+1 really remarkable!
But it is not what I think of as macro. Captured in flight? It's amazing but mysterious. It is so well lit, but with a black background. Madweasel, can you tell us more about how you got this one?

I've only had this lens for a few months but I absolutely love it and have been utterly amazed how sharp the images are. I was on the golf course while taking this shot, so I wasn't out just looking for ducks to shoot :P

Thanks. It was a natural-light shot of a hovering dragonfly, shot into the light, against a shaded background (intentionally). The background is not completely black, but is simply very underexposed when exposing for the sunlit subject.

Good light, sharpness and framing Shane, but only in the third shot have you captured any sense of movement. The shutter speed in the Porsche shots is too high, making them look like they're parked.

Performs well in low light conditions, hand held, sure 2.8 IS would be better, but I can’t justify huge price difference as long as I’m not paid for taking of pictures.
Sometimes it helps to learn how lens and camera works, before spending thousands as well.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I over-process stuff a bit to compensate for that little washout that occurs when they're posted. BTW, I found that if you post to FlickR and then click on the image and go to the size choices and choose biggest, you can post slightly larger/higher res photos than from Photobucket.

Thanks! Yea, as a first "client," she was definitely a stunner. It was a friend's friend, but nonetheless I took it as if it was my first paid gig.
I had some blurry pics while trying to shoot less than 1/250 for the flash. I guess its time for me to upgrade to the IS version, or work on my technique.

I was quite worried when I got this lens that I would have a lot of blown shots, but have been relieved to find that even a bit under 200 I'm doing pretty well. I'm pretty sure I don't have unusually steady hands...I don't know why my ratio is so good. I wondered if the lens has some magic quality:)
If your goal is to go pro, maybe the 2.8 would be a better choice, or the 85mm 1.8? Wouldn't the larger aperture be more beneficial for blurred background portraiture?

I'm a Noob! In March I didn't know what a DSLR was, honest. However, I take a lot of pictures. I took almost 400 yesterday, and only had a few that were any good. I've taken about 6,000 since I got this Canon at the end of June. I also have lightroom 3 and work pretty hard at figuring out how to use it and spend considerable time cropping and tweaking... If you go wander around with your camera, you just start lucking into stuff. I went to a little pond at the local university. Kids feed the sparrows there, so they just fly up close. That's how I got that shot. Its early autumn and I saw a bunch of dragonflies buzzing around and and went over to a quiet spot and those two just landed in front of me and started bonin' (well, I stood around for about 30-40 minutes getting shots). Everytime I go out, my first 50 or 60 shots are just garbage, but I don't worry about it and just snap away...:D:D

I just got mine two weeks ago and couldn't agree more. When I do my PP I still apply a little sharpening, but it is mostly out of habit. It really doesn't seem to do much--its like its already at "max"! The thing that amazes me the most is how few shots I lose due to blur. I really worried I would regret not paying double for IS, but couldn't bear to spend $600 for $100 worth of technology. I am a noob and have never used a longer non-IS lens, but I find my success rate almost perfect, even when I am going well below the recommended "safety limits". Now I'm relieved that I didn't get the IS.

Yes indeed. With physically smaller lenses, I used to match the shutter speed with the focal length. Say 1/200th for 200mm. But with this lens, because it´s so massive (at least compared to my nifty fifty...) I can easily get sharp pics with 1/60th or maybe 1/30th at 200mm. It gets comfortably heavy with the 1D Mark II.
Now weather sealing would be nice though...

I agree with your numbers, but am not sure I follow your reasoning. Shouldn't a small, lighter lens be easier to hold steady than a heavier one?

I find that the heavier (up to a limit of course) the camera and lens, the less vibrations I get. :)
Mookalafalas
27th of September 2010 (Mon), 04:55
OK. I'll buy that. I was going to use the same numbers (well, the 1/60th at 200mm anyway) that you used, but thought it would sound hard to defend. I'm really happy to hear the same results from someone else. If I had bought the IS version, I would have been expecting these same kinds of numbers! It's nice to buy a lens that so easily lives up to its hype!

