I'd say 4th shot, though I think they are all beautiful.
Nice to see what people are capable of with this entry model 70-200.

Do you guys wished it had IS though? have their been situations where you thought, "Damm i wish i had IS for this shot"
This is what forcing me to be patient and save and buy the IS version of this lens

Thanks guys! No extender - just bare on a 1d3.
Of course I wish it had IS! But do I wish I was also missing the extra $600? Hardly - I rarely ever use this lens. I have four ultrawides, a 50mm 1.4, and then this, which I keep around for fun ;) I just don't use it enough to justify the IS. If you know how to use this lens to your advantage, you won't need it - but be honest with yourself - it's not going to work very well indoors at night! It is, for me, by and large an outdoor lens, or indoors with supplemental off-camera lighting.

No. I purchased it for outdoor action, not still photography. For that reason and given the results the non-IS version is fine by me.
Note: I only wonder if I should have purchased the EF 200mm F/2.8 L USM II, since I am using the 70-200 at 200mm only. Also the white colour attracts a bit too much attention to my liking.

in all honesty, no I don't. With the right hand hold technique or support and being aware of your settings I can count the times I would have needed IS on one hand. Even indoor at the zoo i tend to be able to find something to brace against and shoot at the right ISO to get the shutter and get a perfectly decent result. Takes a little more effort in some situations that all.
If you primerily shoot stills in low light without additional lighting then sure its a great thing to have.

What about weather sealent? Is the IQ the same on both none and IS version of this lens? Why the massive price difference between the two if it is only because of IS and weather sealed?

well as far as IQ is concerned you will hear different things but i think it just depends on your copy. The IS version is apparently slightly better but this thing is so good only charts will really show you anything else.
Its true though that this one isnt properly weather sealed. So the premium is for IS and weather sealing.... but who really needs weather sealing? not most people. Unless you shoot in the rain a lot or shoot in a lot of VERY dusty environments you arnt going to damage your lens due to lack of sealing.

Of course but not for the IS on it. I only wish I had the IS sometimes because the IS version is slightly sharper than the non IS. I'm really not sure if it's $630 sharper, that's a new set of Gitzo tripod legs instead.

IS could really be useful indoors taking candit shots of people in a party or something.

^^ if i had the money and nothing better to spend it on then yes. However f4 isnt great for low light so i always use my flash with it indoors... well not always but for the most part.
Indoors low light work your better off with something like an 85 1.8. So id rather have the non L f4 70-200 and an 85 1.8 with a flash than just a 70-200 F4 L IS.

depends one focal length and shutter speed. Once your shutter speed is fast enough IS becomes fairly pointless.

point is that in low light, u have to reduce shutter speed so my point is on the money that IS is great for low light none moving objects.
People say "use a tripod" yea you can but its a fiddle carrying one and assembling it on your camera.
IS negates the need to use a tripod when the light is not that great.

I have the money but choose not to get the IS version. I use it outdoors in bright light so I don't need IS as I can get the shutter speed up no problems. Even when the light starts to drop I have no problems bumping up the ISO to keep the shutter speed up. I've only had this lens for a couple months but haven't run into a time where I needed IS and the pics are sharp so no complaints from me. Indoors I use the 24-70 f2.8L and some lighting the 70-200 with lighting inside wouldn't be a problem if you had the room to shoot.

Hi Mike ... could you tell me a little more about how you achieved such good focus/framing with these shots - given the speed these things were moving at and of course the small amount of time you would have had to set up the camera and compose the shot ... did you need to shoot hundreds for just a few keepers ? - regards Roger

Hi Roger, did you mean Matt? If so, all shots were handheld and I found it necessary to manually focus the lens. Basically, I just held the shutter button halfway down, tracked the subjects through the viewfinder, and worked the focus ring until I got AF confirmation. Sometimes I didn't wait for the confirmation and fired away anyways. I took about 40-50 shots and managed 5 keepers, haha. They were fun subjects to shoot and they were rather undisturbed by my presence.

Hey Roger - it's actually pretty simple - once you get the plane in the frame down range, keeping it in the viewfinder isn't that difficult. The hard part is panning with it at a slow shutter speed (less than 1/200th) to get acceptable prop blur.

i had a weird attachment to this lens. i say weird because i loved it but yet never took a single outstanding shot with it (my fault) and also because i sold it not long after buying it and regretting it right away but never buying another. my favorite shot with this lens is actualy just one of those shots you take sitting at your desk when you first open the package with no composition, no story just a snap. mine happened to be me holding my foot out and snapping a photo of the toe of my boot that is nicely isolated with limited DOF. i still keep the photo even tho to anyone else it would just look stupid. lol

if thats a 100% crop there is nothing wrong with that at all. You have to remember that if that is a 100% then your subject is pretty small in the frame and so you cant expect a huge amount of detail to have been captured.
If that isnt actually a 100% crop and is the whole shot then its not that good.
Can you post the original image?

Pick a good contrasty target, proper exposure at f/4 and try to get a shutter speed at around 1/500 and ISO 200. Shoot in RAW....
Then post again. I am unaware of bad copies from this lens....

