My first outing with my 50D and 70-200 F4 so I wasn't really used to the new setup. Coming from the original Digital Rebel.

Here are a few photos taken of some model aircraft at Gilbert Quiet Flyers. I am really interested in model aviation and enjoy photographing the different events around my state.

The 70-200 is a little short for photographing models but with a little cropping they came out rather nice.

After viewing this thread and going through the posts and awesome pictures, I have decided to buy this lens, although it was not in my budget, i had to push very hard on my budget. I bought it used, its just being shipped from the U.S, as I am in Thailand, it should be here in next 5 days time. My query to the owners of this lens are:

As the lens is used, how do I check if everything is fine. I will use it On a EOS 40D. Please suggest me all the possible ways to test out this lens once I receive it, so that I know I have got exactly what I should get.

Thank You in advance.

Yes. He got into NRA High Power Rifle competitions a couple years ago. So he shows up to quite a few matches. He used to shoot at the matches our club holds at MCB Camp Pendleton frequently, but I think he's been busy the past year or so and hasn't showed up to a club match in a while.

paintball is actually thriving right now. Many regional and national tournaments and there is even college NCPA leagues (guy in last picture above plays for RPI, which plays in the AA division. He's also a photographer). It's fun to shoot, but you always carry the risk of getting hit in the body or lens.

Thanks for the advice Roy. I thought I'd managed to get the horizon pretty straight when I shot it - I guess not.

As for exposure, that was a consequence of the Auto Tone button in Lightroom. Guess I need to make an adjustment (or not rely on the software so much). I'm relatively new to Lightroom so still learning.

Michael - I've taken the liberty of straightening the horizon and darkening it a little. I wonder if you think it's any better?
It's an improvement. I might have a look later and see what Lightroom did to my exposure. I wonder if there's a way to Autotone with affecting the exposure slider?

Roy Mathers
8th of November 2009 (Sun), 18:16
I don't use Autotone personally but, if it does affect the exposure, just correct it with the slider.

Swann1
8th of November 2009 (Sun), 18:41
Come to think of it, I've found that Auto Tone doesn't do so well with photos taken in low light conditions. Might have to reset the tone settings on the later photos and see what it looks like.

Roy Mathers

I would think that you're better off doing it manually by using the sliders.

I would like to buy this lens, but I was wondering if any of you guys uses it with a Canon EOS 450.

I've seen a lot of photos taken with EOS 40D, and dont know who to "blame" :) for the good photos - the camera or the lens??

Thanks

Well I said this because I've tried shooting birds in flight and have not been able to get sharp focused results. Camera was set to ai servo.

I tried the same thing with the same exact lens on a 40d and results were stunning.

Perhaps I'm not doing it right? How bout some tips from more experienced shooters?

Oh, I see, well if its a small bird i know it happens cause i just sold my 70-300 is usm..which i hated cause it had slow focus..was hoping this one would help with that..im guessing you had it on auto select for all the AF points, correct?..i sometimes set mine for the center dot.

Here's a couple of my daughter which unfortunately comes with a story. So I'm at the zoo with my daughter. We're at the Panda exhibit when another photographer barrels in front of us totally oblivious of my daughter (bumping into her and almost knocking her over). Well he continues to shoot, so I wait for him after he comes out and say to him..."Hey man did you get some good shots?" he responds with "Yeah I did" then I say "Good because you ran over my daughter getting them." He apologizes and I say "I know sometimes it's all about getting the shot but you gotta be a little more considerate" He then responds by calling me an "Ass" and tells me "If you want I can come out here and run you over too!!" I gave him the "Whatever man KEEP WALKING". And that was that. Was I in the wrong to confront him?

Can someone tell me what the auto-focus speed is like on this lens? I'm considering going 70-200 f/4L + 135 f/2L over the 70-200 f/2.8L (non IS), even though it'd be a more expensive route, just for the fact i'd have two lenses - one to cover events and the other for portraits. But i'd still like moderate AF-speed, if it's possible on this lens?

I doubt there is any lens in this focal range, at any price, that focuses faster, and that observation is based as much on experience with a 10D as with a 5D.

And except for cases where you needed extreme selective focus, it's a darn good portrait lens with excellent bokeh.

The focus seems pretty fast to me, and if you put the focus distance switch to good use it is even faster. If you know that what ever you are shooting will not come within 3m, set the lens to 3m to infinity and it won't have to run through the whole range. That being said, I set mine to 1.5m with no complaints as to focus speed.
