Its a great lens, i do not miss IS at all. I handhold it with the 1X4 TC all the time. I know how hard it is to wait for a new lens, into my last week of waiting for a 400 L prime, been saving for ever it seems.

all these were with the 1X4 TC attached and handheld

Thanks, and thanks for the comment on my marbles LOL. Probably 90% of the photos on my flicker stream are with the 70-200 F4. The macros are with the EF-S 60mm macro. Some of the landscapes are with the 19-35 tokina and I use the nifty 50 1.8 on some of my indoor kids photos. So mainly what you see in there are by the 70-200. It’s a great all purpose lens that I will continue to use for a lot of my shots but I look forward to the extra focal length of the 400 prime I’m getting.

I can only offer this...

I thought I knew what my needs would be and was very sure of myself when I got the 70-200mm f/4. Long story shoot, I began shooting more low light than originally anticipated and I've now found that IS would have come in handy on many occasions. I'm not running out to replace the lens just yet but I already see how my needs have changed and now I'm finding that I want something like the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.

At the time I got my 70-200mm f/4 the IS version was not available. I might have gotten that and been fine but now I think I'm going to skip over the f/4 IS and jump to the f/2.8 IS.

Whether or not this is what will happen to you, I can't say and you probably can't either. I just know that 9 months ago I was so sure of myself and now I am thinking very differently because my needs and what I shoot are different, and I couldn't have anticipated that.

Having said that, I think this is an amazing lens and when I'm shooting in daylight it's a dream and I don't have a single compaint. Image quality, color and saturation are absolutely brilliant, and sharp as hell.

If you're not sure, I'd suggest buying a used f/4. You should be able to get one in the $500 range. IF it turns out that you need the IS or f/2.8, you should be able to turn around and sell it at little to no loss. If it does the trick for you, you haven't wasted money on something you don't need. I'm finding that for what I shoot, f/2.8 and IS really aren't that necessary, but I'm lacking a bit in the length dept. Hopefully, I've got a line on a used Sigma 100-300 f/4 that will do the trick for me. But, I've gotten to use this wonderful lens in the meantime, and I doubt I'll take much of a loss when I sell it.

Drama - LOVE the shot!

I went out today for the first time to shoot sports with this lens. Mind you, I am not a sports enthusiast nor am I a sports photographer. I've tracked fast moving jets and gotten good at that but have not used AI Servo to track athletes that are moving in an erratic manner.

These were shot using the Kenko 1.4x TC, f/5.6 and shutter speeds of 1/1000 or better at ISO 200.

I thought they were more appropriate here than in the Photo Sharing forums because I believe they demonstrate the lens, speed of AF and ability to track with the lens more than they show good sports photography.

These are cropped and resized but no post processing.

So Nifty 50 to shoot up close for now, Untill I can get me a short L, and the 70-200 because I want the best bang for the buck on something longer.

In good light focussing speed is not really affected. I did have some trouble locking on to subjects though. I would say that about 10% of my shots would completely miss focus whereas normally I might miss 5% of my shots (shooting sports). This is with the XT though. I better camera with better AF might yield better results.

HI Ned,

Othere may tell you differently but I get amazing results with the Kenko 1.4xTC DG Pro and this lens. There might be a slight change in speed or accuracy of AF but honestly very slight and 9 times out of 10, if I get an out of focus shot it's my fault and not the speed of AF.

I shot an airshow in Atlantic City in August and got superb shots while tracking jets moving a few hundred miles an hour.

Changing the ISO will not change your depth of field. Aperture of the lens is what determines depth of field and you always want to work at the lowest possible ISO to get the depth of field and shutter speed you need for the shot.

r.morales
24th of October 2007 (Wed), 20:51
Sorry , I thought if I raised the ISO the shutter speed increased also - still learning .

TMR Design
24th of October 2007 (Wed), 20:54
If you are working in Manual then obviously all the parameters that control exposure are determined by you. If you're using Av or Tv then you will see either shutter speed or aperture changing as you adjust ISO but ISO does not affect depth of field, per se.

Cap0ne
25th of October 2007 (Thu), 02:36
Sorry , I thought if I raised the ISO the shutter speed increased also - still learning .
If you raise the ISO, the shutter speed will decrease , wich is good for you cause you'll have more chances to get a good shot, freezing the action (example - you'll have same exposure with iso200 + 1/100s + f5.6 and with iso400 + 1/200s + f5.6 ).

