To be honest, if I was going by the photos on this thread....it doesn't appear to be any sharper or have more pop than what I've seen by the 70-300 IS.
When I see pics posted by the 70-200 2.8 L IS I can go "wow....I can really see what that lens can do", but for all the talk of the 70-200 f/4, most of the shots I've seen are great, but not amazing image quality wise.
Is it just me?
No offence to anyone's photos, I'm talking image quality only etc.
Just you but I am not sure what your looking most of these are great. I have always been a huge supporter of the 2.8 70-200 but these have me changing my mind

The photo I posted above (the big horse looking at you) was taken on a pretty dreary day. iso was upped to 800 to get a decent shutter speed. It will be tough shooting birds in flight without good light, but larger/slower animals are doable even in less than perfect conditions.

you could swap it for a teleconverter depending on what its worth, possibly an image quality advantage plus more portable than two images.

In my experience the 70-200 is so much sharper than the 100-300 that you could crop and enlarge the L's image at 200mm to the same size as the other at 300mm and it would still be sharper. You could see how much you use both over a longer period, but my bet is you'll never use the 100-300 again.

The way I learnt more about using the camer (don't know if it made me any better) was to use "m" mode and force myself to learn what each setting would achieve. Most of it was learning through my mistakes. So many missed opertunities through bad shots.

Yes that's what I like to do. Usually shoot at ISO400 or more just to get a nice fast shutter speed. It works great outdoors, but if you want to use it indoors then the IS would be a big help.

Is it worth spending extra $400.00 to get this lens with IS. If not, how do you avoid camera shake especially on maximum zoom? Bump iso?
First off... I absolutely love this lens. But... after a difficult day today with f4, I would have to say if you are considering spending extra money on this lens you may rather consider the 2.8 version without the IS. And yes... bump the ISO as well as monopod, tripod and even the "poormans" IS. All in all, the IS would have been nice today also, but I'd rather get my shutter speed faster optically as my first priority since it also gives better background falloff. Just my 2 pennies.

I'm a DSLR newbie; I bought my way into this hobby with a 40D, this lens, and the nifty-fifty. I must say that I am SO glad that I splurged for this lens. The image quality is just so awesome, I can't get over it.
Anyway I'm finding out that the operator is just as important than the lens. I doubt my skills can compare with the amazing individuals on these fora. That being said, here is my feeble attempt at a decent photograph with this lens.

That is a great deal, you can definatly sell it for more then you paid for it. If you were to sell it for $450US (which would be a very good price) you'd make $100 with the US-CAD conversion! Of course BUYING in USD is now the problem for us Canadians.. lol

1/800 Sec. ISO 200, f/7.1 but got similar results with other settings...
1/320 Sec. ISO 100, f/6.3
1/500 Sec. ISO 100, f/7.1, and so on.
I just reviewed my shots on the LCD until I got some that were dark enough to show detail, then I just played with the settings and shot away so I could see which were the sharpest once I downloaded them. I love digital... you can "waste" shots all day/night long for the cost of recharging your battery :D.

Yeah, Av (and probably Tv) will produce slow shutter speeds on a moon shot because of the way the scene is metered. You probably had it in Evaluative ( ) or Center-Weighted Averaging mode (0).
Spot-metering would be the best way (if you attempted to meter it), but even then, I think the moon is barely big enough to cover 3.8% of the frame in the middle @ 200mm. Thus the shutter speed recommendations would still probably be off some.
About the only good way to shoot the moon is trial & error in M. Set the aperture & ISO where you want them and I'm sure within about 5-7 shots of varied shutter speeds, you can get it dialed in perfect.

As John_TX suggested, trial and error in Manual. Slow shutter speeds will make the moon way too bright to get any detail. All you'll get is a bright white ball.

okay, these are the first pics i've posted and the first two were actually taken by my wife with our XT. We decided to brave the elements and go to our local little zoo. we learned a bit about trying to stay dry while shooting. with umbrellas in one hand and cameras in the other, we actually got a couple of shots that were cool. most of the animals were in their shelters or behind some pretty fierce wire grated fences. i had the 50D with the 2.8L IS and i'll also post to that lense's thread.
anyway, here's the duck:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_pY9qGzBBDds/SXvF5WNL9ZI/AAAAAAAABpE/rpITHa7UM_M/s800/anjaduck1200c.jpg
this was shot raw with a little relight in lightzone. iso800, f5.6, 1/125 (and those are raindrops, but the cameras survived!)
here's another:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_pY9qGzBBDds/SXvFGgU-MEI/AAAAAAAABoo/JnNkiP4xCaQ/s800/img_0806c.jpg
also converted from raw, iso800, f8, 1/125. this lense puts out some beauties. we have the f2.8L IS as well, but we bought this one just for the XT to shoot dressage and we are very happy with it.
here's one taken during a light rain from our front porch:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_pY9qGzBBDds/SXvFkCawp7I/AAAAAAAABo4/yCFRZrEHT-Y/s800/img_0786c.jpg

hey moose, no sharpening, just adjusting the highlights and shadows in lightzone and only slightly at that. the originals were only slightly noisy when examined at 100% in the bokeh area, i figure it's the result of iso800 more than anything else. also being raw they tend to come out neutral in color and tone, hence some contrast treatment in lightzone. the main thing is that we were so impressed with the performance of the f2.8L IS that we had to have another L, and since we use both cameras to shoot equine events, during the day, we bought this lense. and it really worked out.
on our website, most of the dressage shots at the twin river ranch show from last weekend (1/18/09) were done with the XT and the f4L. out of 775 shots taken i probably threw out 50 and most were because the riders had their eyes closed or weird looks on their faces! a lot better ratio than we ever had with the cheapo zoom we'd used before!
