YAAMON, great use of negative space, good DOF, clarity and sharpness are outstanding. If I was to pick it would be a bit more dogging on the front of the building to bring out detail. Otherwise a very good shot. Since you have image editing on I took the liberty.

w7cma, thank you for your comment, Im not too experienced with landscape photography or photo editing.

You editing looks good, I have to read up on the dogging to bring out certain scene.

On this photo I did no color or post processing. All I did was from raw to jpeg and used photoshop to resize and sharpen on final output.

As I was walking around I thought that from this angle it would be a good photo. I now I know why you need a wide angle lens for landscape photography. Maybe next time I travle I will borrow my friends 17-40mm.

I normally do candid portraits with min processing. Wish I knew more how to use photoshop. :)

You are welcome YAAMON, If you learn Photoshop you will have a whole new world to ply with. I do not have a wide angle lens, I take multiple shots and stitch them together in Photoshop. This photo is a panorama made up of 17 shots all hand held and stitched ip PS4.

Thanks Luke. Yeah, I hear ya about the slant. Tried to fix the tilt in post and no matter how I try to tilt it, I end up with something that bothers me. Either the flag poles are not completely verticle or the roof is not horizontal. :D

Hey all, I am thinking about trading my 17-55IS for a 24-105L. I shoot crop but dont seem to use the wide end of the 17-55 very much. I find alot of my shots ranging from 35mm-85mm most of the time. I love the results I get from the 17-55 but find the range a bit limiting. Just wondering if anyone has done the same thing and why, (that is trading 17-55 for 24-105). I shoot portraits mainly and family events. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just did virtually the same thing. I went from the Tamron 17-50 2.8. I found few of my shots at 17mm and the majority were at 50mm. My only regret is losing the 2.8. I don't think 70 is enough reach either though, which is why I went with the 24-105 over the 24-70. All around I'm very happy with my choice.

This lens is a great choice on a FF camera, and it seems it works well on a 1.6 crop as well. None of my Nikon friends seems to have a similar lens - does one exist for them?

Unless you really need a faster lens than the 24-105L I'd go with that. The zoom range is ideal on a FF for a walkaround lens.

After I look at it on the big screen, I kind of wish I had closed down the aperture a bit more. I needed a tad more DoF than I got at f/6.3.

Jon, how about comparing sharpness between 135L and 24-105L?

Daniele

They're both sharp lens. In most cases, I can barely tell (ever so slightly) which was shot with my 135L when pixel-peeping for contrast/sharpness. The 135 is noticeably sharper wide open-f/5.6 than the 24-105 at the same apertures and the other typical prime vs. zoom stuff. When shooting at higher aperture, you won't notice a difference. IS does come in handy though. If you're worried about your pictures looking nothing like your 135's as far as quality, that's not the case. Yes, you will notice slight differences, but it will take you longer to find them than it will to apply a very slight smart sharpen. Great lens overall.

Hope that helps!

EDIT: I'll see if I can get some shots with the 24-105 and 135 today if I can.

This is the 36 inch "Great Lick Refractor" telescope at the Lick Observatory on top of Mt. Hamilton CA. It was built at the end of the 19th century, with all the parts being hauled up the mountain by horse and wagon. It is still in use today. It's very dark in the room so these are a bit noisy at 3200 ISO, but still came out pretty good I thought.

This lens is just so excellent!

I still get suprised how sharp it is for a zoom. I was looking at images from this past weekend suprised on how sharp and crisp it is. The sweet spot though, is f/5 (closed 2/3 stop), in which you really don't increase sharpness much, but get rid of the CA (if high contrast).

Such a pleasure to use... I don't see myself ever giving it up. Plus, if I ever go FF this lens will fill the walk-around boot very nicely :D

Heh! Well, sure, since it is no way an UWA lens:)!

It first came out as a "kit lens" for the 5D Classic, similar in range on a full frame to the EF-S 17-85 IS that had come out for the crop cameras back then. On FF it makes a very nice wide to medium telephoto zoom. On a crop camera it makes more of a middle-range zoom which may or may not be real useful but is still a constant f/4 with IS and good image quality.

same here - would much rather have IS than 2.8 (for what I'm going to be using it for...)
For wedding/event (low-light) type photography, I would have definitely gotten the 24-70...
But for an all-around/vacation lens (what I wanted) the 24-105 is what I saw fit...

I got the 24-70 before getting the 5D/24-105 kit, so it wasn't a struggle:)! I could see how the 24-105 coud be a great walk-around lens, light and compact, with IS and a constant f/4 are really handy, and it has more shots on it than my 24-70, although I do use them both.

I was undecided between the two for a while, chose the 24-105 in the end. Why?

- I like the added reach.
- F/2.8 is not really fast to me. I have the 24-105 as a walkaround lens and I will soon add fast primes for low light stuff.
- The IS is helpful to me.

I don't really care about the lighter weight and the smaller size. I tried both lenses and decided that the 24-105 is a better fit for me.