Thanks Raw shooter ... looking closer my concern continues ... I just shot this 1/640th f5.6 iso 200 F/l 200 I focussed on the cross piece of the window frame, put it through DPP and added a touch of sharpening and nothing else ... my concern is that I'm not going to be able to use this camera unless it's clamped down on an heavy tripod in bright sunshine, checking the manufacturer date (I did buy this 'used'( I make it a 2006 model, I don't know whether this is significant) ... http://www.rogerburton.co.uk/stills/windowtest.JPG
By the way, thank you so much for taking the time - this lens was a big spend for me and it needs to 'earn it's keep' ... best Roger

these sorts of subjects are not good for testing a lens. Take a nice head shot of someone and have a look at the results then.
I can hand hold mine at about 1/200 a 200mm (not every can, but if you use the right technique its possible). Take a few close up duck shots or something as well and see what the results are like. Also true stopping down a touch and see if it makes any difference at all. At for the ultimate test to see if its you or the lens, try it on a tripod with mirror lock up and at least 1/100 a second.... or even with a flash and 1/100 would help as that should freeze any motion.
If you do this and are still getting results you are not happy with then maybe send it to canon to be checked up on.

Genome is right. This photo is not really a good test object. I am asking the obvious...which focus point was used? Center? From this photo it looks as if the camera has picked the bushes to the right, which makes sense, because that's the area with higher contrast.
Don't let the camera decide for you where to focus, pick your own.
So, get out and shoot a duck, a street sign (at an angle to check for field of depth) or a dog, a cat...something along those lines...

Yep, I have the 250, same backpack basically, you just need to move back the center divider and it'll fit right in, I use it with both my 70-200 f/4 and my 24-70 2.8.

I used to have this lens a couple years ago but sold it to get me a sigma 70-200 2.8 well the sigma is acting up again and I need to have it sent out to get repaired so I have another one of these coming this week. I have always said that this was the best lens that ive ever had but I really need the 2.8 for hockey in the winter time so Im hoping to get the sigma back and sell both these to get a canon 2.8

Hi chaps, still getting to know this lens but had a little more success this morning, got these 'keepers' out of a few dozen shots ... I'd really like to hear your comments, the swan and the dog were with a 1.4 TC ... I think I'm still trying too hard to keep my ISO down and I'm suffering, therefore, from too much camera shake, I also can't decide what's the best metering mode for this sort of stuff and also which focus method (servo for the swimming dog - and should I change back when shooting something static) when there's not much time to mess around ... anyway let me know please ... I think my 70-200 has actually become one of my favorite landscape lenses. Often times my 10-20, which is considered the "ideal" landscape lens, is too wide when I'm at a scenic overlook causing the foreground areas to enter the frame; the 70-200 gets me in closer to the scene and works great for landscapes

What a lot of variety on this page! Birds, bugs, sports, architecture, portraits, hot models, landscape, urban Black and white. Funny how I've read people say this lens is too long to be of much use:)
Anyway, here is a portrait of a friend from yesterday. I am really happy with how it came out.

Does anyone really miss the IS on this lens? I'm looking to get rid of my 70-300 IS for one of these, just not sure the lack of IS will hurt me on panning/low light shots (cars)..
EDIT: Disregard, went back 5-10 pages and found some discussion covering this.

Used this lens today for a wedding. I was pleasantly surprised! Really sharp, and actually quite nice background blur for an F4 lens.
The 70-200 family has to be the 7D's favourite lens :p

- Hi all! Excellent pictures shown here. Well, I've been following this thread a while and now was the time to join. Being an "amateur" .... I got some questions; I would like such a lens but - still have my doubts .... I have an EOS 400D; would this "limit the capacity" of the lens? Are there any limitations in the body that makes this lens an "overkill"? There's a lens in the usedmarket here and I would like to get my hands on it if it would work well on the 400D. What do you think? Do I need an upgrade of body also?

The 400D is a very capable camera. The megapixel numbers are getting a bit silly, and don't mean much unless you are blowing up pictures into wall murals or something. They can help you "crop in" on a photo, say if you are shooting a finch that is quite far away, but the body won't be holding the lens "back"--you can expect to get lots of wonderful pictures. If you look through this (or any other thread) you won't have to look too far to find people with older rebel bodies getting terrific shots, often exceeding lots of the 5D mark II pics surrounding them.

Are there any limitations in the body that makes this lens an "overkill"? There's a lens in the usedmarket here and I would like to get my hands on it if it would work well on the 400D. What do you think? Do I need an upgrade of body also?
I have a 400d mate and im about to buy the f2.8 mk2 version of this very same lens which is double the cost and weight but for my needs and wants, i need f2.8 as i shoot often in f2.8 in my tamron 17-50mm
that said, here is one pic with the mk2 i took when i wast testing the lens:

No PP whatsoever and done on my canon 400d. You will see similar results on this f4 lens easily

Hi... just awesome! This is one of the best picture I've seen from any EOS xxxD. You made me "trust" my camera now and I'm convinced to go the L way.
