Just got the new canon 420ex flash in. Also got an extra 15 bucks for canons rebate. Cost of flash was 150 bucks. Tried out flash for last couple of days. Shot about 150 shots and flash is still going strong. I think this flash fits the 3 and 5 perfectly. Its not big and bulky to me. I use an omibounce on it also. It DOES make a difference. The 16 bucks is worth it. Don't need the 550 as I use a monolite if I need extra power. As for pics, I've got to say this flash unit makes taking pictures idiot proof. I've found best results to be in program mode or auto. If u need extra depth of field then Av is fine. I do notice you can get different exposure levels depending on what metering method u use. I tested a few inside shots while trying to exposure the outside correctly too. It did a nice job. This flash is worth every penny and the easiest to operate. At low light levels you may have a problem with focusing. With the auto assist beam, you may have to try a couple of times to set focus. But you have to do that anyway without the flash to get a good pic. Anyway I do luv the flash and highly recommend it. It beats the livin hell outta the built in flash.

I agreed. I love the 420EX flash with Omni bounce & G5 combination. I brought it from B&H, NY via the net. For my first try, I took a family group picture with this new flash on and also with the Canon Wide converter lens. The pictures came out great. Since this flash is good, I went to Ritz Camera next morning and purchased the $48.00 Off Camera Shoe cord 2. With this cord, my Marco lighting is perfect too! This Canon G5 package rocks!

My set up:
G5
420EX Flash w/ Omni Bounce
Canon Off Camera cord 2
Canon LADC58B Adapter
Canon WC-DC58N Wide Coverter
Canon TC-DC58N Tele Converter
Two 512MB Sandisk Ultra CF Card

Hoya 58MM Infrared RM72 Filter
Tiffen 58MM812 Filter
Hoya 58mm Circular PL
Hoya 58MM Close-up Kit +1, +2, +4
Sunpak Mini samll Tripod.
Lowepro Nova 3

** Next purchase - Extra battery and a off camera charger.

Since you mention the rebate, I just thought I'd add that Canon's pretty good with rebates. So long as you send in the appropriate proof-of-purchase-from-authorized-dealer stuff, they'll get the check to you within about 5 weeks.

I bring this up, because some companies aren't quite so reliable when it comes to mail-in rebates, or take six months to send you the check.
