Yes it is a Owl, Shot with my 70-200 f4. I guess I would have thought that most intelligent folks would have figured that it was an Owl. LOL The thread was about the lens. If I was going to show off the Owl I would have posted it in the Birds section.
But thanks for pointing this all out.

I just picked mine up second hand off ebay. Was suprisingly light compared to my Sigma 24-60 EX DG. Even with the grip on the camera, I find it kinda *flighty*. Gotta work on my handholding for this one.

No pix yet, but coming up soon.

Great captures in this thread. Hope to have some up soon.

Even on here I've never heard of anyone saying they had a bad copy. Therefore I don't think 'good copy' means anything, and if I may be so bold, overlooks the skill with which it was used in the examples you quoted.

oops! I mean quality. Non IS looks like a good quality I really can't tell the difference between non IS and IS when I compared them. I have looked at archive for IS version. It will be my next lens. I couldn't decide before.

Actually, the colors look fine. The problem I think is that the original photo is in Adobe RGB. Safari (Mac OS X) renders the colors fine. IE and Firefox do not.

I actually deleted the post as it wasn't intended on the assumption as to whether or not some use Mac and most use Windows. I suppose I should have added a disclaimer, my bad -

Just received my Canon 1.4x II Extender from B&H today and I thought I'd share my first test photos. I have never used an extender before so I was not really sure what to expect.

Max zoom, handheld, F5.6, only resized and sharpened slightly in PSP:

http://andycam.no/rot/14x/IMG_3616-01.jpg

same, but full crop insert:
http://andycam.no/rot/14x/IMG_3618-01.jpg

Slightly cropped, center focus:
http://andycam.no/rot/14x/IMG_3620-01.jpg

And then some more creative shots:

http://andycam.no/rot/14x/IMG_3621-01.jpg

Best so far:
http://andycam.no/rot/14x/IMG_3622-01.jpg

So I am very impressed with the results so far! I can hardly notice any difference in IQ at all! Looks to be a great buy for the 70-200!

Well, mine got here and I have a strong feeling it won't be leaving my camera for a while! My God this thing is awesome.

First impression was the solid build. Even better than my Sigma EX.

Second impression once on camera was how well it balanced with the 30D.

Third thing was the USM. I thought it was broken because it was so quiet. The only indication I had that it works is that it focuses lightning fast and deadly accurate!

Fourth thing when I look at images on computer... AMAZING IQ! Sharp as a tack and colors and contrast are amazing. The bokeh is awesome too. Not sure of how the physics work, it would seem Bokeh would be the same with similar specs, but apparently I am wrong (Probably why I got C's in Physics in College). The pics below have ZERO pp except used CS2 for the resize and crop for the 100% crop. No sharpening or contrast or anything...

Ok, quick question to all you guys...

Canon 70-200 f/4L

why didn't you get the IS version?

Was it the cost or something else?

I've seen this for £375 or the IS for £670

Is the IS version worth it?

I went with the non-IS version for two main reasons:

1) Price
2) Majority of all the photographs I take are outdoors during the day. I can usually stick with a shutter speed no slower than 1/400 sec when I'm outdoors and at this speed I dont see a need for IS.

Also keep in mind this thread was started years ago before the IS version was even avaliable. the IS version is 1-2 years old.

The 70-200 non IS can be had for a song when the original buyer wants to upgrade (I went to the 2.8) to a different lens.

I bought mine before the IS version came out. I'd rather save for a 100-400 than use the money to upgrade a lens that's already very good. Here's the shot, taken with the 70-200 f/4, that I'm currently using for my avatar.

yeah I heard about that, except that I was cheching the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 since about a week ago and then seen the f/4 L at about 2/3 the price of the Sigma
as I don't make money out of my photos, I thought it was a good compromise for my budget, of course I would love to have a 2.8L IS, but way out of reach for me right now

This is two members of the flight crew for "Fairfax-1" Police/Medivac helicopter. I took this at the 2008 Command Vehicle Rally this past Friday. It is an annual event that I participate in at work, where Fire, Police, Public Safety organizations as well as several Federal and Military organizations get together for demonstrations and inter-operability testing with their various command and communications vehicles. I was the "official event photographer" this year. There are several public safety magazines that are planning to print pictures in there upcoming issues. I will probably start a new thread with some pictures from the event once I have had time to process them.

Just took the shot today down at Ground Zero. This shot is a reflection off of the windows of the Millenium Hilton that had to be repaired because of the falling of the towers.

my first attempts with my new baby! First is straight out of the camera, the second is cropped a good chunk, and I played with the coloring to fix the turf.

Im sorry if this has been asked or even mentioned in this thread. But, do you find it hard to hand hold this lens at the longer focal length? I guess with enough light It will be possible.

questions for you:
1. How old are you?
2. How much caffeine do you typically consume?
3. Do you typically shoot during the day outside; or inside + nighttime?

IF you're shakey.. Then 1/focal length (meaning 1/200 @ 200 mm) you'll be okay. Slower than that and you might get some blurring because of YOU.

OUTside daytime is NO problem for this lens.

INside a gym or nighttime; you're either going to jack up the ISO or..
- Buy the IS version
- Buy the F2.8 version for the extra stop
- Buy the F2.8 IS so you don't have to worry about anything except for yout credit card. <- Gym membership is no longer a necessary expense if you get this lens :)

200mm * 1.4 = 280 equivalent
Remember; if you use a CANON 1.4 converter; it will tell your camera you lost 1 stop of light; making your F4 lens a F 5.6
If you use a non-Canon TC; then you will have darker shots with the camera THINKING you have only an F4 lens.

Thanks for your reply Tdragone.. I can be pretty shaky at times but, im taking meds for that. Since i mostly shoot outdoors, I think this should work fine. My problem with anything I buy, i dont like being limited by something. HOwever, being limited by my money is a whole differant story. HaHa.
You know I think i should just rent this lens and see how it fairs, then asking questions like this. Maybe its laziness.
