Never planned to use this as a portrait lens. That all changed recently when I photographed sisters, ages 1 and 3. They were all over the place, so had to ditch the fixed focal length lenses and go with this zoom. Was impressed with the performance:

as a new owner, my initial impression is that this is one great lens and the IQ creates an image very accurately. These two shots are like I'm looking at them live. Color and contrast are better than expected.

I have a pic request from you guys!
Can anyone post pics of what 105mm on FF at f/4 looks like for a waist up portrait? Looking specifically what the bokeh and dof are like.. considering using this as a portrait zoom. The 24-70L seems too short for portraits even though its faster.

I haven't been able to really get out and shoot much since I got my 1D3 last week. I was playing around in the office using ISO 3200 and fill flash with my 430EX. Noise reduction set to Color 25 in LR3. I'm still trying to get used to this camera's awesomeness :) Anyway, below is my mini Beagle looking pretty. 1D3 at 3200 ISO with 24-105 f4L IS at f4 and 84mm.

I looked at hundreds of threads in different forums about the 27-70mm and the 24-105mm..
Some great shots with both lenses..
The reach and the all round ability of the 24-105mm is unquestionable, over the 27-70mm's sharpness and f2.8..
There's been MANY times in the past, for a great shot, where i was stuck, and there just NOT enough natural light for a f4.0 lens, with IS or not..
Maybe, i am saying this, because i am still undecided and confused...
The reason for all these 'confused' ones may be, that what we really want from Canon is a :
Canon EF 24-105mm f.2.8 L IS USM MII...
WOW! That would be some lens...

I have the 24-70 2.8 and I love it, my works wonders but... I thought about this the other night, it isn't a very sensible decision between this one and the 24-105!? Unless you're a gear snob or just a idiot (like me) you're going for the 2.8 because hell, it's 2.8... That's awesome! But on the other hand the 24-105 gives you more reach, IS and be honest, constant aperture of f/4 still isn't bad!? I can't help myself but if I were able to think clear the 24-105 would be the obvious choice!

It's a choice you have to make for yourself, do you really need 2.8? That's about the only advantage I think of. IQ wise I don't think one is much better than the other. It's heavier, has less reach and no IS. If f/4 is too slow, then f/2.8 probably can't save you either.

In a normal situation, in a town, village, near windows, there would be enough natural light... Or you would have time to pop a flash on..
I have seen photojournalistic pictures, from war zones or refugee camps, where you are NOT allowed flash, only natural light.. Or night time operations, where even an f.2.8 would struggle...
One great example was, sorry i don't have the link at hand.. This photographer took a shot in a refugee camp in Somalia, i think, by just opening a tiny flap from outside the tent (like an indian teepee), just pointed his lens in, without disturbing the patient inside, it was a shot of an ill woman lying in bed and the only shaft of light coming through was from the flap he opened.. and the light lit her face..
Stunning shot... 24-105mm would have been useless in that situation and even the 24-40mm..
Hate to think, he might have used an M9 and a Leica f1.8 prime...
That's why those lenses cost as much as they do...

My first post with this lens, a little guy who was on my bed last night. He was rather resistant to moving, so he became a model. Sadly, when I went to evict him in earnest, I found he had long since passed.
This was shot on a 5D2 with a Kenko 2x TC at minimum focus distance (manual focus with focus-confirmation. I used an Alien Bees ABR800 ring light to get the brightness for the shot:
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/6690/newburyportmacro0027.jpg
This was JUST barely resized down from a 100% crop - the original crop was 1159 on the long edge to the 800 on this image. I did apply sharpening, but as anybody who's tried to sharpen a blurry image before knows, it just calls attention to a lack of sharpness. I still intend to pick up some extension tubes, but this does a fantastic job given the compromises a 2x TC puts on a lens, especially one like this!

