Sorry about the delay, I completely forgot about posting my 'pull back'.
I swear I didn't make that term up though... You pull back a few feet to show how you set the shot up...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4686892224_455c389baa_b.jpg
Used my lightstand to hold plastic bag w/ water with tiny hole, OCF to the left shot straight at floral wallpaper.
Aim camera low and shoot at an angle to get nice reflection.
Not really much else to it, but it gave me what I believe are great results
Here's the rest of them if anyone is interested.

IS really won't come into play until you start shooting below about 1/400, and most can get away with close to 1/200 without IS at 200mm.

I disagree, the moon is perfectly exposed and the dark hazy foreground adds mood. More exposure would have bleached the moon and the foreground would be very low on contrast.

Oh, thanks! I wasn't sure if the extreme warmth of the moon was too much or not. I may have had the white balance set on "Cloudy" or something, but I kinda liked it that way.

It can be a bit short for wildlife, but as long as you keep your shutter speed short enough it's a great lens handheld. Don't be afraid to raise ISO to get the right shutter speed. It also works very well with a 1.4x extender for a little extra reach.
EDIT look at post #2218 for a couple of examples I posted of wildlife with the 1.4x extender on this lens.

Good news:
My 70-200mm f/4 L came today!!
Bad News:
Thunder/downpour started while I was opening up the box.... :(
Since this is my first "L", (and I've never even seen one either!), It was neat to see a Canon lens that actually came with its own hood, and the cool leather bag lens case, although, I don't how much use it will be, since the lens will be stored in my camera bag.
I still have to get a good UV filter, any recommendations?
Hopefully, it will be sunny tomorrow.....

Really depends on the wildlife. Ducks in the water or on the ground it should be fine. I did a lot of ducks, birds, squirrel and other grounded animals in areas where they are used to people being around. But I realized I needed more reach when I went for birds in flight and other things that were not agreeable to me getting close to them. I bit the bullet and bought the 100-400mm IS L to go alongside my 70-200 f/4 L.
In reality I can see myself selling/trading off the 70-200, but for now it's being kept!

Haha. Congrats on the new lens, Scott. I know the feeling. I'm sure you'll love it once you get a chance to shoot with it. This was also my first L, bought it when I still had my T1i. I'm now using 5D. Here are some samples before I say goodbye to the lens - selling it to make room for other lenses.
Definitely a great lens, super sharp but just not getting enough use for me to keep. Have fun!
The first 2 was shot with T1i, the rest with 5D mk1.

The bad thing about a lens this sharp is sometimes it can resolve details that you didn't really want to see so, I won't show you a crop from the first pic (you can see where the fish's blood stained all the water around it in the air red).

Yeah, all my pics used to go through a pass of Unsharp Mask in editing, but with this lens it makes it look really over-sharpened (which is weird because I use the camera's "faithful" setting which mean sharpness is set to 0). It's only weakness is at/near MFD, which isn't really fair to judge it by that considering it wasn't made to excel at that distance, while my macro was made for exactly that purpose.
photographergirl
18th of July 2010 (Sun), 11:24
Well isn't that part of why we want this lens is because of its sharpness. I know that is part of why I picked it up. If you want to dull down your image there are a ton of ways to do so in photoshop.
Also it sounds like you don't need to run it through unmask sharp any longer while using this photo if the lens is already producing a sharp quality image that you want.

Maybe you should walk away from any camera settings and shoot in RAW. That gives you so much more control over things...

Received my lens yesterday and only had time to test around the house. Which I won't post here just yet. Its killing me knowing its sitting in my camera bag just begging to be used and I can't use it till I come back from Dallas. From what I did get to use of it, I am in LOVE! It focuses super fast and so clear too. I am used to when you zoom in and out that the lens extends. Did not know that does not happen with the 70-200mm. I love it.
