Hope no one minds me posting this here...I've put it up in a couple other topics too. My first outing with my new 70-200 F4L.

Shot using shutter priority, 1/500, f13.

I noticed that Jimmy_Racoon's link a few pages back actually is the 70 - 200 f4 L IS version, not the regular f4 L USM version. Awesome pictures by the way.

This is my first shot with the new 70-200L. Granted, it isn't a true representation because some contrast, detail, and sharpening adjustments were made in Lightroom (as well as crop), but I must say that I VERY impressed with this lens given that this was a shot done handheld and it came out better than a shot from a tripod on my old 70-300. This was shot ISO 100, f/4, 1/500 sec. (edit: the .jpg looks pretty harsh...don't know if that happened in the conversion from Raw in lightroom of when it uploaded to photobucket, but the original looks much smoother...this version looks like contrast and sharpening were pushed as far as they would go)

And here's a second shot...again, adjustments and cropping done in lightroom. This time, picture was taken with a tripod, cable release, and live view on. Again, happy with the results. ISO 100, 140mm, f/5.6, 1/320 sec. (yes, I know, I know...I shot at 140mm....DOH! I didn't realize that until I came back inside and now I'm too lazy to go out again...haha!)

okay, I lied...haha! One more (I promise!!) I couldn't resist trying 200mm on a tripod, so I went back out. This one again had adjustments and cropping done in lightroom. ISO 100, 200mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec.

Here is My moon shot, I just took it few minutes ago, Tripod Mounted, Mirror Lock Used, at f9, 200mm, spot metering, iso 100. Applied minimum sharpening and contrast, exposure reduced. Canon EOS 40D, 10.1 Mega Pixels, 100% Corp. A very cheap UV filter is attached to the lens, I will buy a conon one very soon.

The Canon filters are not highly regarded. My personal advice would be to go naked, but if you must use a filter, choose something like the Hoya Pro series.

From back before I acquired at 100-400L, I used a 70-200 f/4 L. It was wonderful from wide open. After the Sigmonster arrives, I'll look around for another 70-200 non-IS. Looking back, I liked that small/light lens a LOT.

How do you do that Thievery..make it look like a model

It's a really easy process done in Photoshop:

Open in Photoshop and enter Quick Mask Mode.

Choose the Gradient Tool. Be sure to choose the Reflected Gradient option.

Draw a vertical line; the start point will be the centre of the in-focus area, and the end will be where the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus is completed.

Exit Quick Mask Mode and return to Standard Mode.

Choose Filter > Blur > Lens Blur (adjust the settings to your preference).

I got this Lens for Christmas and I am so glad I did. I absolutely love this Lens. The closeup of this cat is at the full focal length. Just to give someone the idea that you can still shoot at 200mm without IS. I shot both with my Rebel handheld

maybe this lens could be my first L lens, and I wanna use it for street photography,,,and my question is, are you guys always use a tripod or monopod to take a shot, because I don't think it will be flexible to take a shot with tripod or monopod, especially in street photography ,,,,,thanks guys, I just need to convince my self before I really get this lens in my hand.....( sorry for my english )...

Wow. I think it might be tough to use this lens for street photography, but good luck! It's a little long, especially with a 500D, and it's bigger than a standard 50mm (30mm on your camera), so it might stand out a bit. Plus it's white. But I guess you're planning on keeping your distance from the subjects, so it will probably work well!

I would just increase the shutter speed and ISO to make it work. Carrying around even a monopod would probably be annoying for street photography.

Are you shooting street photography at night? If so, f4 will limit you. If you are talking about everyday conditions, I really enjoyed my 70-200 f/4.

Looks like a great lens. What should I buy, this or the 70-300 IS USM? This one does give better image quality, but lacks the IS. And I don't really want to spend $1000+ dollars on one with IS.

I think you just answered your question...I had the same dilema on possibly buying the IS version. I was worried about not having the IS but for what I needed it for I wasn't concerned with not having it. For half the price you cant beat it.

Hey guys. First off, I think I've been through almost every page of this now. BEAUTIFUL shots!!

I'm about to pull the trigger on the f/4 (non-IS). Just wondering who else is using it on a 7D. I'll be shooting handheld about 90% of the time. I know the IS version might be a good investment, but I really just don't think I can afford it right now. So, I guess my specific question is about how people are liking this lens handheld on a 7D? Do you find that you're able to compensate with ISO to get the shutter speed fast enough in poorer lighting situations? Are you happy with the results?

Thanks for the help!

Also, for 7D/crop body users, how do you like the 70-200mm range. This is my first telephoto so I'm curious.

cppalermo
14th of January 2010 (Thu), 09:37
I cannot speak for using a 7D but on my 20D which is gripped the 70-200 is very nice handheld. At the maximum focal length its tricky but with steady practice I get the results I am looking for most of the time. As far as using in low light its difficult but you can get good shots with the ISO bumped up. From my personal experience I will have to manual focus in lower lighting otherwise the AF will hunt because it is an F4. But dont be afraid you can still get great shots with this indoors....dont let people fool you ;)