But:
-Depth of field is controled only by the aperture. Iso and exposure time have no effect.
-With a larger aperture (like f1.8, 2, 2.8 ) you'll have a smaller DOF than with a smaller aperture (like f4 , 5.6 , 8 etc).
-DOF is influenced also by the distance between you and your subject. The further the subject is, the bigger the DOF will be.

Hope this willl help :)

That kind of helps . I thought in auto , TV , AV - The higher the ISO the smaller the F stop [ f-16 instead of 8 , 5.8 ] or the faster- 1/60 = 1/120 which should make f stop smaller also .
The smaller the f stop = more Depth of field
Sorry , if this doesn't make sense , I am still learning TV auto , and AV . Throw in RAW / it's a hobby and the only books I have are understanding exposure [ good book but not really for digital ] and a few on Photoshop and Illustrator - At least here I can ask dumb questions [ dumb = can learn - haven't yet ] Thanks again .

Hi ozzfavors,

I was out shooting this morning and took some shots for you to see the different field of view when using the 70-200 at 70mm and then at 200mm.

I shot these using my 30D (1.6x crop body) mounted on a tripod. The only change made from the top to the bottom shots is the zoom.

In both sets I was approximately 50 to 60 feet away from the subject (tree in set #2, metal sculpture #2).

Ahh, thank you very much. This helps me out a lot. Looks like within a few months, it'll be the 400D, kit lens, 50mm 1.8, and the 70-200 F/4.0L, thanks again.

I've been reading this thread for three days, ever since my 70-200mm f4/L was delivered, oogling all the wonderful shots. I bought the lens for outdoor action shots and when I do paid equine shoots (all 99% of the time shot on bright sunny days, who wants pictures of them with their horse in the rain?), I understand this is not a good low light lens. But guess what? For the past three days it's been overcast, cloudy and just plain yucky! :( Anyway, my point is I really haven't been able to use it and test it out 'like I intend to use it', or at least test it out in the type of situations I plan on using it in.

I did take a few of the dog the other day and figured I'd add them here, these were processed in lightroom to give them a different 'feel' and to sort of match the frame.
(oh, and she's a white Great Dane with blue eyes ;) )

This last one was hand-held (as all my shots are) but this one was literally 'one-handed' since I had the dog leash in the other hand. I've gotta say I'm impressed with it and so far I'm okay that I didn't get the IS version. If you could see the full size version of this photo you'd see it's nice and crisp, the weight isn't a problem having this lens on my XTi, and I just hope the skies clear and I get a sunny day soon!

Thanks , I like the DOF at 70 - not too fond of the 200 shots . How would you get a better DOF with the 200 ?
Keep things out of picture closer than 20 feet ? By that I mean the things close to subject are if focus and others are out of focus . I want the subject and whats behind it to infinity in focus .
There are some great pictures and examples here .

DOF is a combination of several factors not just focal length. Aperture and distance to subject also play a role. The farther the subject distance the more DOF for the same aperture. So you could effectively have more DOF at 70mm than 200mm.

Check out a DOF calculator to see how all these things change the DOF.

Hi,
I’ve been looking around in this great forum for a while and it has been a great help for my decision to buy my first DSLR, a 40D, as well the 70-200 F4 IS, 100 f2,8 macro and the 24-105.
I’ve been shooting with Canon gears since the 70’ and sold my F1n and all the great FD’s just a couple of month ago.
Hope this new gear will help me with a good start in the digital world.
I mainly do nature, macro and some ‘animals’.
This picture was just for testing the performance of the L wide open. Just great, didn’t regret starting with digital.

What does 100% crop mean ?

it means that you crop a portion of your photo viewed at 100%.
this allows you to look at it at pixel level.

I had the 2.8 IS for a while and it is also great but the f/4 is so small and light weight.
A truly incredible piece of glass.
Don't care much for the hood, wish it was a smaller version of the 2.8 style. :D

adamp88,

Those are some very impressive shots. All are good, but I really like the second.

Outstanding contributions throughout this thread.

I've always been amazed at the image quality at 100% crops that this lens provides.

Thanks a lot Brad. I've actually been considering selling this lens for the IS version but the IQ results make it hard to part with.
