Hi... just awesome! This is one of the best picture I've seen from any EOS xxxD. You made me "trust" my camera now and I'm convinced to go the L way.
Yup. its all in the lens mate. Some 400d users put all these 7d/5d mk2 users to shame :)

All my shots in this forum are handheld because I have no tripod. My pics always keep exif with them, you can read many pics were shot at 200mm (handheld)

Weight is one matter, the steadyness is another. As long as your shutter speeds are short (in normal daylight they easily are short enough) the lens won't give "shaken" images. And the lens is light enough to shoot handheld.
This lens seriously is worth every dollar/euro/yen/what ever if the focal lenght is suitable ;)

Thanks, and yes it was hand-held. I was shooting at ISO400 and f/9 in hopes of getting a fast shutter speed while also avoiding any focus issues. Worked out pretty well, as it resulted in a shutter speed of 1/1600. However I don't feel the actual image quality is spectacular if you look at a 100% crop. :)

awesome picture!!! was this handheld?
I am assuming it is handheld as it looks like it's day time... so there's a lot of light, which allows the shutter to capture fast motion. I love the 2.8 aperture... but I found myself to hardly shoot at night with it or under cloudy weather, so I I haven't really benefit from the IS. Unless I shoot less than 1/200 sec would I need to use the IS to esnure the image to be stablized.

Thank you for your compliment, though I cannot take a position to say anything about my "snapshot". I have seen lots of spectacular images in this thread.
This lens is different from every other lens I have ever owned: whenever I want to take a pic, the lens just doesn't let me down. All other lenses have some "best" range, or focal length, or aperture, or only good front or background bokeh, but this lens just takes good pictures one after another. It is totally different matter if I have talent to use this lens so that the image ends up to be worth publishing.

In my piece of lens the sound of zooming is a bit like dragging feets on the floor when using socks. So, I guess you don't loose by trying another sample, but might gain a sample that is "as expected". ;)

If using firefox you can download add ons such as fxif which let you right click to get exif data, otherwise if there is a link to flickr, you can check there.
I'm loving this lens more than the IS version I had earlier :)

Iīm actually starting to concider this lens. I had decided to buy the one with IS, but Iīm not sure if thatīs needed. I have the 85 f1,8 and the 50 f1,8 for lowlight shooting, so this one would only be used outside shooting some sport, events, concerts and people.
Maybe I donīt need the IS?
I also have a monopod in case of lower light.
Is the IS version worth the extra money in my case you think? Is the IS version better optically?
Best regards/Daniel

Yes, the IS version has a slight optical improvement over the non-IS version.
No, the price difference isn't worth it for YOU.. Only if you think you have plenty to spend. :P
Do you work at short or long focal lengths? At the longer end, IS would provide some assistance, but a monopod can get you there too.

I donīt have too much too spend so I guess youīre right. I like to work at long focal lengths but i guess I will manage it with my monopod. Hmm, I will have to think about it a little more, but thanks for your answer.

This is a common topic in this thread. I must say, I have never minded the lack of IS at all. I have recommended to other people, turn the lights down a bit in a room and practice taking shots of your book case at lower shutter speeds and see if you can't improve your form/technique a bit. I did that for 30 minutes or so on a couple of occasions, and really improved my low light skills--by about 2 stops, perhaps. As the non IS is about $600USD less, I figured that was the best paid hour of work I ever spent!

I'm using the IS version and find the IS crucial at low light when hand held. I can get sharp images with burst mode, I mean really sharp. Just for interest sake, I've turned the IS off on a couple of occasions... sharp images was not possible! So, again, depends on what you're going to use it for, but for my money, I'll always go for the IS.

Sounds like a good idea. I will have to try this lens for sure. Thanks for the tips.
Best regards/Daniel
The IS version is a completly different lens and much sharper.
Iīll take that in concideration. The uestion is if the extra sharpness and the IS is worth the extra 8-900 dollars it costs here in Sweden, when on a budget.

Thanks for the answer. It will not be used much in low light.
Best regards/Daniel

I often wish I had the IS. When you are at 200mm, you need to have it at 1/200 or higher....when light starts fading it becomes worse. Love my lens, but the IS sure would come in handy at times.

Great photos!!! I have purchased the non-IS version as the IS is not worth the extra money. IS plays a role for steady objects (and of course when not used on a tripod - under low light situations, not so for moving objects and I think, that if I ever have to choose between the version with IS and the 2.8 version without IS, my pick will probably be the 2.8 without IS...

No totally true. The IS version has a lot of the newer optics from the 2.8 IS - so it is even sharper than the original F4L. Go check out the IS thread, the IQ is pretty amazing.
Non-IS is though by FAR the best bang for the buck out there. It is phenominal and will only disappoint if you try to do things it isn't great at.
And KILLER shot there psyber! Wow!

the IS version is also weather sealed where as this version isn't.
However I personally don't think the barely noticeable IQ improvement, IS and sealing is worth twice the price as all three are of little use to me. For someone who needs those things it prob is worth it.

It is claimed that the IS f4 version is sharper than the original IS f2.8 version. It was the sharpest 70-200 zoom until the f2.8 IS mkii came out. If you don't shoot in low light get the non IS if you're on a budget. I love mine and use it with a monopod with great results. Even though I love it I find myself at the 200 end 90% of the time so this will be replaced with the 200mm f2.8 mkii soon. That's another option if you find your using 200 more than anything else.

I will have the chance to compare them, because a friend of mine will share just for a day his lens with me. As for the quality of the lens without IS - I am just amaized how great this lens performs even without tripod or monopod. The sharpness, focusing speed and colors are first class. Weather sealed on a not weather sealed body like the one I own - EOS 600D (t3i) is just pointless to me right now.
