Thanks Robert. I love the 40D, especially since I got one that works now. ;) AF rocks, the VF is amazing compared to my XT, noise is way better too. I had very few missed shots from my trip, only a few action shots of the Saimang Gibbons and one of the Harris Hawk in flight (my technique sucks there though).

This picture may have turned out better if the face was in focus. Manually select a focus point (in this case upper point) as opposed to letting your camera choose one (in your case the camera selected the center and lower point) which affected the area which should have been in focus.

Here's a couple of recent pics that show what a good lens the 70-200 f/4 can be for astrophotos. First, Comet Holmes a few weeks ago:

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/Comet-Holmes-1.jpg

Next, the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, or M45 (I cropped this quite a bit, hence the bigger-looking stars):

Please forgive me asking this, but, 99% of all this pics are so crystal clear, at least to me. These shots were with the non-IS lens?

Did most of you use a tri or mono pod for these? If not, what is your secret for hand held shots?

Ian there is no way this Lens can't be recommended, its just that good for what its designed for. The only reason I'd go for the IS version would be the Stabilization but I keep asking myself is it worth the additional cost for a lens that I don't use very often.

Right well got this lens today at 1pm so at 1.01pm i was out testing it. Think it will take some getting used to, but hear are some simple starts:

Are they sharp, i think they are, well...resizing them has lost a little quality, but you get the idea *some crapness may be down to user error with a new lens lol*

Was that handheld? Very sharp at 1/200s @ 200mm.

Still trying whether to buy this or the 70-300mm IS.

Yes it was Lee _ this lens is excellent at its wide open aperture. I never think twice about not using it a f/4.

I've considered upgrading to the IS version on this Lens but every time I get results as these I can't quite justify the cost difference.

I just returned my 70-300 IS to BH for an exchange - waiting on the 70-200 now!

I bought a refurbished 70-300 and just didn't like it. It was way soft at 300 and I'm a big fan of tripod shooting anyway- just didn't seem like the IS added much to my style of shooting. I'm crazy excited (especially after looking through this entire thread)- should just be a week or so!

I'll join in the fun when my new lens arrives.

shadowkipper,

Though I love this lens, and it's sharp, I do have a hard time handholding it when it's not superbright out, and I am in the market for the 2.8 IS. I have to mention that I'm a bad "handholder", even 1/60 is almost too slow for me. I purchased this one thinking that with a third of the weight, I should be able to get about equally sharp shots, but I am not so sure anymore. But then, I have to admit I haven't tested the 2.8 IS either. Hm.

I do struggle holding the small 400D without the grip when this lens is fitted. With the grip fitted it feels far more balanced and far easier to keep stable.

I would not worry about how it looks, I had the silver 300D with the grip which was black, looked ok and upgraded to the 30D. My hubby just got the 400D (admittedly black) but he would not buy the camera without the grip, big hands and longs lenses.

If you saw me that's the last thing you would say to me; I shoot with the 24-70L most of the time which is much heavier; I just can't hold still, and the longer the focal length, the more pronounced, as we all know!

I like the 70-200, but personally need a lot of light
