Hi justisnmnz,
Nice detail. I'm always surprised at how amazingly sharp this lens is and how the images look, shot in RAW, right out of the camera.
I also find that when I shoot JPG with this lens the images are beautiful.
Optically the 70-200mm f/4 is superb. I'm not a low light shooter and I am very steady when hand holding with this lens so I really can't comment about all those that insist they must have f/2.8 or IS. I mean, if you need it you need it, but I think there are many that are quick to pass this lens up due to f/4 and the stigma of being 'one of Canon's least expensive L lenses'.
For the huge price difference I would really take the time to assess your needs over possible wants, in conjunction with how much cash is in your pocket. There are a lot of people that would be better off with the f/4 L (non-IS) and still have money for another lens or filters or a nice bag and accessories, or tripod, etc.

This lense is unbelievable.............This is why I got back into photog after about a 15 layoff. I still consider myself a noob, and am struggling through pp, but the images this lense produces is what I was looking for. ANd these are just some cheesy shots off my back deck. This lens is very nice and sharp if used properly.
I was upset at first because I got spoiled using IS on my 300mm. Sometimes it takes me a while to get the shot without blurring the photo (especially at 200mm). I'm getting better and I think this is one of those "build your skills" lenses that you can learn a lot from. Really great build quality, USM, auto-focus, and bokeh.
Here is a shot I took today.

WOW! WOW! WOW!
I just got my EF 70-200 f/4 L (non-IS) Thursday night and yesterday was the first opportunity that I got to spend a few minutes with it. I upgraded from the EF 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 USM and while I enjoyed that lens quite a bit I have to admit that there is no comparison. The L is in an entirely different league. My keeper ratio went through the roof with this lens. Focus seems to be dead on, the color are awesome, and I am seeing things that I didn't see before. I am still going to do a full blown comparison between the two lenses sometime this week but for now I have to show this shot.

Those look great for using a 2x TC Yosemite. That combo would be manual focus only right? In general how do you find the IQ of the 2x vs. the 1.4x? I know there's no substitute for reach when you need it and it's better to get the shot than not. Just wondering if using the 1.4 and cropping to the fov of 2x would be better?
YosemiteJunkie
10th of June 2007 (Sun), 15:20
Actually, Dorman, they were both caught with auto focus. These two are of the mom and she had two cubs with here and they were constantly on the move. When I saw them, I was so excited with this chance I grabbed for my longest reach combo and ran. Didn't even think of using the 1.4 TC but you are right. They very well may have come out better using the 1.4 TC. I was really surprised at how well they did come out though.

The Tamron TC just does (on mine anyway). The other night I was tinkering with both, the 2x & 1.4 TCs at the same time and about half the time it even caught on the auto focus. Surprised the daylights out of me. :)

Soem TCs do not report to the camera. Therfore the camera still thinks you are using a max aperture of f/4 and can retain AF. The Tamron doen't report (at least the older black versions) while the Canon and Sigma TCs both do.

I have a beef with mike right now for setting up the whole lens archive concept.....
I mean at first I loved it seeing what kind of results you can see with a lens but now it has taken residence in my wallet and has allied itself with my credit cards against me.
Thinking I might be looking at this lens as the future replacement to my 70-300 quantaray. Hopefully I can keep the forces in my wallet at bay long enough to recoup the costs of my previous gear investments.
my only reservations are the size of it but the image quality and sharpness compared to my own is amazing. (of course)

Hey all :)
I have started the process of saving up for this lens :) i cant wait!!
Just a question. Is this lens able to be held in hand to take photographs... Is a tripod essential. Or its ok for me to hold in hand and take photo's. Because i dont have a tripod and i like holding the camera and taking snapshots :)

Handholding the lens is not a problem. My wife and I do it all the time. Just make sure you have an adequate shutter speed. Of course each person is quite different but the general consensus is that you should use speeds of at least 1/effective focal length so at 200mm you should be using speeds at least 1/320 for a crop camera and 1/200 for a full frame camera. I have shots taken at speeds slower than this with great results though so it really depends on the user.

This is a great lens for hand holding, even with a 1.4x TC. And with f/5.6 as the maximum aperture I still get amazing results in daylight and well lit areas without having to raise the ISO or compromise shutter speed.
