Nice shots TMR!
Thank you Brad,
I've been like a little kid all day using the lens and telling everyone about the new toy. The pictures tell it all though....and the ease of use, it handles and balances so nicely, fast and silent AF, tack sharp, brilliant color. I found that to be one of the most noticable differnces with lenses.
My 85mm f/1.8 I find to be very similar in that the color and sharpness are there and there's no reason to pixel peep looking for crap. The Sigma 17-70mm is a great lens but the color seems different, and the same is true with the 50mm f/1.8. Even when sharp, it's not as sharp or as saturated with rich color as this lens. As you can tell I am completely in love with it.
It's my first L and probably not the last now that I've gotten a taste of it. Prior to the L I got a taste of USM with the 85mm f/1.8 and that blew me away. Any shots I got today that were not tack sharp was my fault and had nothing to do with the camera or the lens. Those were shots with moving subjects, but anything that was static, there was never any question about whether it could focus or how fast.
I'm just going to keep saying "WOW!"

Thanks Kerry,
I was blown away when i was out shooting that day. What a fantastic lens this is. I don't know how the f/2.8 or the IS is but I didn't need either for the type of shooting I do. The reviews are so consistently excellent and every owner of one loves it. The only reason people seem to get rid of them is to upgrade to a faster lens or for IS, but never due to poor performance. Gotta love that!

Hi Twisted Image. I've never owned and L and never had a lens longer than 70mm before I got this lens. I have to say, I wasn't sure what to expect while handholding a 200mm lens but it was a dream. I shoot mostly in daylight and I didn't miss f/2.8 a bit, nor did I have to drop down my shutter speeds. I was shooting in all kinds of light using ISO 200, 1/400 or faster, and anywhere from f/4 down to about f/11. Every shot was tack sharp.
Just get out and shoot a lot and you'll see the 'operator' improving. Enjoy!

All of these have very little or no sharpening applied to them. The helicopter shot is slightly cropped and sharpened. The church photo is a composition of a moon photo onto a blank sky (I know it looks slightly unrealistic, but meh - 5 minute job :P )
All taken indoors with onboard flash.

Night/Indoor Sports is the biggest use for my 70-200, so the 2.8 is becoming more and more neccesary. I know I'm definitely going to miss the shaprness of my 4L, but the 2.8 will give me so much more headroom for night sports.
I will probably upgrade to the Canon 2.8 eventually, but being a 16 year old with a very small income that isn't quite plausable right now.

I have to say, that after extensive reading and seeing comparable pic's by both the F4L and 2.8L - the F4L has to be the winner . I would only use this lens in good lighting / outdoor applications, most on a tri-pod so the $$ difference , along with most users in agreement that the sharpest images are actually coming from the F4L is the deciding factor.
think I'll opt for the IS just because of the $$ savings not going to the 2.8L

Looks like we got this wrapped up with a $550 lens ( F4 L ) and $120 for a tripod ring holder thingy

Now... why would the f4 L be less sharp than it's "IS" brother the f4 L IS ? is it just because of the stops, or are both lenses equally as sharp and apparently (according to the majority online ) sharper than the 2.8 L or 2.8 L IS

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/images/smilies/confused1.gif
Just recently I swapped my (both practically brand-new) 28-135 IS and my 100-300 for a 70-200 f/4, after fantasizing/obsessing for a long time. I mainly shoot surfing, and my 400mm has rendered the 100-300 obsolete. I figured that upgrading to L glass was a smart thing to do -- even if it meant losing the image stabilization of the 28-135.
Did I make a mistake? Should I have just waited and saved for the 70-200 f/2.8?
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/images/smilies/iono.gif
Will I be happy with the image quality of the 70-200 f/4 (i.e. is it a true step above the 28-135)?
Here's one of the few pics I've taken with it so far:

Exactly!
I think I'm being neurotic. Everyone is always posting how the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is THE lens to have...
Am I suffering from an inferiority complex?

even from a novice's visual viewpoint after surfing hundreds of pics from both lenses, the f4 L is giving NOTHING up if not being capable of providing the sharpest image.
again, just a noobie's 2 cents, but I'm a big fan of the over-achiever in anything and this lens comparison keeps showing the champion isn't always the Biggest ticket $$ item

Is there a smaller hood that fits the 70-200f/4?
I do use the supplied one but its a bit tight in my camera bag when mounted on the lens. I was just wondering is there si a shorter one thats worth using.

This lens was my first L, and I sold it away shortly after buying it because the range didin't seem right for me on an XT. That said, I'm still somewhat guilty for selling it off because I was a complete newbie at that time, and didn't take the opportunity to use the lens to its fullest. It's amazing bang-for-the-buck. Very cheap, as far as L lenses go, and it really doesn't give up anything because of the cost either. Now that there's an IS version on the market, there's actually a chance I would buy it again.
So here's my personal tribute to the lens that was so excellent, but I had used too infrequently:

I'm pretty much sold on this lens, especially when I have no fear of using a tri-pod like it's an extra appendage
I just don't see enough of a difference in any 2.8 L shots posted anywhere online to warrant the difference in $$ or weight

i love the 70-200 f/4, compared to my previous Sigma 70-200 f2.8 it is so much lighter and easier to shoot handheld for longer period.
The optics are amazing and it gives decent bokeh.

Hi tjespo22,
Well, I don't do a lot of real low light shooting but I shoot with this lens a lot and the light is not always what I would like.
I must have missed all the people saying it was horrible in low light, but I always put things in perspective and know that many of the people that are not crazy about this lens are owners of the f/2.8 or f/2.8 IS and I'm sure the difference is significant in terms of low light shooting.

Mine works quite well in low light. These were shot in very low light handheld at 135mm(1st pic)/109mm(2nd pic) 1/40 f/4.5, straight conversion from RAW with the exception of boosting exposure .2 in the first one and .5 in the 2nd...no sharpening in either. (2nd pic in next post)

Don't think about it, just do it! :) It's a great hand-holding lens. I never use a tripod unless I'm doing set portrait stuff. I will use a monopod with sports sometimes, but 80+% of the time it's handheld. The ones I just posted were handheld.

My lens rarely comes off of f/4. It's unbelievably sharp wide open. The only reason I ever come off of f/4 is for DOF preference or if there's just too much light.

Not sure if this has been discussed here but given your question it sounds like you want to handhold this lens (and you should). You may want to consider getting the IS version of the f/4. The latest Canon IS technology used in the f/4 L IS is reported to give you 4 stops over the non-IS (thus you can handhold at lower shutter speeds with less camera shake. IS has no effect on stopping subject blur from moving though...i.e. 'fur monsters').
In my head lower shutter speeds = more light available to my sensor. So in low light conditions, for handholding, you have some more latitude to get the shot.
If you shoot in half way decent light, or with mono/tripod, or flash then IS probably isn't worth the extra money :lol:!
Prices around $900 new thru B & H after instant rebates are really good, but still a bit more than non IS f/4...
Again, sorry to OP for hijacking a bit...trying to help momtothefurmonsters with some samples. Mods please delete/move if spirit moves you:).
All shot at 200mm end of my 70-200 f/4 L IS. No crop or sharpening/PP. Handheld (no supporting/bracing), M mode, AF center point. Just quick shots of a poster on wall. All at ISO 100 so exposure is a bit off. Didn't shoot multiples and pick best/worst. Just quick test of IS capabilities at slower shutter speeds.
First image 1/30 with IS
Second image 1/30 with IS turned off.
