Its very nice seeing how active this thread has become again!! Any idea why there is a renewed interest? Could it be prices? Better weather on the Norther Hemisphere? At any rate, its nice seeing so many people deliver so many great results from this, the cheapest L lens from Canon :)

Thanks, that was the idea in the first place. There is many Photoshop video tutorials on the internet, search for "dragan effect" .. this is a light version of it
Anyway, despite this effect, IQ of the lens is obvious. Also nice bokeh too
Previously I posted a better (I think) dog picture but yesterday's one is solid too :)

Just wonder, have you sold the first version of 70-200/2.8 L without IS? This was my first choise when I've been looking after this kind of lens.. But from what I heard, red, saw that lens is too soft @ 2.8 (also havier, bigger) .. ended up with F4 version
Even with FF camera, I already encountered few times with so bad lightning condition that F4 without IS was basically un-usable
http://www.stanislavmolnar.sk/Trips/Vystava%20psov/index.html#IMG_0842.jpg
I'm doing photography as a hobby but once I'll have some spare money I'll be definately going for 70-200/f2.8 L IS II USM

Tromumpet,
+1 on the praise about the shooter in the sunset... great picture! I have a thing for silhouettes (even the word provokes a feeling in me :) ) so this one plucks a string in me, lovely image! The droplet is as interesting and somewhat of a novelty here, as this lens is not the greatest macro champion (unless paired with some close up rings or extension tubes) so its interesting to see such an image here!
Thanks for sharing and congrats on the new lens,
Rafa.

Tromumpet,
+1 on the praise about the shooter in the sunset... great picture!
Thanks for sharing and congrats on the new lens,
Rafa.
Thanks RafaPolit! The water droplet picture was taken with the bare lens. I do have a wide angle macro lens that would perhaps have been a better option for this type of photo. However, I currently don't have an external flash, so this picture was taken using a very bright and extremely hot lamp as the light source. Consequently, I wanted the lens to be as far away as possible from the water surface. I'm relatively new to photography, but one thing I do know is that lenses tend to function better when they aren't melted. ;)

Hi Guys
I am from france, and i have found this english thread by searching samples for this lens ..
i have to say something :
I hate you lol
gosh your pictures are amazing and make me want to buy this lens more ...but little broken , need to save money but grrrr I could even sell my canon 60d to get it but the problem, it's my only camera , can't shoot lol
Message for Duymy
U make me depressed .. I have a 100mm macro L , and it's like the same result, even better with your lens ( and closeup) ... I am hesitating now to sell my macro lens to get the 70-200 lens, two lens in one .... pff lol
If i may say something about this thread tho ... ( i know i am new, i should shush)
some people use too much the clarity/sharp and it's difficult to see if it's the lens quality or not
( well sometimes it's easy to see coz it destroyes the quality lol )
thank u for sharing your arts, i hope i will join this thread someday

Welcome to the forum Toshfox! Perhaps you are right regarding the sharpness, but there is a different look from lens sharpness than post-processing sharpness, and if the photo is not sharp to begin with, there is little in post that can be made to save it... so, the fact that this lens allows such sharpening, is real proof of its quality.
For pixel peepers (I'm less and less a pixel peeper nowadays), a 100% crop of this lens is sharp, sharp!
It certainly has different uses than the 100mm Macro, but as an overall lens, its more versatile... the 100mmL has 2.8 which is a full stop better, and, of course, Macro :) ... but for everyday photography, the extended reach of the 70-200 probably makes up for the difference, IMHO.
Best regards,
Rafa.

Hola Rafa
u are right :)
Maybe i should wait and save money , these both lens can complete each other
I only have the L 100mm macro and 50mm 1.4.
I will need a wide angle but with a canon 60d, ( 1.6x) it's not easy to find one
I have just checked your website, i see u took birds pics with a t2i and the lens 70-200
that's so sharp !!!!! with a canon 550d : o

Thanks a lot toshfox... for the comments and for checking out my site! Most appreciated here, its always an honor to have fellow shooters check out the site!
As it turns out, the 7D, the 60D, the T2i (550d) and T3i (600d) all share the same (base) sensor (7D has an extra low pass filter and 60d also has something extra) but the base system is the same, so, minus the much better auto-focus, if you acquire focus one of the smaller Rebels, the final image quality should be the same as the bigger brothers.
As for wider lenses for ASP-C cameras (crop factor or 1.6x cameras), there are some interesting, though not very cheap, options. There are some Canon EF-S lenses that are interesting like the 17-55, or the 15-85. There are some third party lenses in the 17-50 range that are very well regarded, there is Canon's own 17-40f4L. You also have some interesting primes... a 28mm f1.8 is out there that is interesting. Staying with primes though your task is not easy on that field, I agree... zooms you can find of better build, quality and price :) . That 50mmf1.4 you have is a long time favorite amongst shooters... I only have tried the f1.8.
Happy shooting, and welcome again,
Rafa.

Rafa, nice to see a moon shot! Remember last year we had a big rash of them in the T2i thread? I know what you mean about how the moon seems to jump all over shooting at 10X. I had the same experience, and I have a really huge, heavy tripod

Al!!! Yeah, I just wrote on that social network site we frequent! LOL! :)
Friends, Al is talking about last year when we read (a friend made us aware of) that the moon was going to be full at the same time it passes through the nearest point to earth on its orbit... therefore, we would see a minor increase in size but a considerable increase in luminosity... so, we made it a 'task' for many of us to go out and shoot the moon! If I recall correctly, none of us had anything longer than 200mm or 250mm at the time, so we all were sharing 100% crops. It was really fun!
The problem is that here we had extremely cloudy skies and even though we made a trip with my father scouting for suitable locations and found a fantastic spot, the moon never showed her face! :) . We returned to check the night landscape pictures we have made, and I when I left my dad's house at around midnight, the moon was there, behind heavy clouds, but still photographable! :) So, I made a much more blurred picture of the moon.
Tonight I got a nicer shot, but I still think that the idea of having gone hunting for a particular subject last year has a bit more merit than just stumbling over a nice clear moon and sky :)
Thanks Al for your kind words, I failed to comment on your pictures above, I really like the simplicity of the faucets!
Thanks arch.cm and jamaio as well! Jamaio, your previous shot is remarkably perfectly focused, and it is because I read you tethered that I wrote what I did on my moon shot. Great idea and perfectly accomplished!
Best regards,
Rafa.

Thanks Rafa!! I am going to try again next time we have a full moon, it raining and cloudy here now. I shoot the "Super Moon" you spoke of but I did not have my tablet then. The pics came out "ok" but it was my first try and I have learned a lot since then.
I am enjoying this lens more now that I know how to use it.

If you need IS, get the IS version, if you don't, get this one. IS is the only real difference (and weather sealing). I've owned both.

You already have a 24-105 f/4L IS so if you do buy a 70-200 I would get the 2.8 vs f/4 which you already have.

Thanks for the advice, but I don't want the weight,or to spend the extra $$.Just ordered the 4.0 and am waiting patiently.

i have the 24-105 and recently the 70-200 f4 non is, love the weight of the non is and the size., my only comment would be, for mr i need to bump up the iso to get a higher speed, I have very shaky hands. I may upgrade to the IS version in the future.

If you think a lot of the shots on this page are blurry, perhaps you should worry about a new monitor before you get a new lens;)
