Hey ed
Nice pics. The exif data for your first and last photos say they were shot at 280mm focal length. How comes? Were you using an extender?

I have a question. I am gonna get this lens very soon and I saw that tehre are 2 switches on it. I think unless the pics fooled me.
I know that one is for AF/M focus
but what does the other one do.
Thanks

Focus limiter switch, no?
Minimum focus distance switch.
05Xrunner
28th of February 2006 (Tue), 15:32
what does that do
tommykjensen
28th of February 2006 (Tue), 15:44
what does that do
It has 2 positions. One is 1,2 meter and the other 3 meter. If You know the subject You are going to photograph is more than 3 meters away You can set the switch in the position 3 meter and save some focus time because the lens does not need to consider the distance 1,2 to 3 meters.
dougsmit
28th of February 2006 (Tue), 15:45
By limiting the range of the autofocus to 3 meters or farther away, the speed of focus can be increased. If the switch is set at the closer setting, the system has to consider nearer distances as well and that extra space can slow down the time it takes to lock on to the focus point. Most better telephoto lenses have this switch.

28th of February 2006 (Tue), 15:55
AHHHH i see.
So if there was a stick in the air like 1.8meters away it wouldnt try to waste time putting it in focus or am i getting this wrong

If the switch is set to 3 meters thats correct.
dougsmit
28th of February 2006 (Tue), 16:00
Yes. Even if there is nothing there, the lens needs to rack itself in and out looking for the point that the focus is sharpest. It does not know that there is nothing close until it goes and looks. That wastes time that you can save by telling it that there is nothing inside 3 meters worth seeing.

Am I right in thinking it would good if you were taking shots of say motorsport through a fence which was really close to you (the fence that is) ???
dougsmit
28th of February 2006 (Tue), 16:22
Sounds like a #1 use for the feature but, in practice, if the AF sensor is covered by something too close, the camera will return an 'unable to focus' dot in the finder. I just confirmed this trying to shoot through a window. Whether this worked for your fence might be a question of how heavy was the wire and how accurately it covered the AF sensor in use.

To be honest, if I was going by the photos on this thread....it doesn't appear to be any sharper or have more pop than what I've seen by the 70-300 IS.
When I see pics posted by the 70-200 2.8 L IS I can go "wow....I can really see what that lens can do", but for all the talk of the 70-200 f/4, most of the shots I've seen are great, but not amazing image quality wise.
Is it just me?
No offence to anyone's photos, I'm talking image quality only etc.

No offense taken.
Image quality wise the 70-200mm f/4L is the same (or best according some) then the 70-200mm f/2.8L (IS or not). Here you have a nice review of the three 70-200mm by Philip Greenspun http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/70-200
What I think you like to see more on the 70-200mm f/2.8L is the shallow DOF, isolating better the subject from the background.

Selective focus is about the only effect you'll be able to see in photos sized for a computer screen, unless you do an A-B comparison. I also made some medium-format images at Crater Lake, and the L zoom performed well in comparison to a high-end Sonnar prime, when considering flare and contrast. Most zooms are not on the same planet when it comes to flare (and by flare I mean washing out and not ghosts of specular highlights), and require contrast enhancement during post-processing to correct. The L's color is also vibrant. And it's sharp enough and rich enough so that you can crop and still have a good image. Again, you can't see that in a monitor-sized image.

The convenient size and relative inexpensive price (compared to the f/2.8 and f/2.8IS) makes this a great lens.
