I'm in the market for a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM vs Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. During the past year a was wondering many of the photos of this thread and for the other lens and still not reaching a desition. My main concern is that I love sharpen and shooting in low light condition mostly pleople. The brick don't have IS but 2.8 aperture instead the 24-105 have IS and a better reach. I noticy(I dont if is it me) but I felt the 24-105 is more sharp in mostly any situation vis a vis the brick. Can anybody have comment, input or hint? Thanks for read!!!:)

I sold my "brick" for this lens because of IS. I just wasn't getting consistant good sharp shots with the "brick" because of the type shooting I do. I have been very pleased with the 24-105. Plus it seems a lot lighter :)

You're right. This lens is extremely sharp in Low light situations and with the power of the 5D Mark II makes it that much more of a great lens. My only complaint is it's f4 limitations but since I use it for weddings it doesn't really matter. If I need to I usually switch to my 50mm 1.4 and take my shallow DOF shots that way.

Both lenses are good in their own way. Yes, there are times when I'll go for a faster lens. People/activity in low light is in fact an example -- IS will help you with steadiness, but won't freeze subject motion. I've used the 24-70 at f/2.8 with good results with that type of scene (and occasionally faster primes).
But for me more typical is a good "walkaround" scenario -- something that does good work hand-held in decent light. I've found that the 24-105 is great for that. I've found that f/4 is nearly always wide enough (more often I shoot at f/5.6) and the IS is great for that type of shooting. Plus, it has the "reach" advantage.
And, as was mentioned, it's lighter than the 24-70.
So, for a general purpose lens, I do tend to prefer the 24-105. I've used the 24-70 for that type of shooting as well, but I did quickly develop a fondness for the 24-105 back when I got it as the "kit" lens for the 5D!

Hello, I haven't used the 24-70 myself but I can tell you this, the 24-105 works really well in low lighting situations. I myself use a 5D mkII and I try my best to keep my ISO in the 800-1600 range of indoor low lighting. Before I purchased this lens I owned a 17-55 2.8 used on my Ti1 and I honestly did not like it (low light shots with this lens can be found on the last page of my flickr). Go for the 25-105, you will not regret it. Also it can do Macro.
Edit: on my CAMTOGRAPHY FB page if you look for 'Kinesis: Edmonton Choreographers Ball', most of those pictures were taken with the 24-105 under very low lighting conditions.

Man ... it's like a photographers fort knox.
Guess it's like great wine or whiskey ... these old relics often get better with age. If only there was a way to cap the bottle to preserve them longer.

Cheers,
I love this, great eye to get the sunspot through the fencepost!
Thinking of gettting one, maybe tomorrow for my 60d. £650 and will sell the tamron 28-75.
Looks V good, anyone think I shouldnt?
Go for it. This lens lives on my 60D at least 90% of the time and goes from city walk-around lens to country landscapes so easily. It's my second favorite lens only because my 8mm fisheye is so much fun.

i've really only used this lens on the 5D2. as i've sold my 60D just after i got the 24-105. but the reason i got the 60D was some of the images i saw when it was pared with the 24-105. i would recommend this lens period. although i did prefer my EF-S 17-55 on the 60D. in the end when i decide to let go of my 60D i actually traded my 17-55 for the 24-105 i have now. but i'm afraid these might be my last days with the 24-105 i'm thinking of going the all prime route and selling my 24-105.
the 24-105 is not just good, a great lens. :D

I took these a couple of weeks ago, I thought I would force myself to use the lens, I have been hooked on primes lately and wouldn't you know it after a couple of shots I got the Error 001 code sensor cleaning which did not clear after I cleaned the sensor. Anyway its at canon right now getting worked on.

Scheduled a shoot today and didn't want the weather to terminate it. So while out there with occasional drizzle and rain, I decided to put my trust in the 24-105mm.
I love my 50mm and would have preferred it for many shots, but I was certain it would get finicky with rain drops during auto focus. So I said "let's get old faithful" out of the bag and make this day work - lol
The impression I get from the 24-105mm is ...
It's like the lens equivalent of getting a Jeep and Ferrari in one vehicle.

When I think precision and high perfomance technically, I think Ferrari.
Jeep ... I think it's going to get me where I want to go where some other vehicles may not do the job at that moment.
With the 24-105, I know I've got the quality, and feel it's one of the best lenses when something is needed to get me through some situations.

Here's another from this week. We plunged ahead through rain that hit us that morning.

ZAVCOM ... if you read this, let me know what the awesome flower was earlier. Magnolia came to mind, the the center twist is different, and I know of no yellow center varieties.
Sorry, I do not know. Photo taken in Egypt.

BTW ... if anybody ever does want to know what kind of flower they have in a photo, if the pic shows good details, registering free on the UBC Botanical Forums is almost certain to gain a positive ID.

Man, some great stuff in here! I've pondered the notion of selling/trading the 17-55is for this lens. I have a 10-22 and a 70-20, so this is a good filler between them. Just don;t know if I could give up my 17-55/70-200 carry combo.
Of course, one day I will get FF and may keep the 60D when I do, but right now just using 60D. Tough call.
Did I say great pics in here?

each to his own I guess, some people like to collect or keep lenses even if they aren't used. I don't hesitate selling off lenses though. But I would never sell my 24-105, if I could only have one lens on my 5D, it would be this.

i doubt i'd ever sell it - not at the moment anyway. i do use it in the summer months for some local motorsport/track events & i sometimes use it in studio environments. i use it for urbex situations & have always used it for holidays except this last one last week when i just took the 50/1.4
keep the good work up guys/girls :)

Lived in Oregon for nearly 50 years. But did go to the east coast once. It was Savannah. I recalled how much we liked collecting the shells and shark teeth. This photo takes me right back there. It was a fun time. We walked the beach twice a week.
