indeed. This is just the jessops 2x converter as well.... not the canon one. No pin taping needed to retain AF.

Hi
Could you post up some pictures in a new thread as it looks like some others I have looked at.
Do you mean that you have to tap pins on which model.
Nice picks too.

Sorry? Why do you want pics in a new thread? If you click on the pics here it should take you to my flickr page with a few examples on it.

I know the canon one needs the pins taped but this jessops one I'm using doesn't. AF just works.

Just ment some pics of the converter, sorry for confusion.
and felt this wasnt the thread for them.
on the 70-200 f/4 what where your settings iso etc. flash or ambient.
Just looks interesting.
Thanks

Hi genome
I would like a quick favour, is there any signs of who makes it for them?

Mookalafalas

There is amazingly little hard evidence/reviews about TCs. I just fell into a bit of money and ordered the Kenko 2X Pro300 GDX (or something like that) after wasting a lot of time trying to research them. That is Kenkos most recent, and Kenko has a wide following and is generally pretty well spoken of. Hope I don't regret not trying to dig up Jessops...

Genome

yeah i read that the kenko ones are decent. Was going to get one until i tried out the Jessops one.

ukcyberboy - I only saw one thing on the web that hinted the Jessops one is a rebranded Kenko one. How true that is i dont know. It was an old article so i think it was refering to the old model. Not sure what the newer DGII is based on. Possibly kenko again. Its def not the same as their pro 300 version as thats bigger but i think the old on was based on the MC4 but the new one looks the same but is better but doesnt look like the MC7 or pro 300 so who knows

Thats just me guessing by looking at pictures on google though.

I am really interested in your findings both Al and Genome. I have had the Kenko 1.4x on the horizon for quite some time. I was thinking of the x1.4 due to leaving the lens in f5.6 and still allowing Auto Focus. The x2 would render it f8 which will, in theory, prevent AutoFocus, and since the Kenko's report 'correctly' to the camera, she could automatically shut the AF!

If it does not cripple the autofocus, I would be interested in the x2... although f8 may be too slow for certain shots.

Looking forward to your results Al!
Rafa.

I'm rather worried...the kenko description of what would happen with the AF seemed to contradict itself. I'm really hoping I don't lose AF, although I won't be doing action stuff and going to manual wouldn't be too big a deal. Seeing Genome's pics and comments, my thoughts were "Well surely the Jessops can't be that far ahead of the new Kenko, or there would be lots of talk about it..." Hope that turns out to be right! My fingers are crossed.

The problem on these things is that the 'better' the things are, the more in compliance they are with Canon standards. So, while others decide to play it on the borderline and allow focus at f8, which can succeed but can also miss, the ones with 'better' reputation play it safe: the Canon's will not allow AF to work, and some others require pin-taping to allow use of AF.

But, I agree that reports seemed conflicting, so I wonder what will result, and eagerly await your findings Al.

As always, thanks a lot,
Rafa.

Even if it doesn't you can always just tape the pins and it should work so I wouldn't worry to much.

Oh and live view focus will work regardless as it doesnt use the phase detect system.

thanks, yeah i loose auto focus with my tubes on the 70-200, with my tammy and 50mm it still works, my guess is it looses to much light with the f4, might still work on a 2.8 though?

I just love this lens. Just got back from a day of shooting up on the side of a norwegian mountain in the middle of winter with a 50mph wind. I used mostly the 17-40L but at the end switched to the 70-200 for a different perspective. The 17-40 is a good lens, no doubt, but I am always surprised when I see the results from the 70-200, at just how good they are. So sharp and the colors are fantastic. I haven't gotten around to processing all the mountain shots yet, but here is one I took from my back yard when I got home, with zero PP except for a crop.

Thank you for the kind words. That is our state Capitol building. Shot on a cloudy evening as I was rapidly losing light. I think the final exposure for that was 15 seconds at f/8 iso 800. I used a B&W 10 stop filter to get the shutter down.

Nice photos, and nice to see this lens can do portraits as well. I'm seriously considering this as my next lens, but do like to take lots of pics of my daughters. So I'm torn between something like the 70-200, or maybe something like the 85mm 1.8?

Right. There is a "teleplus" in there, too. I'm going to try to get out to some "big bird country" right now. Won't be able to compete with Genome--I couldn't do a BIF shot even without the TC. Hopefully I can get something nice though.

That is up to you and your budget, remember you can turn off IS, what will you be shooting most and where?
I would go used as that saves money and can be put towards something else, these dont lose much money, just the tax to start with. If you can afford IS get that at least if you have the shakes or you do in door you can turn it on.
Just my 2 pennies worth.

