First shot was handheld 1/40th @ 188mm. Keeper rate was abysmally low and IS would have been extremely helpfulf, but I managed without :)

Awesome shots everyone.
I don't use the AI-Servo too often with my EOS 40D but do have C1 set for AI-Servo\Continuous High Speed\Aperture Priority f/4\ISO 200\Spot Metering. These Eastern Swallowtails have been swarming over my blooming Lantana but don't stay still for long at all. Used the C1 preset with the lens attached to my Gitzo GT0530\Markins Q3.

Better to get a 100mm macro or a 60mm macro... imo
100mm is awesome on full frame and gives such incredible details @2.8 (because its eye bleeding sharp)
60mm is the same.. but more ideal for a portraits on a crop sensor..
both can be used to take nice flower shots with heaps of detail and double as portrait lens's

hello!
thanx for reply!

In answer to the actual question, here are a couple from me at or near minimum focus distance (which is 1.2m).
Here's a skipper moth at 200mm, 1/250, f/8, ISO 200 on a 30D:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/IMG_7367web.jpg
It can work very well for flowers too. Here is one at 163mm 1/500 f/8, ISO 200 also 30D:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/IMG_7368web.jpg
This lens is seriously sharp when you get it right. Here's a 100% crop from the last pic:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/IMG_7368crop100.jpg
I hope that helps you conclude it's a very useful lens, and for the price you get excellent quality. That at least is my view :)
PS I suspect the artefacts are a result of a fairly course conversion straight to JPEG from RAW. In any case, they are not contributed to by the lens.

thanl you for pictures!:)
a like this lens !
i have seen in your gearlist that you own this 70-200 and a 100mm macro.
wicht do you like more?
a prefer macro for 2.8 aperture and close up but i think teh 70-200 f4 is a great lens.
good luck!

Thanks! They are both excellent lenses, but I use them for quite different things normally. The zoom is very versatile, and is small, light, and well-built, all of which make it excellent to handle. Although the macro is a stop faster, I rarely use it wide open. When focussed close, depth of field is very shallow. Of course it goes very much closer, so for maximum close-ups the macro is the one to choose.
If you only want one, you need to think about what you want to photograph. You won't be disappointed with either one in terms of quality. Good luck choosing!

That's just a little curves adjustment, a little burning, and a mild amount of contrast.
I shot with a 430EX behind him to his left (1/4th power), and metered a stop underexposed. Add in the flash to balance the exposure and I think I nailed it!
No sharpening. I love this lens!

These guys really pushed me and the Ai-Servo of my 40D with this lens, specially when mid air!, saying that I was the biggest let down so easy to let focus slip onto the background. None the less it did me well, some may be taken with a Kenko Pro 1.4TC..

so I have a question. What's the difference between the 70-200 f/4L and the 70-200 f/2.8? I know this has been asked before but I did a search and didn't find a good answer.
davo_robbo

2.8 will give you that extra lenience with the aperture, hence better bokeh, probably a bit sharper than the f4 at 2.8.. shooting at 2.8 indoors iss much better than f4, specially when you're shooting at the longer focal lengths and need to get faster shutter speeds

What did you not like about the Sigma? because i need a 70-200 for shooting kitesurfing and im trying to see weather the Sigma would be better over the L f4

Kitesurfing :D My other expensive hobby...haha.
FWIW I had the Sigma version too at one point and didnt like it at all. Always seemed soft and slow to focus. For anything action I would go with the 2.8 but the canon version. You may be able to get away with the f4 since you will most likely be shooting out in the bright sun so you may still get high enough shutter speeds to stop the action.

I had the DG macro version (about 2yrs old) and it was soft at f/2.8 especially past 100mm. So soft, you really don't want to use it- I always bumped it up to f4 or higher. Also, at f/2.8 200mm the image was darker by about 1/3 stop compared to f4 or higher. I don't know it this was a defect or what, but I wouldn't recommend the DG macro lens to anybody. The older non-macro ones are suppose to be the sharpest, and the newer macro II version is suppose to have the softness issue fixed, but I don't think it would be "L" sharp. Also, the 70-200 f/2.8s are way heavy, the f/4 lens weight difference makes it more enjoyable to use.

nice photos on this thread. Im stuck choosing between 70-200 f4 or the 17-40 f4!!!! i have no idea which way to go. i played with both and im still undecided, when i first seen the 70-200 i laughed cause it was ALOT smaller then i thought it was when you see it in pictures it looks so big! and the same with the 17-40.
i am starting to do more portrait work then just random shooting what should i do!?

The 70-200 f/4L is indeed small! Which is a GOOD thing! I had a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and it was large and heavy (same size as any 70-200 f/2.8 lens).
Getting a 17-40 would more or less replace the 18-55 you have now. It would definatly be an upgrade for image quality, but IMO it's a lens best used on a full-frame for wide angle use. Getting a telephoto would open more oportunities especially for outdoor work. If you are planning to shoot portraits and use indoors, I think you should look at a different lens altogether, perhaps a zoom with f/2.8 like a Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (which all will be around or below the price of the Canon lenses). Or, add another prime to your collection like an 85 1.8 or 100 f/2.8
bhardwaj.deepak
25th of October 2008 (Sat), 12:46
I did not understand your confusion. These two lenses are separate class all together. Just see what you want to shoot, whether you need a wide angle or a telephoto. N you are done. But if money is a constraint, then I agree to the Tamron 17-50 and Canon 85 1.8 combo.

If you just shoot outside in good light mainly, the non-IS should be fine. But if you want to use it indoors, or if you aren't all that steady with a camera, the IS version is definatly a bonus. Also you'd be able to shoot at a lower ISO, if that's important to you. The IS version also has full weather sealing (not something that I would need, but it's there).

I've had the non IS for about a year now, and I love it....but when I go to the zoo these days, when the weather is not sunny......the photos come out more blurry, because it gets to dark to soon. For me time to save for the IS. But it depends on what you wanna shoot ofcourse....

The non-IS is a wonderful value, but the more I use it the more I wish I had IS in a lot of situations.
