can yall post some portraits and headshots done with this lens as i possibly have a bunch of business coming my way and since all i have is my 30 and 50 i want a 3rd better lens for portraits and headshots. i am torn between this and the 85 1.8, obviously the 85 is smarter but this can be used for other stuff such as occasional sports shooting

I just bought this lens because I needed something more flexible (in fl) compared to my 85 1.8. I took this lens out today to get some test-shots and I am very pleasantly surprised. Very sharp, good bokeh and great AF!

In reviewing this forum I see a lot of great shots and exceptional clarity, hence why I want a 70-200L! Anyway thought I ask those who use this lens, when do you wish you had IS and is it really needed? Just wondering as it's twise the price for IS.

Essentiall, when on a crop like yours & mine - at 200mm it is = 320mm. At that zoom, you really need to be at 1/XXX shutter speed to not have any blur, so with the non IS lens you have to shoot at 1/320th. In good light, it is a non-issue. When light starts to fade, it becomes more of an issue. You can compensate for it with ISO or opening it up if you are not at F4 already.

The IS lens gives you 4 stops I think? So you can shoot it at less than 1/320 (200mm on crop) and not have to worry.

Another reason the F4L IS is 2x more is all the optics are new and improved - I think a majority of its elements and glass come from the 2.8 IS - so some say it is an even sharper lens than the non-IS.

If money is no object - get the IS - if you are on a budget, get the non-IS used off of the forums here and get your feet with with the L glass. If you find you must have IS - you can always sell it for what you paid for it (if you bought used) and upgrade to an IS version.

Great advice, had not thought about the crop issue. It may come down to budget but might just save longer and sell a few things if it makes sense to get the IS. As noted you never seem to get burned buying good glass.

Yeah, most of the L glass tend to hold their value very well. I bought mine used and have been extremely happy with it. I may be upgrading to the IS as my wife has shaky hands and has horrible results at 200mm lol. Would suck to "have" to upgrade for her hahaha. Either way, either lens is fantastic. If you see yourself shooting in dusk, low light etc, IS is probably useful. If you plan on mostly daylight shooting, then a monopod would probably be a less expensive alternative to IS.

I just can't get enough of it...It is a pure pleasure to shoot with this lens. A friend of mine, who is a Nikon owner recently told me, that perhaps the only thing he regrets, 2 years after making his choice is when he realized what lens opportunaties he misses that way...Canon lenses are just a class of it's own...

At first I had the same doubts as you. As long as you keep to the 1/xxx rule minding the crop factor, it should be pretty much fine. Practice your landholding technique and you could possible handheld at 200mm with shutter speed of 1/60 like me :p Keep in mind though, that it is not a lens for indoors. And just take many shots if your worried, and keep the best ones. Great lens, hope you can get one soon :)

Actually indoors is fine with a flash. I bought a cheap Nissin flash ($120 or so) and I'm good to go indoors as well. Just get a $4 diffuser and point the flash at your ceiling and you will be happy with your results, I think :)

It seems to be a great value lens for around $600 used I don't see how I could go worng. I'm not sure 200mm will work well for some of the sports I like to shoot but that's what cropping is for right! I was also considering the 100-400mm push pull L lens, I like how it's so short when at the 100mm which makes it easy to store in the bag, but it's not quite as fast at the upper range and I hear they get lots of dust inside.

Use center point focus only. Only use AI Servo when shooting moving objects like sports or cars. Use as low of an ISO as possible, and don't always set it down to F4. Some of my best results are f5.6-8.

AI Focus gives also superb results. This mode has everything One-shot has to offer + the ability to swith to AI Servo, if the AF tracks a movement. However a very slight movement will not force the swith to AI Servo. AI Servo also works fine actually for flying birds for example, however mostly on a bright and shiny day. If there is a lack of light, AI Servo will have a poor performance. This is just my experience until now with this lens and my Canon 600D.

No TC, some of them are cropped a bit, but they were being helpful and flying quite close!
I did go out and buy a TC after that though, so I'm now prepared for when they're being less cooperative :p

Just remember to keep the speed up on it! 1 / crop factor times focal length will ensure great shots.

So 200mm - 1/320 shutter speed (you can shoot slower, but this will guarantee no blur if you have shaky hands).

Enjoy it!

Always a lot of my recent stuff is automotive with strobes so ill be using it on a tripod most of the time but it will see other work as well

the black god is a Shi t'zu.... albeit im pretty sure he is a bit of a cross. That or a lassa apso. He was sold to us as a Shi t'zu but what ever. He is just so cute i could care less lol.
