it and follow the on screen instructions!
A bit more rough and ready way is to print a kodak colour control patch then hold it to the screen and ajust the best you can!
There are also variouse monitor calibration things on the net! just type monitor calibration and search!

I have the i950 and the i9100. I get excellent results with both printers. Of course, I use Canon inks and Canon papers. I use the Easy-PhotoPrint s/w that came with the printers. This software allows me to set the media types correctly.
The Canon papers do cost more but they will give you the best results. I shopped around and found that www.canogacamera.com have the best prices on Canon papers (especially the 13x19 size). If anyone can find a cheaper place, please do share.

I read that the other good but less expensive are
* Ilford Galerie - Smooth Gloss Paper from Sam's Club ($25 for 100 sheets 8.5x11)
* Office Depot Premium High-Gloss Photo Paper from Office Depot of course ($28 for 100 sheets 8.5x11)

I also read that Kodak papers would not give you good results on Canon printers.

if your printer has a choice of printing "Adobe RGB" or "sRGB" make sure you try the "sRGB" your colours will be richer.... try that

Only have Adobe PS elements at the moment, but I will look there for gamma match.

Printer-monitor-camera color management is one of the ultimate pains in the rear!

There are quite a few good threads on the subject though. But you can not expect your prints to look exactly like your monitor,. or your monitor to show you exactly what the camera has taken,. star reading on color management and you will go nuts just tryoing to understand how it is even remotel possible to pull such a feat off!

You know - I've had problems getting good images from my 10D. I've been going to quite a few forums to see what solutions others have tried. It seems to be a pretty widespread issue to get good image quality on photographic paper. Everyone points out the focusing issue - maybe there's a color management issue also. I've shut off the EXIF, changed the color space to Adobe RGB when shooting - tried to Adobe Gammaize my monitor and it's still kind of hit or miss. Why buy some Spyder for a few hundred bucks and then the technology changes again. Prints at home are not cheap. I've gotten great prints from scans, also from my Olympus 360D(L)(?) - a point and shoot. The flash pictures are great color saturation, the pictures shot in the shade come out with out much manipulation. Why isn't it that easy with the 10D? I know it's not a point and shoot but all the monitor and printer modifications that have to be done is kind of ridiculus. Oh well, I have a Best Buy down the block from me. I took my files there to be printed - wow! At 29 cents per print - I may not be doing much printing at home. The young lady there also let's me behind the counter to do my own stuff. I did 20 4x6's in about 10 minutes. Modifications and printing.
Oh well - just my thoughts.
