So I'm becoming a prime guy and was going through recent shots and looking at them closer for sharpness. I came across this shot and found it to be one of my sharper images. Low and behold, it was shot with my 24-105!

just got this lens the other day... really much better than i had hoped for (especially for video)

I like the last one!
Amazing that this lens is able to perform that.
Going to rent it and try on my 7D, personally I find that so calls walk around 24-70L
is good at IQ, but very heavy without IS.

yeah... i didnt know quite how it was going to work, but i had borrowed one and the video alone (with the IS) made it worth it for me. Then, shooting on it for photos had me impressed all over again. I thought i would have less ability to create nice bokeh. And its so freaking sharp.

I shot a lot of high ISO pics too (like at 3200)... i'm pretty sure the second and fourth are high ISO examples.

SO I am getting a 5D MKII to replace my 7D + 17-55 combo.

The 17-55 LIVED on my camera and it is going to be sorely missed! (I absolutley adore that lens) My question is, what do you guys think of the 24-105 as not really a replacement, but as something similar for a kind of a jack of all trades lens like the 17-55 was? I know its f4 vs f/2.8, I know I will miss the f/2.8 because I like shooting wide open but I keep hearing how heavy and big the 24-70 is. I believe the weight of the 17-55 and 24-105 are very similar at 1.40 lbs.

I currently have a 28-135(came with the 7D kit), 85 f/1.8 and 100mm Macro f/2.8 USM that will be used on the 5D for a little while (months maybe longer) until I can afford some glass

I mean, that's exactly how I did it and I have no regrets. The 70-200 is perfect for portraits (what I do most) so I don't regret getting it first at all.

Probably 24-105L with my 7D gear. More comfortable with the weight and going for 35mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.4 for low light performance

I was only a couple of millimeters away from the lens at that focal length of 96mm. Less focal length than that and I would have had to actually be inside the lens. I had to cut off one of the green leaves on the bud because it was hitting the lens and moving the bud out of focus.

Edit: I'm talking lens focal lengths above, not the length of the extension tubes.

Well, my trusty ol' 24-105 on my trusty ol' 5D Classic is still my favored walkround and street shooting kit!

A couple weeks ago a few of us had a meetup in downtown Portland, OR shooting in this area called the Saturday Market which is filled with people, and then we moved to the Portland Waterfront. I was also packing the 16-35 but the 24-105 just never left the camera!

And, the IS on this lens combines with overall nice glass to produce some good, sharp hand-held shots!

It was nice to find fully framed shots of people, and then to be able to crop them to "portraits" without losing the sharpness/IQ!

With street photography, you're taking things "on the fly", so you can't really compose and shoot as if you are in a studio or with family or friends! You also don't want to get "in the face" of the people you are shooting, you want to keep your distance and keep things candid unless an opportunity and a composition really jumps out to work with an individual. Sure that happens on occasion, but the candids are more the rule, and it's nice to have the gear that provides good working images for that!

I always use manual exposure mode. I see no real use in AV or TV modes unless you're in really fast changing light like at sunset weddings, but that's just me :p

I always use manual exposure mode. I see no real use in AV or TV modes unless you're in really fast changing light like at sunset weddings, but that's just me :p

I'm the opposite. :) Only time I'm manual is when I do flash. :) Av mode user here 95% of the time. Wonder how everyone shoots as well. :)

Just got this lens two days ago. Unfortunately it is raining all day today so had to stay inside. Tried to take a few pictures of rain drops bouncing off the deck railing. Harder than I thought :-)

Had to bump the ISO higher than I'd like to keep the shutter just fast enough. This was at ISO 1600, f/4, 1/500, 105mm. Had to crop it pretty close too.
