Hey, that looks like a Reach chopper. My son's a paramedic with that company.

This lens seems like an excellent candidate for replacing 17-85 that I recently sold.

I need a walkaround lens for streetscapes, people, landscapes, etc. Occasionally, I need to shoot indoors, my boys, small group photos, birthday parties, etc. 50 1.4 isn't always short enough. I don't mind using a tripod, if I need to.

Would this lens be the best choice?

I realize 24mm isn't very wide on my 30D, but I am covered there with my 10-22.

I want an L lens; I am thinking of 35L and 24-70L as well. Any thoughts? Any others I should consider?

TIA, everyone.

i love mine for walkaround, i have a 40D and i actually found it to be pretty wide in most situations... i also have a 17-55 and a 10-22... and often i dont worry about swapping as the 24-105 does the job. the extra reach is good too, and IS is good for indoors as long as theres light

Interesting you say that. I am considering getting/keeping the same combo (10-22 + 24-105 + 17-55). How's that work out for you?

its really good... i will be adding a few primes to the lineup over time (weddings/portraits etc) but apart from a 70-200 2.8 IS i will not buy any more zooms

this is one i took on my 40D... can you guess which lens of the 3?

Since it's in this thread, I'll say the 24-105. ;)

What do you use the 17-55 for mainly?

Heh. You thought you'd trick me. ;)

The colour is very nice in that shot. How much PP has been done on it? Did you use a polarizing filter?

The 17-55 is an indoor general lens I suppose. The more I think of it the more I want to keep it (still for sale, just-in-case).

Yup that's true...when I first got the 40D kit coupled with the 28-135, I thought "OK, this lens is alright".
But when I finally got the 24-105, it was night and day. Vibrant colors was the first thing I noticed.

Hahaha. That's a public park provided barbecue grill.

That's what I suspected... Looks a tad unsanitary.

BTW. I am struggling to think if I should really get this lens or not. Everytime I think I should (money coming soon) I think the following:

I can get the 24-105 + 430ex + 17-55 (which I have) + + 100mm 2.8 macro (which I have) and the 200mm 2.8L (which I have)

or

10-22 (second hand) + 580ex + 17-55 (which I have) + 100mm 2.8 macro (which I have) and the 200mm 2.8L (which I have)

I like the 24-105 because I can use the length a lot as a walk-around. But those other things sure are tempting...

I am beginning to hate this decision. LOL

^ i'd pick one between the 24-105 and 17-55. Also, wait for the 430II. The 580II is awesome, but it's gigantic. If you don't need the power, wait for it's improvements in the 430II next month and save ~$100. But get a II flash for sure. Lots of little improvements that all add up.

Canon Hong Kong already have the 430exII on their website:

http://www.canon.com.hk/en/Consumer/Product/default.aspx?cat_id=25&series_id=10004

I think I'll go for it first (over the 580exII) but get the 580exII if I feel I need more than one flash one day (the 430 then acting as a slave).

I've been trying to sell the 17-55 for a while, no luck. The shop will take a trade-in on it, but it's only $3000HKD ($385 USD) which doesn't seem worth it.

Argghh, I'm sick of thinking of this.

Well, a good thing happened.

I called a reliable camera shop in Hong Kong (Tin Cheng (http://www.tincheungcamera.com.hk/home.php)), and they are more willing to trade it at a decent value.

They also have the 430ex II in stock! So I think I will trade the 17-55. Get the 430ex II, the 10-22 and the 24-105.

Ahh happy days. :D

Expect a duck shot from me here within a month (well maybe a pidgeon/sparrow/building).

This lens is great. I love the colour and contrast it has, reminds me a lot of my 200mm 2.8L actually (not as sharp, but not too bad). The f/4 takes a little getting use to (needs a boost in ISO at times), but overall I am much happier with it over my 17-55. The build quality IS a lot better.... I love it. 2nd favourite lens (after the 200mm).

So here are my samples (first serious use).

My daughter ready for school (love the colour it makes)... NOT SHARPENED from RAW... not bad.

This lens does work a lot better with a flash doesn't it (just got the 430ex II yesterday. First flash shots this morning). :D

Can you believe this is a 100% crop. WOW! I love this lens.

This lens reminds me of the 70-200 f/4IS when you get the focus right (I had a bit of trouble with focus when I first got - rushed too much).

Personally I go into Lr and make it 100% then selectively capture the screen.

You should be able to do something similar.

I'm sure there's a way to do it in Photoshop...

Just view/magnify the image to 100% in your photo editing software then make a selection using a rectangular marquee tool ( square running ants), then crop that selected part.

Edit: Stealthy Ninja - you are as quick as a Ninja in typing! I must type fast next time LOL.

Yes, I did use a flash for this. :p

I have 2 low light primes and still prefer the 24-105 flashed. I have seen amazing results bounce flashing with this lens. My three photos a few posts up were all using flash.