I don't see the big debate between f4.0 and f2.8. There really isn't that much difference, and as high-ISO capabilities of cameras keep rising that difference becomes moot. There's virtually nothing I can do with my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 that I can't also do as well with my 24-105 f4.0. And when it comes to just sticking a camera through a hole in a tent, that's very hit and miss. I've taken shots (a bit) like that in the past with my Minox 35ML, as well as many shots in tombs etc, always without flash. It usually comes down to technique.
I recently bought the 28-75 for a particular project, but to be honest it's more useful for its restricted depth of field than for its light-gathering properties. My walk-around lens on my FF camera will continue to be my 24-105, just as the walk-around lens on my crop camera will remain the 15-85. Even though that lens isn't particularly fast, AND has a variable f-number. I find it very easy to get good shots with it even in low light, just as I do with the 24-105.

My 24-105mm f/4L came with my 5D Mark II. Initially, I hardly ever used the lens and contemplated selling it to fund a 24-70mm f/2.8L. Recently, however, I have used the 24-105 frequently and am warming up to it. I no longer plan to sell it. I'm still up in the air on whether or not I should add the 24-70mm f/2.8L to my collection.

I have recently discovered the 24-105 is my favorite lens for video on my 7D. I only shoot short clips of the kids, but the IS and range are invaluable, and you can turn the shutter speed down for video and use it in a wider range of lighting conditions. I also like the 24-105 for shooting stills of the kids playing in the yard. The 70-200 is a bit long for my yard but it's nice to have a zoom. I'm still very happy to have this lens in my bag.

I primarily use my 24-105 on my FF body, but recently I've started using it on my crop body and I really like it. It has no wide end of course, but at the long end it gives FFE 168 which is very useful.

Okay, I will admit, I was REALLY skeptical about having IS in a 24mm focal length, but here's an image I took yesterday with a 1 second (!!!) exposure, handheld. I was sitting on a rock with my elbows braced against my knees, but still, there's NO way I could have gotten this without IS or a tripod. The second is a 50% crop. I thought 100% was asking a bit much, but this should print up very well at 8x10, and probably look decent at 17x12 if I wanted to:

Congrats to the IS and the photographer... Great picture..
Checked it at 300%, can't see any obvious shake..
Careful there's some vignetting coming in from the top left and right corners..
Strange, as i presuming you shot this with an FF camera, looking at your gear..
You could also improve it a lot with some PP work, levels, contrast and some popping colours..

Thanks for the complements! In the 100% crop, it's not perfectly sharp, but as I said, it'll print up nicely.
The vignetting is from the circular polarizer I was using. It's odd in that it only shows up when the light angle is just right. I'll invest in a good thin polarizer one of these days, but if I print 8x10 (or any 4x5 equivalent,) it'll be gone from the shot anyway.
And absolutely, it needs some lovin' to make it 100%, but I'm focused on my print output these days, so I'll target for that when I do my next run.
And yes, this was shot on the 5D2. I really did agonize over this lens-buying decision. The 24-105 is not one of those lenses that gets the sentimental adoration that even the Sigma 50 and 85 1.4s do. And having shot with nothing slower than f/2.8 since starting in the DSLR world about two and a half years ago, I was VERY nervous about being limited to f/4. Some people even suggest that there's some copy variation with this particular design, to the point that they suspect sharpness issues. But I'd shot with the Sigma 24-60 in the past on my 1D3 and I really didn't feel that the 24-70 would give a broad enough range of focal lengths to be able to leave the 70-200 behind.
Having spent a week or so with it now, I know that my copy comfortably out-resolves my 5D2, and it is at the very worst my 2nd-sharpest lens to the 300 2.8, but I'd probably call it a tie. The contrast and color are excellent, it does a beautiful job with people, and it's light and compact enough to hang off of one wrist and not worry about it.
Just as I feel that the 16-35II is the best walk-around lens on the APS-H crop bodies, I think the 24-105 is nearly the ultimate all-purpose lens on the 5D2. And honestly, shots like that beach shot or the earlier macro shot I did are unexpected surprises for me with this lens.
The true irony in all of this is that I was originally in the pre-order for the 5D2 kit, and now it looks like that will be my primary rig. Well, it only took 30 months to come full-circle! :-)

