... I believe the 24-105 is very well suitable for walkaround purposes on crop.

I agree. I've used a 24-105 on a 20D/50D/7D as well as a 5D Mark II.

I don't have any complaints about the lens outdoors with a crop body, but there are occasions when (because of the 1.6 crop factor) I'm too close to my subjects when shooting indoors. I ordered a 17-40 to compliment the 24-105 specifically for this reason.

+1, it's a tough lens to use when trying to capture "the moment" during an indoor shoot. The 17-40 or the 17-55 would be a better lens for those situations on a crop body.

Here's a shot I took with the 24-105... nothing fancy, but it has some nice bokeh... :D

I was actually supposed to be more of an HDR image...it didn't turn out the way I expected, but I still like it. I combined the 7 images I took, merged them to HDR, played with the levels, and did some light dodging to the pool.

I always use the hood as well unless i use a filters, i mean i keep the hood on all the time will not harm the lens or the shot, and in fact i love the lens look with hood than without hood even that doesn't do for the shot [situations where the hood will not have an effect or helpful use].

For somebody who got the manual with this lens, what does it say about the filter completing the weather-sealing on this lens? Is it for additional moisture prevention or to complete both dust/moisture sealing on this lens?

I did not get a book with my lens so just want to make sure/clarify. I have a Hoya HD filter on it (which is incredible!) but just curious.

Thanks!

pdpwee

Thanks for the replys. I will now try to get in the habit of useing the hood always. Now as far as the filters, are you saying you don't use a filter ever, not even a UV filter?

Invertalon
1st of February 2010 (Mon), 19:02
Me?

I use a filter off/on usually... But I never really notice a difference in IQ between them (but I use high quality filters, so I would expect very little IQ loss).

I was just curious about how the filter effects the weather-sealing on this lens, if it is required for both dust/moisture, or just additional moisture prevention (which I thought I had read somewhere). Canon doesn't have the lens manual online to read, sadly. Ill check out the 5DM2 manual and see if it has it in there (like my 7D had the "kit" lens in it). Ill check that out.

amyandmark3
1st of February 2010 (Mon), 19:06
pdpwee: I never use a UV filter, just the hood for protection. I'm not saying either way is better, I just fall on the side of not using them. If you want to read the merits of using a UV filter vs. not using one, do a search and you'll probably get lots of results. I think there's even a topic about the subject pinned to the top of one of the forms (probably the Ef / Ef-s forum).

Edit/add: Here's the link I was talking about: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=807555

invertalon: Here's a quote from Bob Atkins' web site regarding the 24-105L:

It's a fully weather sealed lens, meaning it has gaskets behind the switches, focusing and zoom rings as well as at the lens mount. The lens mount seal is only fully effective when the lens is used on body with weather seals, which are basically the EOS 1 series bodies. Canon recommend the use of a UV filter (77mm) for extra protection if the lens is used in the rain.

After having another day with my 24-105, I can say, it probably surpasses the 70-200 in sharpness (at least my copy) from 24mm up through 85mm. It drops a hair of sharpness from 85-105, but very minor bump in sharpness makes it just as good.

I was hoping when I bought this lens that it would be close to the sharpness of my 70-200. I was not expecting it to be level, if not better. Super happy :D

LOVE this lens so much!

I'm happy with the sharpness of this lens. I've never compared it to the 70-200, but I'm quite happy with the sharpness of that lens as well:)!

I have done some comparisons with the 24-70 and it holds up well to that lens as well, which is why I don't mind grabbing this for a walkabout lens.

I haven't been able to shoot much since the fall but I can say that this lens hasn't left my camera since I got it a few month ago. I can't even bring myself to take it off for action shots because it performs so beautifully for me even then. I love my 70-210 but the 24-105 just has a little something extra.

Has anyone used this for a wedding lens? This person uses it:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Wedding-Lens.aspx

but it was not mentioned here:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=814601

I was wanting the 24-105 as a walk-around but thinking its not fast enough for indoor events like wedding receptions.

