Thanks, not not a huge amount of pp, just made the blacks darker, and added more contrast, then desaturated it a little. So no, easy really :)

How do you guys like this lens for somewhat low light shooting (IE some indoor arena shots). Im kinda torn between this (i like the IQ and the price tag) and the 55-250 IS because it has IS and to me that seems like it might be better for shooting indoors. I rarely lug a tripod around so i shoot a lot of handheld.

I've never tried it for indoor sports, but I'd have to say it would be too slow. If that's your main subject matter, I think I'd get the 2.8 version of the 70-200 (if that's the length you're looking at).

What type of shooting will you be doing?
Are you talking about a sports arena & shooting players on the move or stationary objects under arena lighting? There is a big difference between the two with regards to what type of lens & speed is needed.
I have the F4 IS version of this lens and shot part of a wedding ceremony with it indoors under relatively poor lighting. I was at F4 & ISO1000/1200 most of the time and the shutter speed was around 1/15 @ 180mm.
When no one was moving around, the pictures came out really sharp. IS and the static nature of the subjects made these shots possible. All bets are off though if the subjects are moving around. For this, you really need higher shutter speeds to stop the action. This means getting that extra stop offered by f2.8 glass AND higher ISO.
If you know most of your shots will be at the 200mm end, check out the Canon EF 200L f2.8 II for ~$650. It's a steal, and ties for the 2nd least expensive L lens that Canon makes. I almost picked this up instead of the F4 IS, but I shoot outdoors most of the time and didn't need as fast of glass.
I compared these two endlessly and from what I've read, the 200L also takes a 1.4x Teleconverter really well (makes it a 280mm F4 lens).
The 70-200 F2.8 (non-IS) runs about $1000 last I checked, so if you don't need zoom, you could easily save ~$350 if cost is a limiting factor.

I usually shoot mostly outdoors, i guess the option of shooting inside would be nice, but not for the pricetag. The only worry i have with the 70-200mm is on overcast days ya know?
Thanks a lot guys

Outdoors is no problem. The big advantage of the 70-200 is that you can shoot wide open with no worries.

Plus use a 1.4x teleconverter.
I use one on the 70-200 almost exclusively (turns it into a 98-280mm f5.6 lens) which is great if your in decent lighting situations. I also use it wide open most of the time & IQ is great.

I don't have the 55-250 but I have a 70-200 f/4 (non IS). If you are willing to do some PP that lens produces great results even indoors at ISO1600.
Outdoor overcast is not an issue. This lens is tack sharp even wide open .
IMHO there is no contest between the two. Any "L" lens will beat a consumer grade lens hands down. The built quality is another factor. Internal zoom (no tube poking out of the front) prevents lens creep. I have the 28-135 IS and this one creeps to the point of no return - very annoying.
Get your camera and go to your LPS and test both lenses on an overcast day and compare the results by using the default settings of your PP software.

Beautiful shots, everyone! As always when looking into these threads I get a STRONG impluse of spending money.
However, I just want to ask you what you think about my need of getting a 70-200mm f/4L.
Last year I was the photographer during an orienteering event. I had only my nifty-fifty but I believe I managed to capture some great shots. I learnt a lot. The main issue was that, when using f/2.8 (or even f/4.5), the runner had already moved so much closer to the camera that when the shutter closed I had an unsharp shot (despite fast shutter speeds). The AF of the nifty-fifty was (it's broken now!) so slow. I tackled the issue by shooting people from the side instead.
Just using a prime when shooting people running was irritating sometimes, I think. I don't think I reflected that much on it while shooting, but when I came home I had a lot of cut legs and only upper bodies captured. Too many of the shots had focus issues.
As I am going to be the photographer once again I you ask to help me find the answer to these questions:
Will the f4L work with AF-servo and be able to capture people sprinting towards the goal?
Bokeh. Many of you take excellent portrait shots. Are you using 200 mm and stepping back _a lot_ to achieve the maximum of bokeh? What I fear, from using the nifty-fifty is that the f4L won't be able to make subjects pop as much. Thanks in advance.

I found that shooting birds in day light is good enough with the f4. It's tough if the bird is fast (given the people would be fast and closer) but should be doable.

Okay so I've been looking through this thread to do some research on this lens (awesome shots by the way). I'm thinking about picking it up to compliment my 17-55mm. Does anyone have experience with this lens and shooting at a night time baseball game? I know i've heard that it doesn't do well in low light but in any MLB ballpark the lighting is pretty bright. I also plan to bring this to the zoo for some wildlife shots. Also, if I were to try to handhold my shots, indoors, under low light, would my external flash fix the problem? Thanks for any advice!

I struggled with my f/4 at a local park (bad lighting) but at an MLB park it might work OK. Shooting from the stands though it will still be fairly short. In order to get a decent exposure I had to sacrifice a little motion blur.

Wow the eagle shot is awesome! I was talking to a guy at a local camera shop and he was saying that thr f4 is actually sharper than the f2.8. Is I asked him how? He said that the less elements u have in the lens the better the iq. He demonstrasted his theory with both lenses at different apertures and he was right, the images taken with the f4 came out sharper!

This one caught my eye - really liking the colours, contrast and overall look of the shots this lens captures.

Wow! How did you get so close? I have been trying some birding with this lens, but I find it is mostly useless unless you get really close. However, I'm thankful that it's so sharp because the 100% crops don't look too bad at all.
haha, I was wondering the same thing. That's an incredible shot!
Tonight was my first test with this lens. Theres a Nutria that roams around a ditch near where I live and I figured he'd be a good little test subject.

Cheers Dave! Have to say that it was perhaps more luck than judgement as these little birds move so quickly. Had been focusing on it on the branch and then it just decided to up and leave, so snapped away several shots and this one worked really well.
No doubt the speed and accuracy of the focus - which I find is a step above my other lenses - helped!

Since no one is replying to my thread, might as well post here:
I'm kinda new here and I was pointed to this direction by a friend because I wanted know more about this lens. The 70-200mm f4 L non IS.
I have a EOS 450D, 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm IS. My interests are in portraits, landscapes and events (Cons, expositions).
Now my question is, is this lens worth getting? I've heard alot of reviews that this lens is so great for what its worth. So I just wanted to know first from owners of this lens as well as the 450D if this kind of pair up would work greatly. I would also like to know if this lens would work for landscapes / portraits and indoor photography.

It's got it's limitations, but what it does, it does well!
Indoor photography I think there are better lenses out there (with a faster aperture, or the IS version at the very least).
The good thing is if you buy one you can always sell it for what you paid for it (minus shipping possibly).
I had a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and this lens blows it away for image quality (sharpness). Even if I ever did buy another f/2.8 lens again, I would save this one for it's light weight and small size cause it's such a great outdoor telephoto lens. :)

Just look at the pics what the members post here, OK it's a long thread - so what, but that will give you a good idea of what you can shoot. I did not pay attention, but I believe almost every Canon camera has been used taking those pics.
Indoor sports for example: yes - Indor family in your living room - no

I rented the 200mm L 2.8 a short wile ago. Without going into the ever lasting argument between zoom and prime - I actually missed a couple of shots because I could not get the bird into the frame and backing up was not an option. On the other hand I have screwed a couple of shots with my 70-200 f4 as well due to low light and my inner IS failed...:(
Soft backgrounds are a little more creamy with the prime also. Under good light both lenses produce identical IQ - you have to be a pixel peeper to see a difference.
The 200 prime is a tad more heavy and does not draw the same attention. White lenses usually create some "oha" effect...
For me the 70-200 turned out to be the winner in that contest.