I think that's simply because it has been included with some bodies as a "kit" lens, and in some people's minds that makes it not really worthy, and its use a sign that the photographer isn't discriminating. But when I bought my 5D this lens wasn't packaged with it in a kit and I made a positive decision to buy it. I was a bit concerned about its performance at one point, but I was merely being paranoid and blaming my poor technique on the lens. I now think it's a superb lens.
Interestingly I don't regard the 16-35 as the "natural" lens for a crop body. For me that's the 15-85, another superb and under-rated lens (probably just because it doesn't sport a red ring).

SOOC, That's, Straight-Out-Of the Can is it?? :p
I had to repost that picture again, proof that the IS works fine even after a can of beer (or maybe two)..
I agree that the 24-105mm suffers, because of being 'given away' as a kit lens... But my doubts were, because it was an f4 and it had a protruding zoom, the inner body extending when zoomed.. I swore ages ago, that i would never buy a lens that's less than f2.8.. This where the 24-70mm jumps in, with f2.8 and a considerable reputation amongst Landscape shooters, who don't usually need a Walkabout lens.. and the reach..
I used the Tamron 28-75mm for 4 years on a 20D body and a Full Frame... Superb lens optically, but again with extending zoom and a plasticky body, making it feel more flimsy somehow..
To me, 16-35mm f2.8 MII feels like a combination made-in-heaven on a full frame body... Some who own it would swear, that's one of Canon's sharpest lenses.. Even better than the 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM... I couldn't take any crap shots with lens and i tried hard, even after few beers.. I find the distortion on it is part of the fun..
I can understand though, someone who owns a cropped body, would feel the same about the 15-85mm, which seems to get 9/10 in all the reviews i have seen.. Yes i think there's a snobbish value with the L lenses..
I also think there's too much emphasis on 'Sharpness' these days, maybe we are being spoilt by pin-sharp lenses.. If you look at the best pictures in the history of photography, most of them were out-of-focus, but they had "Content'..
I hope i am not opening another can-of-worms here..

Hey guys, just a painful story to tell:
About a month and a half ago, before I left France to return home, I picked up a Zeiss 35-70 and decided to sell my 24-105 (with which I had frankly never been that happy...I don't feel right with an all-purpose zoom anymore). I got it pretty cheap, as it suffered from the traditional serious zoom creep and had a cracked focus window, so I put it on the market for 500€, or a bit over $700 (around $50 less than I paid). I was very honest in the ad, and immediately had a bunch of people jumping at it given that $700 is a ridiculously low price in Europe.
So I finally decided on this guy who seemed very nice (he teaches at a school very near to another school at which I once taught), and who was willing to drive 2.5 hours (and pay cash) to me just to get the lens. So he shows up with his girlfriend in tow, we sit and talk for about an hour about photography, and we both leave thrilled at the whole deal. He gets a huge bargain, and I don't have to stick the 24-105 in my bag for the plane home! I even offered to ship him a replacement for the cracked focus window when I got home (they cost around $10).
So weeks go by, I arrive home, and I get an e-mail from him. Apparently the zoom creep bothered him more than he'd though, so he tried to repair the lens himself. He of course broke off a piece (from his description, one of the big contact ribbons) and rendered it useless. He just sent it off to Canon, where they'll repair it "for a large price." That e-mail made me physically sad!
Moral of the story: lens repair is for people who know what they're doing!

Personal issues aside ... You should buy both and then the 16-35mm f.2.8 MII..
Then you can upgrade to Full Frame with your Holy Trinity already covered.. And use the 7D as a secondary camera..

Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty good lens :p. Best travel lens ever when paired with the 5D. From a recent trip to the Canadian east coast.