You should be able to do that with a Ti--it still has plenty of megapixels. The 7D has wonderful auto-focus, but the monkeys aren't leaping from tree to tree or anything. Your rebel could handle it fine.
About IS or non-IS, will you be shooting stuff that's moving or standing still? If it's moving, during longer-duration shots there will still be blur--but from the subject's movement, not your hands. If you want to do, say, scenic shots in lower light, then IS would be very helpful. This is the non-IS thread, however, and you can see that folks seem to be doing pretty well:)

Genome

Whether you need IS or not varies from user to user. For me I choose not because I often shoot at fast shutters to freeze action, I have fairly stable hands and I own a Monopod for those times I need a little extra. For others it's vital as they may shoot at slower shutters or have shakey hands. I also like the longer battery life I get from using lenses without IS.

About the 7d. I use a 500d and capture action with it. It's perfectly capable. The 7d just makes it easier with faster fps and a more advanced focus system. You Should be able to capture anything from sports to birds in flight with any dslr and a lens with a fast focus motor. If you specialise in action and have the money then you might enjoy the more advanced bodies but they certainly arnt vital.

Friends, thanks for sharing such great work in here. This thread has some incredible images!

We had a family gathering today and I thought I could share a couple of photos. I believe this lens is fantastic for different types of photography: it excels in portraits, in nature shots, and, as some have proven here, in landscape, and many other fields. I have yet to take a good landscape picture, but here are two people shots and one nature. Hope you enjoy them.

I believe I have the first landscape out of the 70-200 that I like! (not because of the lens, but because of my complete lack of understanding how to use it properly). It looks almost as a Chinese or Japanese painting, but I swear there's little work in the picture other than removing 3 high-tension wires near were the signature is, reduced saturation and some cropping, as I don't have that aspect on my sensor :).

Also, it comes as a surprise as I thought the day of taking pictures was wasted due to the poor weather.

Hope you guys like it,
Rafa.

I like it very much. It definitely has the type of mysterious eastern mountainscape you described. My personal take on it would be to isolate the elements in the lower right through a tighter crop and maybe some mist cloning, but that's just me. Very nice image.

RafaPolit
22nd of February 2011 (Tue), 22:04
Thanks professor! It is already half cropped... I don't think the right portion has enough detail for that, I'll look into it, but it was very far away, and it was hazy, even the darker parts (crushed the blacks in LR3), so there may be too much noise. I'll look into it.

Thanks again,
Rafa.

Thanks a lot Derek and Whippeticious, I appreciate the warm comments. I'd like to take more credit on the cropping decision, but it was more or less driven by the surroundings. One pixel beneath the lower line starts a roof line of ill-kept houses and above the cropped section starts an overblown sky, so... I settled for the middle ground :)

Thanks again, I'm thinking of printing this one out as it is almost abstract. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again,
Rafa.

dmnelson

Depending on what you shoot IS may or may not be helpful. It compensates for camera shake when taking handheld shots of relatively still subjects. But it won't help when panning and/or shooting a fast-moving subject... That simply requires a faster shutter speed.

i'd say the bulk of my shooting are home gatherings for family parties, kiddy portraits in the park, and scenic photos around the area, almost always in daylight and when it's dark out or dark indoors i use my 550ex external flash.

Not sure if using the flash indoors would help with blur from shaky hands when shoot at a low shutter speed. but then again chances are if using an external flash i could likely stay in the 1/125 - 1/160 range...

dmnelson
27th of February 2011 (Sun), 23:23
Well, the flash lets you get a faster shutter speed, so yes it should help. :)

Genome
28th of February 2011 (Mon), 05:30
You can shoot at 1/100 with a flash and get perfectly sharp images so its not a problem.

IS is really needed for people with very shaky hands and people who shoot low available light only shots of subjects with little movement. Personally I don't really have a need for it. You can always get a mono pod to help in those situations where you need some extra stability.

For the first time a post for me at this forum.

Neither. I was about 10-15 feet away, in my living room, shooting through glass.

Tried watch photography with mine. Not too bad for a lens I bought to shoot my kids sports.

(Maybe they would have been better at f/11 instead of f/4?)

Funny I was going to try that out tonight with mine if I get a chance. Just picked it up the other day so I haven't had time to play with it.

I have some, unsure which I have posted here, which elsewhere, here's two of mine:

(for this we took away the backdrop to reposition the rim light, but you get the idea):
http://rafaelpolit.com/POTN/papi-3light.jpg

This is with only one light and reflector, no rim:
http://rafaelpolit.com/POTN/mami-1light.jpg

I think it is really good (not the pictures, the lens! :) ), but you need to be considerable far for head shots at 70mm on a crop.

Rafa.

Yes they are, very good work. 70-200 f4L is a magnificent and a true L lens.
