Well, it started as a still image and I just started to play with it using motion blur and radial blur on certain selections. Let me tell you, making the wheels spin (and look half-way decent) when the wheels are not directly facing the camera is tough. ;)

Despite Bond_Savingsbond and mondayshift's enthusiasm the answer really is "It depends".

Just because it is an "L" doesn't necessarily mean it is great optically. There are "L" lenses that are great optically. But there are also dogs. There are also non-L lenses that are great optically.

The main thing about an "L" lens is the build quality. They are meant to stand up to the abuse of daily professional pounding.

So the answer is to determine what focal length lens you need to do what you want to do. Then see if an "L" will fill that need or if some other lens will do it better.

Hehe, well for me I went from the Canon 17-55 f2.8 to the 24-105L and I just love it. There have been many times where I said to myself "I wish I had that extra reach". I don't know how well the 24-105 will do on a cropped camera but on a FF it's a joy to use :) I guess when it comes down to it, it will be based on shooting style and needs. I needed something that is versatile and gives amazing IQ.
It's probably just me but I didn't like the IQ my 17-55 was giving when I had it attatched to my T1I, even with an off camera flash (just something to add for the 17-55 vs 24-105L threads out there).

Having just flown from Belize to Boston, I took my 5D and 24-105 out to be a real tourist. Only to find the 24-105 has somehow self-destructed, and the AF now simply hunts - even when I'm not touching the shutter button. Goodness knows what Dr. Canon will find when he examines it.

travelling to England next year, thinking of getting this lens for my 5DII, hoping to travel light so dont want to take any more than two lenses, perhaps just this lens and my 50 F1.4 for any lowlight stuff. still torn between 24-105 and 24-70. Also wondering if 24 will be wide enough for photographing castles etc.

Looking at those I would instantly say that you need a little faster shutter speed, what you are thinking is lack of sharpness could well be camera shake, if these were taken handheld

I was under the impression that 1/60 was the minimum shutter speed.:o

So the idea is to increase the shutter speed to something over 1/200? Those were handheld and had the IS running...

Do you have Photoshop? If so, duplicate the layer and try a high pass filter set to about 20 pixels on the top layer. Set the layer to Soft Light. Then merge the layers.

The pics look fairly sharp to me, although I don't have the RAW files to do any serious pixel peeping.

High Pass filter.

Rule of thumb is (1/focal length) * crop factor = shutter speed. IS gives you 2 stops.

Yeah, I'm thinking the focus point was the wood just past the handle. Might be a bit of camera shake in there as well.

And crop factor does not affect the 1/focal length rule. The image size on the sensor is exactly the same regardless of the camera model. In other words the image of just the door handle will be the same size on the sensor in a 60D as it will on a 1Ds. It's the sensor field of view that's different. The 1Ds will have more of the scene hitting its sensor because the sensor is bigger. Think of cutting chocolate chip cookie dough. One cookie cutter is 2 inches wide and the other is 3 inches wide. The chocolate chip in the middle is exactly the same size in both resulting cookies. It's just that the bigger cookie cutter results in a cookie with more dough (bigger cookie). It doesn't change the size of the chocolate chip, though. But if you look at the smaller cookie with a magnifying glass that made it the same size as the bigger cookie, the chocolate chip would appear bigger. That's the crop factor at work.

But focal length is focal length and the rule remains the same.

That's a nice cookie story. There are just two major problems with it:

1. You forgot about physics and a wee bit math...
Let's assume on average that while holding the camera as still as you can, the camera swings around let's say, 0.8 degree per second.

For a 100mm lens, a 0.8 degree swing will move the image through about 1.6 mm, which will cause considerable blurring. If you want no significant blurring, you'd want to hold image motion down to something like 16 microns for an 35mm frame (16 microns is about 1/2 the value of the circle of confusion and is equal to 16/1000mm). Since the image moves though 16 microns in 1/100s, you'd want to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/100s or faster.

However a Canon APS-C sensor is 1.6x smaller, so instead of allowing the image to move by 16 microns, we can only allow it to move by 10 microns.
Since we can only allow 10 microns of image movement, we now need to use a shutter speed of 1/160s rather than 1/100s.
So smaller formats need faster shutter speeds if we want equally sharp photos / prints of the same size.
You can also say that the effective focal length of a 100mm lens is 160mm on an APS-C sensor...

