(Yes the title is correct please don't bore me with information on the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM. I do mean the old EF 70-210mm F/4) ;)

Does anyone have any knowledge of or views on the optical quality of this old lens? I ask on behalf of a friend who has spotted one for sale and is wondering whether it's worth buying.

the lens is a push pull with slow focussing that takes okay pictures. it does have a great macro setting that i really like. if the lens is really mint and you really want it i would not pay more than $100.

and i have seen them go for much less on ebay.

This was my first Canon EF lens Glenn.

I used to shoot football with it for a number of years on an EOS600 body. It was nice to have the constant aperture throughout the zoom range.

The AF speed was acceptable - it must have been as I was using it for sports and I certainly got a more than reasonable number of sharp images. Obviously it was a bit on the noisy side.

Optically I recall it was OK as well. Better than a bog-standard consumer zoom, but obviously not L-standard.

I liked the push-pull zoom - very easy to use... and, as mentioned, it could focus pretty close as well.

I only upgraded it when I was able to afford the 70-200 f/2.8L.

It's a pretty good lens if it's available at a good price.