Not my intention to hijack the thread so feel free to PM me. Thanks!

It is a nice shot, but it is over exposure, you should put f11-16 and lower the shutter speed to 15" or 20" and see the difference.

We totally got a bad copy with our 5D mk2 at my work. We shoot facing down with the camera parallel to a table with flat rocks on the table. We level everything out so it is a flat focus plane. Our corners are just mush with this lens. I brought in my 50mm f/1.4 and 100mm f/2.8 macro and tested f/4-11 between all three lenses with the 24-105 zoomed in to match the primes.

I've heard from numerous people that the quality control for this lens is just not up to par. If you get a good copy it's great, but the bad ones are crap.

This is the only image I have easy access to right now. It's one I prepared to show my bosses.

JVS, what does the code UX made in 2009 have to do with it? I also have a copy that I got on Friday which I am quite unhappy with. The pix are noticeably soft with out any pixel peeping. I've turned the IS off, its on a tripod, studio work, I'm just SAD. I really wanted this lens.

Thinking of trading up from my 17-40 to a 24-105. I LOVE my 17-40 but I'm coming to the realization its just not a walk-around. Does anyone think losing the 7mm on the wide end is a disadvantage to gaining 65mm on the long end? I wish I could get both, but I just can't afford the overlap, at least for the next few months.

If I had to choose between the two I'd have to go for the 24-105 (on a 5D) -- I'd miss the longer focal range for a walkaround lens. I have a 16-35 but it is not used as much as the 24-105.

Agreed! I sold my 17-40 because it wasn't being used enough due having the Tamron 28-75 as my walk-around lens. Having 105mm on the long end would be sweeet and sacrificing a few mm on the short end would be worth it to me.

I third that, 24mm is still pretty wide on full frame. I still want a 17-40 though. I should probably stop lurking around the lens forum.

I should say, though, that the choice for the 24-105 applies to me for shooting full frame. If I was shooting a 1.6 crop, I'd probably reverse the choice because having the ability to shoot wide is important. Silly, isn't it? But other people have different preferences. And, on my 1D3, which is a 1.3 crop, I'm happy with either!

I have both the 24-105 and the 17-40mm and love them both. I bought all of my lenses with the intention of upgrading to FF in the future and didn't want to have to sell lenses then.

Sure the 17-40 isn't as wide on my crop body but for me it was good enough and I didn't want to spend the money to go down to a 10mm that would only work on a crop body. Now that I have a FF Body I can really appreciate both the 17-40 and the 24-105 they are the two lenses that I use 95% of the time.

I know opinions vary and you need to make the decision as what is best for you to invest in, the good news no matter what is that unlike bodies lenses are forever and hold their value very well. Most of the lenses I've bought over the years have appreciated so if I ever decide to sell them I will get my original investment back or in some cases maybe even make a profit.

Thanks, I may just be trying to rationalize my 24-105 purchase, but the 17-40 seems a bit too wide on FF. I really liked it on my crop but I'm not a fan on FF, its great for landscape, but I hate to tie up $650 that I could put toward a 24-105 and use in the same situations.

If you think it's too wide then there's no reason to keep it. And in your case the 24-105 would make the perfect allround lens.

I used to own the Tokina 11-16 (and rarely used it, I was totally fine with 18mm) for my crop camera. When I bought my 5D I first bought a Tamron 28-75, then the 70-200 F4 IS (and quickly followed by the 24-105 because a nice deal) Personally I think 24mm is plenty wide, only downside is the distortion. I always thought the 17-40 would be my first L lens, but now a year later I still haven't bought it. My next lens will probably be the 135L

Seems like the 24-105 is the lens for you. If you were happy with the 17-40 on a crop, then the 24-105 on FF will give you about 3mm on the wide end, 41mm on the telephoto end and IS!!

This was the first time I had taken my 5D2 to London, and really enjoyed it. Definitely taking it again soon, as there are so many places to see, just want the weather to be a bit better next time.
