Thanks. Its a tad bit of a cliche i know, but i couldn't resist. I tried to do the scene justice but it was beyond my capability- it truly was a beauty of an evening a real site, when the late evening light hit the valley everyone stood silent and watched it dance over the trees.

One from New York April'09. I took so many shots i will be PP'n till Christmas. Not that it needs an introduction, but to all those men who may be from Mars, or indeed women who may be from Venus, this is the Flat Iron building. Oh and this was snapped using a Canon 400D.

I just ordered this lens.... :) Only hoping that I don't reget not having the f/2.8... but as this is lighter, and super sharp... and I rarely shoot at f/2.8 on full frame because the DOF is soooo thin, I think I should be happy with it. Can't wait to play.
Awesome shots by everyone... What do you all think of needing the tripod collar? I notice it doesn't come with one.. but $150 for a collar seems a bit extreme to my budget... lol...

Not necessary in my opinion. The lens is easily light enough to be supported by the body on a tripod. Others have pointed out in the past that if you're often switching between portrait and landscape orientation while on a tripod, this is more easily accomplished using the collar, but I agree with you - it's a lot to pay for that small advantage.

The lens is light enough without the need for a collar, if your thinking it will provide greater freedom when using a support i would say use the $150 and put it toward a custom bracket pro sv. This lens is golden,it is so much lighter than the 2.8 version- a real bargain performer.

See thread below...it's on that very subject. Ironic, I was just thinking about a tripod ring today. I plan to get one of the cheap version even though it's a light lens. I would like to be able to spin it to the portrait mode while on a monopod or tripod.

I just shot the Junion PGA Championships this weekend, and let me tell you...with available light, this has got to be one of the fastest focusing lens that i have ever tried out. When the sun started to set, there was still enough light for this f4 lens to work properly without a higher ISO. When it started getting darker tho, the lens just completely shut down on me, even with a higher ISO, i couldnt seem to get focus on anything and the shutter speeds were too slow for anything in that focal length...
but...thats where my 50mm 1.8 came into action :)

Canon 30D 70-200mm F4
By the way, I am thinking of selling this lens, because it really doesn't serve me well with this focal length on a crop body. I want to get something like 35mm 1.4 L or the 24-70mm 2.8 L. What do you think?

If I could only have 2 lenses one would be a 17-55/24-70 (something like that) and a 70-200 L lens. I adore this on my 30d/Xti.. the only way it could be better is if it was 50-200mm. I'm sure on a 5D I'd never take it off.

I know man!!! If I only could afford a Full Frame, I would be loving my 70-200 F4. But the thing is, I love the Bokeh, I love the subject isolation.... and for more Blur I want to get closer to my subject, but the focal lenght doesn't allow me to....

So do you guys always handhold with this lens or use a monopod/tripod all the time? I know the f/4 is neither slow nor fast, but I was having trouble getting sharp shots because I just can't keep it steady with my own hands, especially at 200mm.

I handhold with this lens 99.9% of the time. I even hand held shots when when I visited the bird house at the zoo (i.e. lowlight) but I had to jack up the ISO though. The one time I recall using a monopod was this past July at the Wildbird Center when they had the Birds of Prey day.

Just picked up a used copy of this lens to try out. I have super-shaky hands, so I was a bit concerned about my keep rate. I ran out and fired off a few test shots to make sure the lens is ok. By the way, my copy of this lens seems fairly well used and the zoom ring feels fairly loose--is this normal or a sign of heavy use and do I need to be concerned?
Anyways, on to some shots. All, except for Alcatraz, are straight out of camera, no processing other than conversion to JPG in Aperture.

As you can see, the colors and sharpness are simply stunning. I have noticed that results lack slightly at 200mm but still a spot on piece of glass.

Are these shot in the raw or are you using the in-camera picture styles? Nice shots
I had considered selling this one and getting the 2.8 IS version or the f4 IS version but everytime I go out I am amazed at the pictures. I finally gave up the thought of selling it because I figured I would not use the 2.8 often plus I did not want to spend $2k on it (can use those funds to finance the 500L) and I can hand hold this lens without issues so IS was not totally necessary. Actually, as strange as it may sound, I actually almost always prefer to shoot without IS now...strange ughh.
I got this lens in a package deal with the 300 f4 IS lens; I only paid $500 for both lens so it was a no brainer for me. Before buying it, I was about to pull the trigger on the 70-200 2.8 back in 10/08 when I got my 50D.
Got this lens about 9 days ago and I've already put it to work, here's a spread of its accomplishments. Around the house (straight off the camera):..

I concur!
Was doing a shoot last night (outside) and after using my 24-60 for a while I switched to the 70-200 and was once again blown away with it's performance. Camera set to manual 1/250 shutter with 2 speedlites, handheld=fantastic!

Absolutely stunning pictures guys, I have only shot with mine a couple times so my shots aren't that great but I am hoping with a bit more practice they will be as good as yours! I was shooting a birthday party inside of Chuck E. Cheeses and the lighting was very inconsistent, I was shooting anywhere from ISO 800-1600, f/4,and super low shutter speeds...1/60 and under...=[

Don't know how you posted this but you can just use your Zenfolio site to load your images without adjusting anything. At the Zen site click on share, then click on the size (must comply with site rules) you want to post and copy it to the box above with the mountain (make sure to delete the info in the box when you first open it up though). If you already know this then pretend this never happened.

I got to play with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS and a 70-200 f/4 IS yesterday. The 2.8 is just so huge, I forgot how huge they are (I owned a Sigma 2.8 before which are close in weight). But the f/4L IS is truely amazing how slow of a shutter speed you can get handheld! THAT is the only lens I'd be tempted to swap for my good ol' f/4L non-IS!

I've had this lens for years, but yesterday was the first time I used it with my (recently acquired) 5d. There really is something magical about this lens on a FF body.
And to think I almost sold it to upgrade to the 2.8 IS. No thanks! I'll save the money and get a 200 2.8L for those rare situations when I need 2.8 (those situations are almost always the ones where I'm at 200mm, so it works out well).
