Funnily enough, I have no problem with the bokeh rendering of the 24-105. If I compare it at f/4 to the 85mm at f/4, I don't find it compares that badly.

I don't notice it at all. some people are just far to anal ubout these things. I get paid to take photos, the people at the magazine never say "oh should have used the 24-70 as the bokeh of that 24-105 shot sucks."

LOL of course they are not going to say anything. The photographer is the expert and as the expert he should know what lens to use for the right situation. If i am taking shots of the shuttle I will go with a 600mm f/4 L IS and if I am going to take shots of the president at the white house along with the press I will bring the 70-200mm f/2.8
Hmm, let's see, anal? Well if we were not "anal" as you say, then why the heck would Canon invest in development and sell over 30 different type of lenses. Funny isn't it.

different lenses are used for different jobs and wallets. the fact is that 95% of people would either not notice any difference or if they did they would not give a hoot.

I've gotta stop seeing all these wonderful photos from the glass that I don't have.
It tempts me to make many scenarios of illogical decisions. (i.e, get rid of 16-35L and get 24-105L)
Calm down....right now I just need 85 1.8......I'm okay.....for now......

I was out today to shoot landscapes or some scenes with both 1Dsmk2 and 5D (30D was available as backup), you know that i didn't get rid of 16-35L and 24-105L at all (24-70L my friend was using with us that time), i am not sure which one i used more. and sometimes i switch those 2 lenses between those 2 bodies, end up with about 7-8GB maybe

Seriously....I have a question.
Aside from the convenience of zoom and price, how is this lense compared to 85mm 1.8 IQ wise?
I really don't want both. (that was a lie....)

Hehe, as the owner of both, the IQ of both lenses is very high. Can I tell the difference between them? No, but then I don't pixel peep. The big differentiator for me, is for portraits. I stop down the 85mm to f/2.2 (or f/2.8 for groups), and the shots have a magical quality about them. Ok, now I understand why people may say the 24-70 has better bokeh than the 24-105. The 85mm is just stunning.
Thinking about it more, think about using your 135mm (hopefully getting it for my bday this summer :D) and comparing it with your 70-200. The 70-200 is a superb lens, but the 135. . . it's right up there! Actually, do you see the 85 getting much use?

I agree that the bokeh is underrated. Probably the result of unfair comparisons between the 24-105L at f4 and the 24-70L at f2.8.

yes man, 6MP and 8MP mostly for printing sizes than IQ.
I got great results with my XT with 24-70 in the past, so don't worry, i am sure you will have great results using 24-105 on your 10D.

I would love to see Canon, and even maybe B&H reward Pekka someday with some "payback". I'd be willing to bet that as a direct result of this forum over the past few years, they have each made millions in profit. Toss him a couple of MkIII's or maybe one of the ultra-rare 1200mm Ls. He deserves it.

One question, what's going to be more important when trying to bag images like this:
http://www.pbase.com/smith_xt/image/67437235/original.jpg
Someone posted this earlier in the thread. It's superb.
Is this more down to the lens than the body?
Reason I ask, the majority of the shots in this thread are taken with a 30D, but I'm a little concerned I might be a little disappointed with the lens on my 350D. I do plan on upgrading my body in the future, but I want to get my glass sorted first.
Thoughts?

I am sure many people here will tell you that body will not do much improvement for shots, but lens can, and all will tell you that the monkey behind the camera is who making the shots, so i can't comment or answer your question.

Well thats my work before I got better in the post processing, so I'll take it as a compliment and thanks.
The 350D/XT is quite capable of results such as this with the 24-105. The lens focuses super fast thanks to the USM motor. I had a Sigma 18-125mm that was awful speed wise trying capture shots like this.

Hi everyone,
This is my first ever post here and am still quite a photography noob but I decided to pick up the 24-105L this past weekend over the 24-70 because I wanted the extra reach and the IS. I went to the St. Patrick's Day parade and boy was a I glad I had this on, the extra reach was definitely needed as I had to take shots from the sidelines. Anyway, here's a few sample pics

Not really. I had an early version that had the "heavenly rays" problem... but it took a few months to notice it. You had to be positioned in relation to the sun (or light source) in a very specific way (angle).
Other than that, I don't notice any more flare than any other lens... in fact I even have a UV protector on it.

I had a post-recall version that had some flare issues. I took it to Canon and they replaced it with a new lens. While it doesn't have the abnormal flare problem that the first lens had, flare tolerance with this lens is not very good in my opinion...

For one thing, the hood is designed for 24mm. Not 105mm, not even 25mm. And that's on full frame. On a crop camera it's even less effective.

Thanks, I'm asking because I'm considering the 24-70 and the 24-105 but I've heard a lot about lens flare with the latter of the two. I was leaning towards the 24-105 but if lens flare is a big problem, especially on a crop camera, then I'll probably be better off with the other lens and just sacrifice the longer range for less lens flare and one stop faster. Thanks again.

You're totally right. Some people make a hobby out of finding 'defects' and whine about 'em. You can fault optical equipment, including each and every lens on the market, even your holy Canon L primes.
No sane person would choose the 24-70 over the 24-105 or vice versa because of differences in the quality of bokeh.
Don't worry too much. Don't shoot too many brick walls. You can have a life even if your lens flares when pointed directly into the sun. Measure with your eyes and brain. Don't waste your life shooting test charts in your basement.

A photograph of the bathing boxes at Dendy Street Beach, Brighton, Australia.
The darkened top right-hand corner is the result of the use of a graduated ND filter, not vignetting per se.
Shot in RAW and converted to JPEG in Canon's DPP. No additional processing applied other than resizing:

hey guys just curious, what filter are you all using for the 24-105 F/4L IS? esp with the 5D? i've yet to get one (for protection) and there're so many different brands/models/thickness types to choose from (Canon/B+H/Hoya, regular/thin etc). any vignetting problems? thanks!

Yeah, I know what you mean.
The 70-200 f4IS is indeed a RAZOR sharp lens. I don't think the 24-105L is quite that sharp unless you really nail it. (At least my copy...)
But you know what? The 24-105L keeps on surprising me with not only its versatility but IQ. The IQ is still very, very good in my book.
I was using it indoors with my 580EX flash and the results are simply outstanding!

yup, i agree it just can't compare with the 70-200, but all of you guys made some truly stunning pics! i was contemplating bringing my 24-105 for recaliberation but the strange thg is that it performs very well indoors (in the right lighting) but details just seem to 'smudge' when shooting in sunny outdoors. but you guys showed me what its truly capable of! perhaps may hv to send mine for a check at Canon.

Hey all,
Great thread this one...as it covers one of the two lenses I own, I thought I would post a few pics.
Be gentle...this is my first digital camera...and my first SLR. I havent owned a camera since the old wind-to-the-next-shot type cameras about 15 years ago!
I have only been taking photos for 2 weeks now. I still have a lot to learn!
I will post 8 over several posts.

Note: The ant shot is a bit of a cheat - obviously it was made using a macro extension tube with my 24-105mm. Its a tiny ant (1 or 2 mm long or so), not a big bullant.
The snake shot amazed me - shot in very low light with no flash.