Well unfortunately I have just part exchanged my version of this lens for a new IS version.
For me, in England I was struggling with the shutter speeds and this made things difficult for me when shooting weddings. I was really having to bump the ISO higher than I would have liked.
I'm not quite sure how you guys can say you can shoot at 1/60th at 200mm. Even with a steady hand this was never possible for me. More like 1/250th or something if you ask me for a reliable shot. Sometimes you'd get lucky but I couldn't run the risk.
When the shutter speed was right, this lens was brilliant. It wowed me every time I used it. The F4 IS though, is that bit sharper and from some tests at 1/15th @ 200mm in low light, I'm amazed again.
Mookalafalas
27th of September 2010 (Mon), 08:35
Well, IS won't hurt anything, I'm sure. If you are shooting professionally in low light, however, hadn't you better go the whole way and get the 2.8? F4 isn't truly a low light lens, IMO...

Agreed it isn't but the MK1 2.8IS just doesn't produce as sharp images. When I say low light, I mean dull light. I just don't want to be at ISO800, outside in the day to ensure I don't get any handshake. F2.8 would have been nice but the price hike for the MKII wasn't justifiable at the moment. Plus F2.8 is nice to aid with lighting but isn't always a good aperture to be shooting at at semi-close distance.

Well my lens duly arrived at about 10am in work. But I had to wait until lunchtime before I could get out to play. Typically, it poured with rain and I spent most of my photo-time sheltering and trying not to get my new toy wet.
Here are a few pictures taken onthe Liverpool waterfront. All taken with ISO 100 f4 and are unprocessed jpegs.
1) Liver Buildings

2) Raindrops on Ballustrade showing narrow DOF

3) Lamp

The lens feels good and the first quickly taken pictures are certainly sharper than my Sigma produced.
I'm in love with it already. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship :)

I think that's about it Brules. The blacks are black and the whites are white, so the exposure is ok - it's just the harshness of the light. In post-processing you could reduce contrast, which might recover some of the lost shadows. If you shot the original in RAW there will be more detail to draw out.
EDIT: I'd already forgotten you'd said jpeg.

Maybe choosing one of the metering modes weighted towards the center or possibly spot would have helped. you would give up some of the detail that is exposed correctly in this version but could have gotten what I assume is your subject (the QB action). then you just crop the stuff that blows out. cant fight the light and win most of the time. if you shot it in raw you could have gotten a stop or so back.

I am in love.....well worth every penny. You can slap it on anything and it makes gorgeous pictures. Even mine above, other than the blown out shadows is still crisp and detailed with amazing colors. Do it!

Ahhhh.....now that I think about it, I think it was dropping my exp comp -3, but I didnt put 2 and 2 together. I will keep an eye on it next time and maybe start shooting in RAW. Thanks everyone!

Brules, don't think about it, just set it to raw!! It gives you an incredible power over your images. They become elastic, and you can pull this way and that way and reshape them into the picture you meant to take in the first place. Sometimes its like magic how you can take a "blown" picture and turn it into a gem.

Could anyone plz tell me their experiences with this lens of their shutter speeds at the tele end for portraits in outdoor/shadow spot shots ( hand held ).
Would 1/125 or below be an issue ( unless you have really stable hands) or should one think about going for IS version if they are using the above mentioned shutter speeds more often.
I have been reading the posts by Mookalafalas and j28 in pages 207 and 208, so a little bit of explanation for a noob shall be very much appreciated
Many thanks

Brules, I think your football image is underexposed quite a bit (-3 exp comp). The green grass should be in the middle of the histogram if exposed correctly (it is in the fifth zone in the zone system). If you look at the histogram of your image the big bump in it is the grass and it is shifted towards the left by a stop maybe more. Keep the bump in the middle of the histogram or a little towards the right side and everything else should fall in its place. I'm just hoping I'm making any sense here.
I have made a printscreen to show you the histogram (Let me know if you don't like your photo presented this way and I take it down):

At 200mm, the keeper rate at 1/125 does get rather low, unless you're bracing youself against a park bench or rail. Depending on how picky I am with the shot (sometimes I even find it too silly to judge picture sharpness at 100% lol), 1/125 is one of the slowest SS I would go. 1/60 will work if you're shooting towards 70mm... but if you're already outside (but in the shadows), just bump up the ISO a little bit more. Better than having a blurry picture.
