I seem to pick up a fair amount of glare even with a hood on, where would I find the best UV filter for the 24-105L?

When you pick up glare, are you talking about from the sun? With the hood on you shouldn't get glare unless bright light is in your field of view -- if it is glare can happen with any lens. And a filter will only make things worse. Do you have a sample uncropped pic you can post?

I had one for a while, but rarely used it as it was soft soft soft.... Even on a tripod in great light I could never be certain of a sharp image. Very frustrating to have such an expensive lens, but not wanting to use it

I have to agree with you. I bought mine when I bought my 5Dc new several years ago, and it is by far my least favourite lens. I wouldn't describe it as "soft" exactly, but images taken with it don't seem to have the spark and crackle I would have hoped for. Trouble is, living in the third world I can't get the lens checked to see if it's faulty, so I just end up not using it.

Both the barn and garage opens up to the west so the main light in both images is the sky after the sun had already set.

I originally owned the 24-70 but exchanged it for the 24-105 just for extra reach as at the time I could not afford anthing longer i.e the 70-200 - that was the only reason but I soon found out that 2.8 made a huge difference for both seperation and indoor photography such as portraits. The 24-105 copy I had was not as sharp as my original 24-70..

It's crazy how much variation there is.....I had both lenses for a while and I tested them both extensively...when pixel peeping the 24-70 was slightly sharper at f4 and the 24-105 had slightly better color and contrast.

I shoot with lighting so stopped down to f/8-11 about 99% of the time and there was no difference between these two lenses in that range and I chose to have the IS. If the 24-70 ever gets updated, I'll be switching though...

I did not own the 24-105 long enough to give it good review / test but it's far from a poor lens!

24-70 F/2.8 L IS (Hopefully Soon) will be a worthy upgrade!

Thanks for replying! I'm just looking for the lens that I can use all around. But now, reading couple of topics on this forum, I am wondering whether I should just upgrade to a full frame like 5D with this Canon EF 24-105mm lens. Are there any other good Canon L lenses with a smaller range - about 25-75mm..? I just don't think 105 is that necessary... maybe I'm wrong..

I used to have the 5Dc and used this lens as the main lens. Then, with the 50D I didn't use this lens all that much nor was I as happy with it on a crop body (didn't go wide enough and often had to carry around the 16-35mm as well). Now with the 5D2, the lens is back in its groove.

I suggest you keep the lens and upgrade to a 5Dc or 5D2.

Extraordinary image!!

Can anyone suggest a reliable way for me to check whether my copy of this lens is front- or back-focussing? It seems to me that something is wrong, but the hassle and potential cost of getting it to Canon is a major disincentive, and I feel inclined just to dump it back in the bottom of my camera bag where it normally resides.

Flare is nicely controlled with this lens (which is good because I rarely use the lens hood - too big for a walk-about) but the star pattern isn't to my liking.

Two extreme lighting examples (hood wouldn't be effective in these shots anyway I know)

Well then, I had a "funny" night last night!

Late at night, I had a quick invite to accompany my daughter to a friend of hers' house for a little pre-Halloween get-together with the understanding that we would both bring our cameras (my daughter has an XTi) so I shrugged off my impending sleep and grabbed a camera (my 1D3) and a flash, and I in my muddled state I assumed I had put my 24-70 on because that's the lens I normally use for this type of casual people shooting. We went, spent a couple hours hobnobbing and doing some shooting. In the pretty cramped quarters and dim light I scrambled to get some decent settings and just clicked away, not doing much chimping.

Well, today I didn't have the use of my photo editing PC with Lightroom, so I loaded my shots onto my little laptop and used DPP to check things out.

So, a few "funny" things -- I had forgotten that I had switched my camera to shoot jpegs yesterday just to test something out, I saw that I had messed something up, I believe my flash exposure compensation, at some point in the evening and a fair number of my shots were not well exposed, and then, eventually, it dawned on me that I had grabbed the 24-105!

That's not bad, I do like using this lens, just kind of the crowning "funniness":)!

Despite the jpegs (which DPP is not so good at working with for me) I did manage to get some decent "party snapshots", so WhooHoo!

And I survived and made it home in one piece, and the 24-105 served me well!

Some shots from some of my experiences in Yellowstone this summer. While not technically good shots, they are sure going to be nostalgic for me!

1.) Some of the awesome mountains surrounding Koch Basin, in the Madison Range.

2.) The scene that greeted me upon entering Hilgard Basin, in the Madison Range. Echo Peak is the dominating mountain.

4.) Looking up at Imp Peak's summit tower from about halfway up the south couloir. Also located in the Madison Range.

