No your spot on, I actually dont like the 24-105L on a 1.6x body, its not a very nice focal length as the 1.6x crop shifts the focal length too far to the telephoto end & I found AF accuracy wasnt quite as good along with general IQ, I wasnt impressed at all.
However.... on the 5D its a completely different story, bang on AF, superb sharpness & overall IQ & a very nice focal range.

The lens can make a good portrait lens on a 1.6X crop body, depending on shooting preferences. As a backup photographer (photographing with another two) at a non-commissioned wedding shoot, the focal length range was excellent, allowing close-up, more intimate portraits of the bride and groom. An example is the B&W photo of the bride in veil posted above.
For wider shots, and table shots it was terrible of course and next to useless. But I agreed with my buddies that they would cover those segments of the wedding. :D

Hi all, first post. Thought this would be the best place to discuss the 24-105L. I traded in my 28-135 IS as I it had a fair amount of red fringing at certain focal lengths and also was soft at f22 (nice and sharp at f16 and below). It was a great lens but those two little things really bugged me, I wanted a lens with no fringing, and that was sharp at f22 for landscape work. I thought the best lens to replace it with, as I have already got a 100-400 L zoom, would be the 24-105L. After some tests today shooting landscapes at the 24mm end with a 5D, I can see it too is very soft at f22, reasonable at f16 but pin sharp from f11 down, For the test I focused on a distant point and then turned auto focus off, as well as the IS, as it was on a tripod. I did 6 frames, 1 each at at f4/5.6/8/11/16/22 focused at infinity, then same again 20ft and also 10ft. One thing I notice is that when focusing on infinity the lens marker was actually quite a way past the infinity mark....it was fairly cold today though, but I wouldn't expect that much of a difference in the lens reading. So I focused on the ground in front of the tripod which was 3ft away, and the lens read off just over 1.5 metres. Is my lens not all it should be, does anyone else have a similar problem, in particular does anyone have a lens that is as sharp at f22 as it is at f11?
cheers Dave

Oh, and I meant to add that it also has a fair amount of red fringing too, almost as much as the non L series 28-135mm. The 24-105 is twice the price of a 28-135, another £300 in fact, but I can't see £300 worth of improvement which prove that the 28-135 is a great lens for the money:confused:

The reason why the lens turned in a soft performance was because of diffraction. This is the phenomenon that causes the performance of a lens to take a hit at very small apertures. It's normal in all lenses and systems, just that different lenses/ systems hit diffraction at different aperture settings. According to the tests I've read, the sharpness of the lens at 24mm should peak between f/5.6-8, and performance declines steadily past that. At the 105mm end things improve steadily as you stop down till f/8. At smaller apertures I presume you'd see the same thing.
Don't get all tied up with the thought of needing f/22 for complete sharpness in a landscape scene. At f/8 there will already be plenty of depth of field at 24mm, assuming you're focusing at normal distances and not closeup.

Thanks for the comments people seems that i have def got a good copy and yes it was taken with a 24-105 lol.
I was a little worried that the highish F4 stop would not be low enough but it gives a beautiful bokeh and the IS helps with the light isues.
I never realised how effective the flash could be in day light. Works great with difuser.
I have learnt so much since i have started browsing on this site.

I ended up selling my 70-200 F4 because I rarely used it. Reaching 105 was almost always enough for me and swapping to gain 200 was rarely worth it.
Now I'm considering swapping the 24-105 for the 24-70 once I can afford the 70-200 2.8 IS. I'm thinking with my kids growing up the 70-200 2.8 IS will be a killer sports lens and portrait lens... and the 24-70 would be the ultimate companion.
All that being said, I think if I did sell off my 24-105 I'd really miss it. It's a fantastic "leave on the body" lens.

I see you have a Sigma 17-70mm. I don't have anything wider than 24mm on my 40D and find that I don't shoot at 24mm that often either, but quite a bit at 105mm. I'd be interested in knowing if you miss the 17-24 when you switch!

I see you have a Sigma 17-70mm. I don't have anything wider than 24mm on my 40D and find that I don't shoot at 24mm that often either, but quite a bit at 105mm. I'd be interested in knowing if you miss the 17-24 when you switch!
Yes i'll keep you updated. If it is a problem i'll buy myself a Sigma 10-20 or a Canon 10-22 to compliment the 24-105mm.

Received this lens today after selling my 17-70 and I must say I love it and glad I sold the Sigma. IS is amazing. Don't get me wrong the 17-70 was a sharp lens but prefer the L quality. I'm not too fussed about it not being wide enough as its an excuse to buy a Sigma 10-20.;)

Im torn between buying the 24-105 or the 17-55 IS to go with my 70-200 f/4 IS..they are both the same price.......decisions decisions....
I'm pondering that decision also, except that I don't own the 70-200. I don't have any hands on experience with any of them, but judging by the comments, photos and reviews I've been perusing for hours and hours over the last couple weeks, it seems to me that generally speaking, the Canon 70-200 takes the sharpest images, the 17-55 is almost as sharp, and the 24-105 is slightly less sharp than the other two. Am I correct?
Of course there are other considerations to be weighed in the balance, such as speed/low light ability, focal length range (if you want it for an all-around walk-about like I do), and the 17-55's (supposed) dust inhaling tendencies, etc.
Why didn't someone warn me about all these hard decisions I'd have to make before I bought my DSLR?

