EXIF says 13 seconds @ ISO100.

Its brilliant as a kit lens :). Its amazing for portraits also.

Great shot Canonised!, f11 at night? Exposure does not seem to be so long. What ISO?

24-105 is just a great lens. Never letting it go, I will be passing my copy down to my kids.

Did not occur to me to check the EXIF. 13s, makes sense. And I just noticed the trace of car lights on the road.

Thanks guys. Yes, it was a long exposure taken indoors from 30th floor with the lens right up against the window pane. I had others with faster shutter but there wasn't enough detail. I like this shot because the whole Civic Centre somehow looks like its lighted up.

I did take a long time to consider buying this lens but once I got it, I hardly used my primes. I use my beloved primes now for fast action and night shots now. The 24-105 is the default lens on my 5D.

Cheers
Harry

Siphanh, I don't know what those are. Raindrops in the sky, on the lens? Wind was coming from the West, I was looking to the West and had the camera/tripod basically in open french doors. It could be some artifact from the HDR tone mapping (maybe?). I know it isn't dust because I've taken quite a few pictures since and the spots aren't in any of them.

P.S. I took 6 different sets of 3 different exposures. I chose this one because I really liked the blue/green sun flare...:)

Apolgies if you already know this but dust on your sensor can go undetected with large apertures but they show up with smaller apertures. Set the aperture to F22 and take a picture of the sky. Then dial in F5.6 and do it again. You may find evidence of dust on the F22 shot but not the F5.6 shot.

I just purchased the 5D kit a few days ago intending to immediately sell the 24-105 for a small profit. Naturally, I had to make sure it worked and suddenly it may be my 24-70 that is up for sale. A most impressive lens IMHO and it looks like it will be my walk around right now.:D Here's a couple samples from my yard with crops. Photobucket really doesn't do these justice BTW--I really need to switch to something else. Flickr perhaps?? Anyway....

One from Disneyland Paris. IS worked a treat. On my 30D an excellent walk around lens. :D

Okay I needed a true 28mm wide angle on occasions but the reach of the 105 more than made up for this

Thanks! Both were f/7.1 and ISO 200. The flower was 105 mm at 1/640 at second and the faucet was 82 mm at 1/500. I have also obtained really sharp results at f/4. Honestly I was very pleasantly surprised overall. Here's one shot last night at dusk on our deck at f/4, ISO 1600, 1/40 handheld at 105 mm. I've added a crop as well. You be the judge!:D

Canon 30D
ISO 400
f/4.0

32MM FL
1 full stop underexposed.
I don't have a very steady hand and these were really get them while you can shots so the Camera was supported on a Monopod.

I wish if i live in that country then i will never regret or complaint to pass 1000 miles and spend $500 on petrol, too bad here i pass about 100km with about $10 on petrol and never feel so happy and get great results.

Hi,

First of all..great pics everyone!
I'm thinking of saving up for this lens, but I'll probably not get it before 2009. Next year and the year after that I'll be in China for my study and I'm now looking to push my current gear collection towards good solid allround setup for my time in China. Which probably means I'm gonna ditch my 70-200L. Does anyone have any experiences with this lens and a ultra-wide angle (like my Sigma 10-20) as a travelers setup?
I'm currently thinking of a 10-20 for the land/city/sky/waterscapes and other overviews, a 24-105L IS as my walkaround lens and a 50 1.4 for the lowlight stuff and portraits.
Or maybe a 10-20, 17-55 2.8 IS and 135L. Or a 10-20, 50 1.4 and a Canon G9? haha, What do you guys think?

Cheers!

You know... for some reason I REALLY like this shot.

I normally yawn a bit at the ol' fireworks shots... but damn it, I can't take my eyes off this shot. I think it is the buildings and the squiggly lines or something...

Good for ninja meditation technique practice. ;)

BTW: In Cantonese the word for fireworks is: 煙花 (unofficially phonetically spelt: "Yin Fa") which translates to: "Smoke Flower".

Apparently it is also slang for "prostitution". But my Chinese father-in-law says it, so it can't be too bad.

It is actually very good. I just find it a bit short for my style. That is why I am going to get the 24-105 (for the reach).

Hey, come to Hong Kong and I'll sell it to you. :)

I am actually Australian. I want to get the 24-105 next month, so... never mind ;) (I live in Hong Kong BTW, rarely go back to Australia).

Anyway, I better not hijack ANOTHER thread (I have a habit of doing that by accident).

Keep those samples coming. Not that I need much more convincing to get this great lens.

I understand, but reach is my concern. ;)

I don't think I would get a 24-70 for a few reasons.

1. I don't need 2.8 so much (flash and fast primes are becoming my friend).
2. I need more reach in a walk-about lens.
3. If I didn't need reach, I'd stick with the 17-55.
4. It is more expensive.

24-70 is a very good lens no doubt.

Yeah I tried it before. Quite heavy (not that that bothers me). But, like I said, I wouldn't swap the 17-55 for the 24-70. The difference between 55-70 isn't all that much, but (on a crop) 17-24 is more important (which I will cover with a 10-22mm later).

I have considered the 24-70, but dismissed it because the main reason for swapping is to get more reach.

Nothing wrong with both, depends on what you need. :D

Unbeatable scenery Tareq!!! I also brought my 24-105 with me as walk-around lens in Japan last April during the cherry blossoms festival and sure enough the lens is my pride and joy, receiving praises and print orders from the people I took shots of! The f/4 aperture is just perfect since background beauty of foreign land should not be hidden at all. Here's two of my shots....
The first pic was taken at Ueno Park at the height of the sakura or cherry blossom season and the other at Tokyo DisneySea, (Tokyo Disneyland, the second happiest place on earth :))

arctic butterfly is a highly recommended dry cleaning method
failing that, a copperhill sensor cleaning kit or similar might be suitable - but you have to be very careful... it is possible to totally destroy your sensor by being too rough with the swab... theres a thread on here somewhere with images to prove it

google is your friend

if you take it to a service centre to have it cleaned, you may or may not have to pay a fee BUT if they ruin it for you, its not coming out of your pocket

No doubt, this is a great lens. I use it most of the time on my 5D.
However, you should now that this lens in some situations has strong flare, strong vignetting wide open at 24 (on FF) and noticeable distortion at 24 mm.
On the other side it is very sharp even wide open, weather seales, 3 generation of IS, fast AF, very well bulit quality.

This lens seems like an excellent candidate for replacing 17-85 that I recently sold.

I need a walkaround lens for streetscapes, people, landscapes, etc. Occasionally, I need to shoot indoors, my boys, small group photos, birthday parties, etc. 50 1.4 isn't always short enough. I don't mind using a tripod, if I need to.

Would this lens be the best choice?

I realize 24mm isn't very wide on my 30D, but I am covered there with my 10-22.

I want an L lens; I am thinking of 35L and 24-70L as well. Any thoughts? Any others I should consider?

TIA, everyone.
