Here are a couple that I took last week at the local minor league baseball stadium. These were taken with my 30D on a monopod from the bleacher seats just a little past 3rd base. This was my first time shooting any kind of sports with my 30D. All of these were AI-Servo with all focus points selected. I was actually impressed with the number of keepers that I got from the night.

I did a quick search early today, and see that a Canon TeleConverter is about $400, is this considered a fair price for a TC ? ( I don't recall the magnification factor however, but it is a pretty penny ).

Ah I just found it, it is a Canon XL 1.6x

thanx paul -- yes i was using a 1.4 TC. the shot of the ostrich was wide open, fully extended and without TC.

I believe the XL nomenclature designates a video format. You should be looking at EF extenders, available in 1.4x and 2x variants.

I can't get the first image to show up, but this original post was on page 22 of this thread ( it's a close up of a woman , very very blurred background, and the lady is super sharp )

I don't know, but something tells me, this wasn't shot at 70mm ( ?? ) there's no way you are going to get that amout of DOF with the lens at 70mm, - correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a Canon 17-85mm lens, and even at 85 mm I can't get this amount of blur going on.

Dave

How far away do you have to be to take a picture like this when using the lens on 70mm?

Same question as above, how far?

David Zeno
16th of June 2008 (Mon), 16:44
Amazing shot ! - crisp and clear. How does that look at 100% crop I wonder. I would have loved to see that.

I love the smoke coming off the barrel of the gun. Amazing !

Here are my favorites. The 70-200mm f/4L is a fantastic lens for the price compared to other Ls.
All pictures taken on my XT.

That's very interesting !

so @ 200mm, one should shoot at 1/320 ? ok good to know.

I always thought 1/125th was more than enough for any lens, but I see I"m wrong. Lots to learn, and I still have to order this amazing lens.

Handholding the lens is not a problem. My wife and I do it all the time. Just make sure you have an adequate shutter speed. Of course each person is quite different but the general consensus is that you should use speeds of at least 1/effective focal length so at 200mm you should be using speeds at least 1/320 for a crop camera and 1/200 for a full frame camera. I have shots taken at speeds slower than this with great results though so it really depends on the user.

David Zeno

Very good images !, I'm glad they were still there TMR Design, it gives me a really good idea of what that 70-200 mm can do !

Dave

Hi ozzfavors,

I was out shooting this morning and took some shots for you to see the different field of view when using the 70-200 at 70mm and then at 200mm.

I shot these using my 30D (1.6x crop body) mounted on a tripod. The only change made from the top to the bottom shots is the zoom.

In both sets I was approximately 50 to 60 feet away from the subject (tree in set #2, metal sculpture #2).

David Zeno
16th of June 2008 (Mon), 19:56
yeah it is indeed an amazing shot. I hope it wasn't photoshopped, ( I don't have the lens yet, and would love to take this kind of quality ! )

Dave.

That reminds me of the famous National Geographic shot :D man i really need to use this lens more.

What do you ppl say about this if i use it for motorsports panning, but only one hand used - on the camera, not on the lense. would it be ok or will it break off eventually if used a lot?

i have problem where i can not use both hands when taking pictures hence why i ask if this lense is ok one handed.

it probably still wont be heavy, but with only one hand it would be very unbalanced.

This is just a rule of thumb and a good starting point. Some can shoot at 1/125 @ 200mm. I have a shot taken at 1/60 for 120mm (rule of thumb says at this focal length use 1/200).

This lens is quite light. I carry this lens around on my 40D by the camera only all the time. That being said you might wish to get the IS version though as it may help steady the viewfinder while panning.

Evening all, or good morning depending on where we all are. In my case it's in the middle east. You might have seen these in the duck photos thread but I thought I would post them here to show what this lens can do.

The only PP on these photos is one shot of USM. Nothing else was done.
I am not to unhappy with this lens. Just might be a bit slow. ;)

I find the colors this lens produces is also acceptable.

If you want to stick with Canon then there is 2 models, a 1.4x and a 2.0x. I would only use the 1.4 as the 2.0 might degrade the IQ too much.

