Great shots, Wayne!
I'm wondering if you could post your exposure data for these (it's not imbedded in the images). The 24-105 is not the best lense for action shots, but you were obviously able to get some nice captures here, so it would be instructive to see what your settings were!

Thanks for the compliments Tony.
Refer back to the original post for EXIF data - have added it into the text. Photos were shot in RAW and then converted via DPP. I have then been using the PSE5 'Save for Web' function to achieve the 150k limit, and have now realised it deletes EXIF information. Open to other alternatives!
I have used quite fast shutter speeds I guess for those photos, but thought it would be needed to freeze the action which occurs quite quickly, and the lower aperature helps to blur out the background. I am still getting used to how the 24-105 sees things, but was pleasantly suprised with some of the images I took on that day.

Hey, Wayne!
Yeah, the PS Save For Web strips the exif data. The Save As function should retain it -- just a little experimenting to get the right settings. Having that exif data is great, though!
You're right about needing fast shutter speeds to catch the action. This is what prompted my post, because the 24-105 would be considered a "slow" lens. It was nice to see you be able to catch some action with it! That should encourage people to be bold and experiment!

Very quickly:)
Photomerge in cs3 allows for some blending and luckily it wasn't very choppy seas so the water movement wasn't very pronounced.

I just ordered one today, so it should be here in a week or so. I'm going to be spending some time along the Oregon coast in a few weeks and wanted a new walk-around lens. I looked at other lenses (both less and more expensive) and this seems to be the best for my purposes.

I am new to the forum and very new to this lens. I just got mine the other day. I haven't had a lot of time to shoot with it yet but wanted to see what it looked like. I'm beginning to think that there might be an issue with the auto focus on my 30d. This was taken a few minutes ago with the chip on a table, camera on a tripod and a softbox.
The Exif info is as follows.
Original date/time: 2008:03:20 19:52:33
Exposure time: 1/60
Shutter speed: 1/60.00
F-stop: 5.6
ISO speed: 100
Focal length: 85.0000
Flash: Not fired
Exposure mode: Manual
White balance: Auto
Orientation: Top-left

too bad i didn't do it much better, just i saw the clouds so i went out fast before the sunset and took few shots, even the tripod didn't help me much as it is not enough sturdy and my p-series filters also didn't work well to cut most vignetting.

The manual, I believe, states that not turning IS off on a tripod can mess with the gyros.

The manual, I believe, states that not turning IS off on a tripod can mess with the gyros.
The only definitive reasons I remember for turning the IS off when using a tripod are 1) To conserve battery power and 2) When you're panning -- some lenses have a panning mode 2, but with other lenses if you're panning the IS can act erratically.
I use IS on a tripod-mounted lens pretty often if I'm using a super-telephoto lens because long lenses show little jitters and IS helps. The manuals do state that IS can be effective with monopods. So, to me, any time when camera shake is a possibility IS will help. The only time I turn it off is when I'm planning either a panning shot or I remember to turn it off when doing a landscape shot.

No offense taken whatsoever - as I said this is my first L Lens so I didn't know what to expect. I know it isn't only the lens that makes a great pictures but I did everything I could to get it as sharp as possible (Tripod, IS off and Remote shutter release). I think that it is pretty sharp but as I said my Sigma is just as sharp for less than half the price.

I wouldn't generally choose the 24-105 for nightime "street" photography, but on the last New Years' Eve my son Josh used my 5D with the 245-105 while I used my 1D Mk III with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Here are a couple of his shots that show that, in a pinch, the 24-105 can come through (these were both hand-held):

I wouldn't generally choose the 24-105 for nightime "street" photography
Why not?
I'm thinking of getting this lens to replace my 'kit' lens, I enjoy nightime street photography, but normally using my tripod.
So wouldn't you recommend this lens for this?

Hello Pete!
As the pics show, the lens is useable! Especially if you're using a tripod or monopod you shouldn't have a problem. My comment was about hand-holding: if I were to plan to go out for night-time street shooting without a tripod or monopod, which lens would I choose?
And, that's a good question! On a crop camera I think I would lean on the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. A full frame camera is another question, because there's no equivalent to the 17-55. On this night, I was using a 1D with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS, so I was covered with one stop faster than the 24-105 (with IS as well), but a much longer lens.
For what you're talking about, using a tripod (or a monopod, which can be very handy) the main question would be how much lens speed do you need -- will the f/4 be a limiting factor? If I was really planning ahead, I'd pack the 24-105, but have a couple of fast primes as well!

Thanks Tony

I'd have to disagree with you there Tony.
I use the 24-105 frequently on nighttime shoots, with reasonable success. I find that 1/15, f4, and ISO1600 will get you sharp shots in most dim European cities. The image stabilization is what makes this lens usable for nighttime urban shooting. Besides a wide open prime I can't think of many other zooms that do a better job.
That said, I still wouldn't make this lens my first pick on a dark night out. Gimme a prime 30 anyday.

I took those photos from Scotland, the last one from Inverness, and the rest are around in the Scottish Highlands.
The pp is just minimal, the first one is out of camera, the last 3 i did play with curves, highlight/shadow, contrast, saturation, and then sharpness, all on PS CS2.

Hy google,
I've got one on 40D. The razor sharpness of this lens made me wonder if my 40D AF is not out of order. In some cases, the sharpness is incredible and sometimes it's awful. I might not be using it very well.
The range is the good one. The 105mm telephoto and wide at 24mm is enough for my family use. This range avoid me to take all my lens for short trips.
The weight make me feel my 70-200 f4L very light when i switch them ! Because the 24-105 is very compact.
I was used to IS and on this lens, it's confortable, but a bit noisy.

On my 40D, my 24-105L is my "all-purpose" lens. f/4 isn't the fastest, but I find myself shooting a lot in the 70-105mm range, even though I have a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS! Being able to go from 24mm to 105mm is perfect for me indoors and outdoors, and mated with a 580EX II, my indoor shots are great!
My IS is almost silent, though, especially compared to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Perhaps that most recent firmware update would help, cherrymoon...

@djeuch : of course, i had a 70-200 f4 L IS and it was noisier than the 24-105. But compared to the 17-85, the IS of 24-105 is noisier. You can heard it after shooting. But on 17-85, you don't heard ANY noise
I tested last firmware 1.0.8 but did not notice any difference. In any case, the IS does not bother me that much.
Like you, the 24-105 is the all-purpose lens. If I need wide angle, I prefer go 10-22 ;)

Hy google,
In some cases, the sharpness is incredible and sometimes it's awful.
I noticed that with every lens I used on both 40D's I owned. Of course, many people claimed it had to be user error. Nevermind that I have been shooting for a fair share of years and there were quite a few (though people here seem to forget) complaints of focusing problems when the 40D initially rolled out.

I also have this set up & love it. Alot of people told me the 24-105 wouldn't be wide enough for a crop body, but for my kind of shooting it works perfect.
When I want to go wide I just pop on my Sig 10-20.

I was shooting indoors with a 16-35mm that I had borrowed for a few days, just testing out the lens. I realized how good the IS on my 24-105 is and how much it has helped with my hand held shots of static objects. Somehow using the 16-35mm indoors made me see the value of IS. Now I know what Canon means by 3 stop IS.

EXIF says 13 seconds @ ISO100.
Its brilliant as a kit lens :). Its amazing for portraits also.