Flash + 24-105L here as well
http://davepearce.smugmug.com/photos/52591948_pFRCZ-L.jpg

Before I got my first 24-105L I used to walk past this thinking it would be nice to shoot it but i didn't want to use flash and i only had the kit lens that went wide enough at the time. When i got my 24-105L i went straight to this and this was the first shot i took outside of the shop with my 24-105L and i was hooked on IS.

Those shots remind me of what I miss most about where I lived in Tasmania (part of Australia in case you don't know ;) ).

I lived in a town called Kingston, south of Hobart (the capital city of Tasmania) we were far enough from the lights of the city that at night the sky was full of stars.

In Hong Kong you're lucky if you can see 10 stars at night.

But then again, you don't run into things when you walk around in the "dark".

Yeah, I took those from Mauna Kea in Hawaii :) It was pretty amazing being out there. There was an almost full moon the night I was there unfortunately, so a lot of the sky was pretty washed out - I can only imagine what it's like without that. However, even then it was pretty incredible.

I've never done any HDR, I don't have any suitable software, but, I thought you needed a number of shots to create an HDR?

Pete

You need at least 3 different exposures, but if you shoot in RAW, open image and save at 3 different exposures from say -2, 0 and +2, then merge together in suitable software like photomatix and use the tone mapping setting.

Taken with the 5D and 24-105 f6.3 1/160 sec ISO 160

these were both very heavily cropped down also, still crisp and clean pictures with wonderful bokeh

I like that many of my lenses are the only ones in the world that can make certain shots. Here's one:

http://giles-guthrie.com/gallery/images/20080705194939_5d-4224-edit.jpg

I noticed this view, and just had to shoot it. Thanks to Canon for the Image Stabilisation that allowed me to shoot at one fifth of a second, handheld, as a tripod would not have been usable. Thanks also to Adobe, for their Shadow recovery tool, to bring out a little detail in the trees and the road.

Why is this lens so nice to use.

I have no idea. I don't miss the F/2.8 I had on the 17-55 (maybe because I nearly always use flash now). I don't miss 17mm (I really like 24mm for some reason).

Maybe it the awesome reach it gives me...

Maybe it's the build quality...

I just love this lens.

40D + 24-105 + 430exII = never come off Stealthy's Camera (well, I do put on the 200mm 2.8L at times).

sooooo....

I've always wondered about this lens. I had a 24-70 and didn't like the weight of it, and didn't like storing the hood in the bag (in use it was perfect though). But now I've got the 24-105 hood in use for my 17-40 and 24L already, and I'm wondering about this lens anyway... I think I'm going to order the 5Dii kit, so I can play with this. If I don't like it, I'll just sell it used and make a quick buck......

hurry up 5D launch!

The wide end of this lens works really well for me on my 40D which is my only digital body right now, its AWESOME on my EOS1 film body.

Here are a three of my shots, the first is a HDR of Hammons Tower in Springfield Missouri, the second is a picture of Zac Hanson while on the Walk fundraiser and the third is new construction next to the Pageant in St. Louis where Hanson performed on 9/23/08.

It was my oldest daughter's 19th birthday yesterday and she got some flowers from her boyfriend as a prelude to dinner, a concert, etc. I wanted to shoot these but wasn't getting the shot I wanted. Seeing them on the monitor confirmed my disappointment. So out of frustration I grabbed the exposure slide control and cranked it to the right. After a bit of fiddling, I was somewhat pleased with my first (albeit accidental) high-key effect image.

Thanks for the comments on the images. My daughter really wanted photos of the flowers and was pretty happy with the few that I sent her after she returned to campus. I know HK is an acquired taste, but I have received some very positive comments from some co-workers who also enjoy photography. Same with the shoes - I laugh every time I see the youngest child wear them.

Quite honestly, it was more fun rediscovering this lens than anything. I bet it hadn't been on my 5D for about 3 months until last weekend. I appreciate the C & C from all of you.

GO GREEN!!!

Thanks! I've never golfed at Arcadia. I'd love to play it sometime though. I've heard it's a remarkable course. I'm sure it's worth the price of admission for the views alone.

Very nice/rich shots, thanks for sharing!

Thanks...I actually did some post processing to these photos. I find with overcast conditions I usually have to do some contrast and saturation adjustments with just about any lens I own.

Waterfall in the Porcupine Mt area of the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Sorry, but cant remember the river name right now. I'll have to look it up later.

Amazing shot...beautiful scene. Lived in Michigan all my life and I've never been up to the Porcupine Mts. Love to visit there some time. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I finally remembered, it was Manido falls, Presque Isle River, Porcupine Mts State Park. I was up there with a couple of buddies. One is an Mich State alum, played football in the early 80's. We had a good time. All the reports said that the fall colors were at peak or near peak. But they weren't that great. I heard later that the next week they were much better.
