Apologies for the cluttered background, there's no such thing as "uncluttered" in our house!
Oh tell me about it! Trying to find a blank space as a clean backdrop is a nightmare!

Mine works pretty well, the lighting isn't too harsh, and that tilt-down thing on the top of the can helps to light the subject evenly, you need to get pretty close so without it you will get a black "curtain" because of the shadow.

here's my newest set-up(shown on my film camera since i used my 40D)...i picked up an older canon ring flash that is for film cameras cheap off of ebay...it only outputs at either full strength, or i can use half of it...it has a little light that is great for lighting up the subject before shooting...you just have to figure out the settings to dial it into before using...i might get a ND filter so i don't need to stop down to f16...so far i'm really pleased with it

For now I have a simple rig. I use one or two macro rails to get the flash where I need it. The flash is mounted on my tripod ballhead. For the most part the lighting is not the problem, it is generally that I cannot focus without a large amount of luck.
Yes, the term useless does ring a bell with me.
I have an MT-24EX on order, so I can learn to fail with even more gear :o
Still, as it stands this is the rig I use..
PS I have the new MT-24EX. Just imagine a camera with an MT24 on the end of the MP-E even more basic looking.

Two updated rigs
1. Made a second diffuser out of a disposable noodle bowl, making a second diffuser inside which not only helps soften the light, but stops the flash from moving in further. Place on a bracketed flash it works great as a macro flash
The added benefit is that it works great as a bounce diffuser since the bowl allows enough light through for catch light

I have a subtle variaton to the Canon 40D, Sigma 150mm f/2.8, kenko extension tube, sigma 1.4x TC, mt-24ex. It comes in at up to 2.8x magnification.
(Camera not included in photo because I needed to use it to take this image...and my camera phone is the worlds most efficient image noise generator in the world..I'm absolutely convinced.)
My diffusers make a significant improvement for lighting with the mt-24ex given the min. focusing distance. It's not as adaptable as I'd like... The way the 24ex is set up stock, the flashes are too close to the lens, in my opinion, in relation of the min focusing distance of the 150mm lens--even with the tubes.
Just give me time and give me bugs--I'll learn to do this macro thing one way or another... (I just put this together, and now it's winter... Arrrrrgggg.....)

You're right, you won't hurt anything. But it is a lot less convenient. You loose the ability to have the aperture wide open for framing and focusing, and have it automatically stop down. That said, it's a great way to do macro with things you already have and can use for other things, rather than buying a $500-$1000 dedicated macro lens. I used this method for quite a while before finally biting the bullet and getting an MP-E.

I like your standoffs for the twin flash heads, I have been looking for something to do just that for some time.
Going to let us in on that secret ingredient?

these are Kaiser flash shoe, 2 in each side to rise the flash heads a bit..... no secret ingredient, I just put small glass balls, I do not know their specific name.. a small balls of glasses around 0.5mm in diameter I put five inside each diffuser... I notice they scatter the light that comes from the flash head.. they give me nice lighting (at least to my tast)... here is an example..

I'll be purchasing a Lumiquest diffuser this week and haven't decided on a bracket yet. The price tag on C shaped brackets is nice. I really like the setup that BlackClouds has in the first picture. Any feedback on either setup and where to buy? Thanks!

my setup from bottom to top:
-Acratech GV2 ballhead
-Wimberley perpendicular Plate Module M-8(this only used if you dont have lens collar)
-Wimberley Universla camera body plate P-5
-Wimberley flash bracket Module M-1
-Wimberley macro arm flash bracket module
-Lumiquest soft box (to be honest I dont like the light from it, so I made DIY diffuser)

I forget, you need a cord to connect the flash to camera, I use canon OC-E3 with 430EXII....

Thank you for the information-I greatly appreciate it. Adorama had a c style clamp in stockthat matches my budget quite nicely. I ordered up the cord and box as well. Hopefully I'll have some respectable macro shots to post in the not too distant future.

Taking some ideas from this thread I finally made my own flash bracket. I used a bracket I found from some old camera gear, removed the flood light attachment on one end then made an arm with ball head at the top. Used a bike grip and some metal tubing. I machined a piece of aluminum for the base to get the flash up a bit higher. The tripod mount is not on center with the lens but it actualy works out ok. The bracket folds up which is also nice as it's easier to store.

Would the delta flash bracket with my 580 be better then a ring light. What are the differences? I see most of the rigs with brackets.

I have not used a ring light but what I like about the bracket method is that for flowers I can move it around and bring light in from different angles and the soft box gives a pleasing look.

A ring light often gives a rather flat-looking light, with few shadows or depth. It has its place, but most prefer adjustable lights so they can control the lighting angles.

That's one of the most incredible but also one of the least portable macro rigs I've seen so far. The external monitor seems great for stacking though.

What did you make that diffuser out of?

What did you make that diffuser out of?
I am still making modifications but it is essentially a bottle of body mist, the stuff girls use to smell all delicious and fruitful, and I found it in our recycling bin. Next I sanded the entire bottle with 60 grit sandpaper until it was no longer transparent. I measured how deep the lens could go into the bottle without cutting all the way through the bottle and I used a razor saw from a hobby shop to cut a hole in the bottle. I cut a small elbow out of plastic to support the front of the bottle and used a soldering iron to weld the plastic to the bottom of the bottle. Next I taped off the holes and spray painted the bottle black. After that I used electric tape to seal the space below the flash so that no light would leak and then I began testing the flash. It was still to bright so I began to add layers of scotch tape to diffuse more light and it worked alot better. The best thing about this diffuser is that it allows the pop up flash to be redirected down on top of my subject. I am going to try and add a concave upwards piece of plastic this tomorrow to further spread and diffuse the flash. I would also like to start using a linear polarized filter.

Will a bracket like this work fine?

Or will I also need a ball head?

How do you connect the LCD screen to your camera? Do you know if the 60D supports this?
By the way at first i thought the LCD was mounted on the fence :)