Things I'm beginning to discover:

Good
• As sharp as my old Tamron 17-50 in most cases
• IS works like a charm
• It's a bit bulky but mugger-clobberingly tough

Bad
• Hellish vignetting at 24mm. I suspect my lens might have a slight flaw, as occasionally the extreme top corners look almost as if the hood is slightly protruding into the frame. Got a great deal on it, so not complaining to much!
• Bad (but correctable) CA at wide angles
• Not really any "zoom creep," but my copy acts almost like a push-pull zoom. Often when I adjust my CPL, I end up pushing the zoom back 10mm or so.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it, despite its imperfection. For the incredible versatility, it's a pretty fantastic package (though if I'd paid over $1k for a new one I might not feel so positive).

I'm so close to owning this lens. I just need to sell a few lenses. Grr.

I notice you seem to be looking to move over to a 5D and a 24-105. If I might confess something...given my current camera use (general landscapery and travel) I sometimes wish I'd just kept my 17-50, gotten a 7D and had money left for another lens. At the moment the only real improvement I've gotten out of moving from my old 40d/17-50 to the 5d2/24-105 is a bit of extra range and the huge megapixel increase. Which aren't exactly small potatoes, mind you.

However, my Sigmalux is a billion times better on my 5d2 than it was on my 40D, and I'm loving the DoF differences (which, obviously, the 24-105 isn't going to showcase very well). So the future is bright with the FF switch...but at the moment I can't deny the occasional wistful thought toward my old combo.

This lense definitely good for a all around travel lense

look like i got a choice of getting a 70-200 F4L or this 24-105 F4L .

With a x 1.6 camera seen like 70-200 is a better choice to provide extra coverage compare with 24-105 F4L any comment ?

Yes, it is an awesome scene. If you could get it on a blue shy day with maybe some cloud detail, it would make for a beautiful print.

I've never seen that, not even with a CPL on. I did once try doubling up filters and then I got into vignetting. Does yours vignette with no filter attached?

Agreed. This lens is on my 7D most of the time. I'd say 70% of the time. My 135L gets most use during events and sports, then my 50 f/1.4 is for portraits, special projects, etc.

How is the 24-105L on a crop? I like it on FF, but on crop I think I'd miss the wide end.

When did the word "sick" acquire its current meaning? I've only noticed it in the last couple of months, and I certainly don't know anyone personally who uses it in the sense you just did. To me "sick" has an altogether different meaning, one which I won't be dropping any time soon.

Not wide enough for a general walk-about on a cropper. I typically had to carry the 16-35mm along with this lens when using the 50D.

Works perfectly with a FF IMO.

I love it. I never found the 18-55 range useful as a walk around lens as I always needed more reach and less wide angle. There are times where the lens just isn't wide enough, but I'd say 95% it fits my shooting style perfectly. When the time comes, I'm sure I can blow some money on a 10-22 or 11-16 ;)

@staszek: thanks!

now I think of it I find myself using the wide end(24-35mm) and long end most of the time (but not much in between, that's why i never thought about buying the brick) when I need more reach, I grab my 70-200. On crop I would be happy shooting with a 17-55 and 70-200.

I used to use the 17-85mm on my 450D most of the time so the 24-105mm on the 5DMk2 suits me just fine at the moment :)

I hate this thread. It made me buy the lens :( :D haha. Just bought it. Expecting to arrive in the next 4 days. Will be using it on my 60D. All these photos helped me to decide to buy it first over every other lens (other than my 18-55IS kit). The colours, contrast and sharpness look brilliant. I was able to pick it up for $938 + an extended 24 month warranty :) Had to do it while the dollar is good. I usually only use the wide angle walking around the city, but find I need the extra zoom for everything else. I hope to post some pics soon.

Congrats. You'll love it. Word of advice: keep your 18-55 for when you need the wide angle.

Thanks Staszek. Thats exactly what I was going to do :) Who knows, if I have the money later on the 17-55 or Tamron 17-50 may come into play instead. But next might be the sigma 1.4. I just cant wait to get this lens as it seems to have some of the best pics I have seen.

Hey Ching, awesome shots there. The colours are amazing. How do you find the lens on your crop? I will basically have the same setup as you. Should be getting mine delivered this week.

I like the wide range of zoom it provides as well as vivid contrast and color. I keep my 18-55IS just in case i need wider but it never happens

It also takes excellent portraits when zoom beyond 70mm + wide open. The background at 105mm is so blurred!

I think this is the best general purpose L lens, great for traveling. You can always decide go wider or longer zoom later on based on the usage on this lens.