2. I am a chocoholic and would eat all you chocolate chip cookies way before you get a chance to snap a picture... :D

Cheers.

I don't want to cause too much thread drift here, and I agree with your math (and thought you'd say that), but such blur would only be marginally noticeable at a major crop level. The image of the chocolate chip on both sensors is exactly the same. It's only when you blow the image up that you'll notice blur, and it will be the same "blur" on both sensors. Your point is that to get the same size chocolate chip on the resulting images from both sensors, that the APS-C image would need to be blown up by 1.6 more, and hence the blur would be even more noticeable. That is true, but it's slicing the issue pretty thin and you'd have to be doing a huge crop. Most folks don't crop to that extent. But to say that a 1/100 sec shot on a 1.6 camera using a 100mm lens is too slow is exaggerating a bit. As a general rule of thumb, the 1/focal length rule still stands unless you're getting into major zooms like 200mm and up. And then you'll probably have IS anyway.

And as a general rule of thumb I don't abide by most general rules of thumb. :) But some people live by them and I'd hate to instill in some new photog's head that he/she is not going to get a good shot with a 100mm lens at less than 1/160 sec on an APS-C camera. The 1/focal length rule works in the vast majority of situations. (Just MHO, of course. YMMV)

And stop eating my cookies. :p

Well, I just sold my 24-105 and my 24-70 arrives tomorrow. Am I going to regret it? :-)
My 24-105 was really sharp I just hope the new lens can match it.
There are two reasons I got the 24-70. Firstly, since buying the 24-105, I have also now bought the 70-200 2.8 IS Mk2 and it is more straight forward having the 24 -70 L matched with that lens.
Secondly, I could do with 2.8 for a lot of my studio stuff so it makes sense to get the 24-70.
One thing is for sure though. The 24-105 is a fantastic lens. I would recommend it to anyone. Was sad to let it go.Really enjoyed looking at everyones shots in here :-)
All the very best.

With those slow shutter speeds you should consider using a tripod especially if you're shooting at a strange angle. Yours appear to be shooting up at the statue which makes it difficult to hand hold at 1/25 and slower shutter speeds. At least for me it is hard to keep steady.

Agree 100%; as this was a wine festival, I figured I would stand out enough with a camera! Mind you there was a film crew there, using a fancy body carrying system, with a Canon dSLR taking the videos, so I guess I would not have been that conspicuous. Having a glass or three of wine may or may not make the hands steadier...:-0
I plan on going back to take some more pictures using a tripod, and no wine...

5Dmk2..Thanks...The picture of Comerica Park, I can't remember the f/stop but I'm almost sure it was f/4, so I could get the fastest shutter speed hand held...I tried to find the EXIF data and couldn't. All I remember is the ISO and lens.

This is from the first time (this week) I ever photographed a model. And only the 2nd time I ever really "shot a person" so to speak in any continual duration. In other words, I shoot trees, or trees with little people, typically. This is the Vista House in the Columbia River Gorge in the evening. Although I like the photo a lot and better than expected, yet completely different from what I anticipated for mood. It's almost dramatic looking. Sunlight was a dimmed burning orange ball sunset tinted by smoke from a forest fire to the east.

^^^ I like the mood the sun created for you, great capture. It is a shame someone put a security camera on that beautiful building in plain sight.

LOL

Yeah ... caught that last night when I opened the file. Didn't really pay much attention when taking the pic. It was a race against the sun dropping. It was the lit face though. I'm guessing that if I cut and copy bricks and texture from the rest of the building, it may photoshop-away reasonably. Could be a good practice session with photo editing.

Edit ...

Okay ... tried a rough Photoshop version ...

Referring to the following reply, I have yet to get the CS5, but eventually. Have Photoshop Elements presently.

I tried it, content aware fill in CS5 clears that up in like 10 secs.

Thank you. Sometimes if you sit in one place long enough, something worthy of a photo may come along. That shot took enormous patience, several cold drinks, and most of the afternoon. ;)

Took this one hand-held, standing on the top of an orchard ladder, with my knees against the very top of it. I can't imagine a practical tripod option for that scenerio.

BTW - if anyone knows what plant this is, the name escapes me. It's not a common plant here. The blossoms (yellow) are not near the camera as an illusion, but are to the right of her head and above.