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS is sharp, no doubt, but I can't say it's sharper than the 24-105 f/4 L IS or even the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS. Supposedly the 70-200 f/4 L non-IS is the sharpest lens of the bunch, but I haven't used it so can't comment on the veracity of the rumor. :) But, I do have the 24-105, the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, and the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, and I shot with th 70-200 f/2.8 L non-IS for years. If there are any differences in sharpness, it's by the thinnest margins.

I don't have the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS to compare against, but this is plenty sharp enough for me. First is the "full" shot. Second is a 100% center crop (600x600 pixels - from the exact center of the first image)
Lighting was sub-par, so that only further serves to prove the point!

That depends, but strictly speaking, f/4 is kind of slow.... but then again, f/2.8 is only 1-stop faster, and I consider f/2.8 even too slow. If you want reliable indoor shots, you need 1. Flash, or 2. Faster (50/1.4, 30L/1.4, 85/1.8 are examples) lens.
I chose the first route. My 24-105mm is great with a 580EX II!

As djeuch said. Its probably not the fastest but with a good flash and a higher ISO it should work fine. My 24-105mm and 430EX work fine indoors.

I here you! Well, if you do any low-light work the 24-70L will be hard to top (and the better back ground blur for close-ups). I love my 24-105L and the IS takes care of my shots even with low light...but I don't shoot low-light action. Plus, depending on your crop factor the 24=~38MM and 105=~168MM which is pretty good range for a walk-around lens.
Good luck!

Your 5D would enjoy a combination of the 16-35 and the 24-105. These are great on this camera for walk-around and landscapes!

Thank you! It was funny as I snapped off hundreds of shots of other views at that time but only ONE of that particular scene... and of course that one lonely frame was the winner of the morning. Looks like an elephant on the mountain to me.
Regarding the lens, this is my first IS lens and this was my first time messing with it. I found it very helpful as, especially in the morning and at dusk, we have low levels of natural light when it is overcast in the PNW. If I got 3 stops of hand holding ability out of it, it certainly was more useful than the 2.8 competitor Canon zoom. Everything was at ISO 100 and low shutter speeds (top one, 1/80 sec and stopped down one to 5.6) but still crisp and clean. When I walk around in the morning I'm usually with the dog so a tripod is out of the question.
The IS gets a big thumbs up from me. If you don't need to stop action and just want to use lower ISOs and slower shutters, this is a good solution instead of the 2.8.

When you do long IS handhelds like this, do you fire off a burst to get a sharp one or do you go slowly, one at a time? Were there rejects from the long shutters?

see it's shots like that that make me wonder about this over my 24-70mm
With that setup, I would have been at 1/10th and f/2.8... Shallower DOF where you want as much as you can get and 1/10th would be blurry without the IS...
That shot wouldn't be possible with my setup, and how much would I miss f/2.8....
Nice.

I'll answer for me with my 300mm... I can shoot it down to 1/30th EASILY and 1/15th with enough keepers I won't avoid that speed as needed... Also bear in mind the 24-105 has a newer IS worth more stops... I just shoot slow and steady. Good form (tucked shoulders, stance etc) will get you sharp shots at 24mm and 1/5th easily. That's much more stable than my 300mm because of the angle and the newer IS... So keep steady and shoot normally.
Also when/if you get an IS lens, I suggest you test shoot it a bunch at slow speeds both as stable as you can be and just snap happy... Test out what works at what FLs so you know before you shoot. That way you'll know when you really have to pay attention, and when you can just fire away.

I chose the 24-105 for just those reasons. I don't shoot action where I need to freeze movement... on the contrary, I like to do ambient light, freeze the background and have the people with motion blur. The IS is perfect for that.
jacobsen1
13th of February 2008 (Wed), 12:18
That's my problem.
I mainly shoot travel/landscape where IS would help when not using a tripod... But I do use my tripod as much as possible, but there are still times I don't... Beyond that though I shoot sports and people enough that I use the f/2.8 for shutter speeds or background blur... Would f/4 be enough for me in these situations? That's the issue. 75% of the time the f4 IS is a smarter option, but a tripod is better still IF I'll use it... that other 25% I wonder if the f4 would ruin the shot or not. It's only 1 stop... But if you're already at max ISO where does that live you.
And so it goes in my head.
TheHoff
13th of February 2008 (Wed), 12:22
Right. If I had to shoot sports (again!) I would have some fast primes to complement the travel zoom. I'm sure you know, some of the non-L mid ranges like 50 / 85 / 100 are quite good and affordable... and much faster than 2.8. If you really need mid-range focal lengths and speed for sports, 2.8 is a compromise.
Also when/if you get an IS lens, I suggest you test shoot it a bunch at slow speeds both as stable as you can be and just snap happy... Test out what works at what FLs so you know before you shoot. That way you'll know when you really have to pay attention, and when you can just fire away.
I've only had the IS lens out a few times now, and it is my first, so thanks for the advice on holding it. I've done pretty well with it so far using good form and also firing off a few shots at a time. There always seems to be one that is sharper than the rest with the low shutterspeeds, even with IS.