I use a Tamron 1.4 with mine and get great results. Plus I got it for $75 second hand compared to $250 for the Canon.

Thanks mate.

The story behind the shot was that one team had to attack a base and capture the flag and then get it back to their base and hold the other time off for 5 mins. This guy just made a run for the flag under the cover of smoke and then just went for it.

Wow... very interesting... I guess the f4 is in my future. I originally had an f4 Non-IS and it was a fantastic lens. I needed more reach and sold it to get a 100 - 400. Now I'm thinking of getting a 70 - 200 due the versatility it offers. Thanks again... :)

I just bought this lens as my first lens into the digital photography world and I LOVE IT!
Although I do wish it had more reach for the type of shooting I like, but hey this will do to get me started. Here are a few shots of mine taken with it:

A quick question for all 70-200 users.
I am planning to go for 70-200 f/4 non IS (have limited budget :( )
Can i get sharp pics while hand holding this lens? Or will i always need the tripod.

Actually speaking, i dont use the tripod much. Is it a sensible decision to go for f/4 non IS, or should i wait to collect some more money?

Shoot your current lens at f4.

If your shutter speed is around 1/200-1/320th, you will get sharp handheld shots at 200mm even if you shake like Michael J. Fox.

I've gotten sharp results handheld at 1/15th of a second around 80mm with this lens. It's well balanced, and I used my knees as a tripod. :)

If you can stretch it, go for the IS. I've tried it and it's great.

Absolutely! I seriously doubt that many of the pics here were taken using any kind of support. I have managed sharp shots handheld and with my monopod, but I mainly shoot it handheld (including when I use the 1.4x TC). My wife handholds this lens as well. ;)

Will it be a wise decision to sell off my 85mm 1.8 priime for this lens?
I really love the 85mm one, but at times i feel the need of more range, so planning to go for 70-200 f/4 non IS. But budget constraints are pushing up.

Will it be a wise decision? I know i'll miss the 85mm one badly as it is really sharp and i love the IQ.

I wouldn't, but then again I find myself shooting in low light and mostly portraits. It just depends on what you are shooting.

I like the 70-200 f4l's IQ a lot better, and you can't beat Canon L build quality.

They are very different lenses. I've tried both and like them both, 55-250 has IS and is small and light, PQ is very good, easy to use in any environment. 70-200 f4 has better BQ and PQ, but heavy and white, sometime get too much attention. For normal use 55-250 should be good enough but if PQ is priority than go for 70-200 f4.

If you were to go sightseeing, which lens would you take - the 70-200 f4L or the 55-250 is? Is camera shake a big deal with the Non-Is f4l? is a tripod necessary? sorry for all the questions, but thanks for the help!

I had the 55-250 for about a week and sold it. I bought the 70-200mm and im really impressed by the image quality of this lens. Its sharp throughout its entire range. (It doesnt have that red ring for nothing) So far ive taken all my shots handheld with no issues. I think IS can always be helpful but given the conditions you plan to shoot in its not an absolute nescessity. You can get fantastic shots handheld. Just look at the photos in this thread. The results speak for themselves. Not to knock the 55-250 but the 70-200mm is in a completely different league IMO.

You just seem to be a bit confused about spending some money. I was in similar situation till i bought a used 70-200 on this forum. n i dont doubt my decision a bit now.

When you talk about sightseeing, if i have to carry only one lens, then i'll probably go with my 17-55, but just because of the focal length. If i need extra reach, then yes 70-200 is the best for me.

Some points to notice:
* You might face issue with this lens in low light. But its f/4, what do you expect?
* If you are shooting at reasonable shutter speed, this lens wont need IS. Yes, if you need some extra exposure time, then IS is helpful.
* Its not that for every shot you need IS or tripod. Normally for me, a non IS version is good enough.

If i was in your place, i would have no issue in going with 70-200. Try some used good condition lens. I bet you'll love it, plus in case you dont (which i highly doubt) you can always resell it, without loosing any considerable money.

Best of luck
