No filter - just a long exposure at around 3am, including the first few moments of moonrise at the very end of the exposure, to illuminate the mountain.

Is there a general agreement that this a great lens for the walk-around purpose. Will have other lenses for "specialty" shots. The FL range and the IS is a real selling point for having this in my kit.

If not FF, but a crop, ie. 50D, will it still begood for that purpose???

This lens is great on any body. I've used it on my 40D for well over a year now.

The comment was how much better it is on a full frame body. I didn't really know what that meant until I got my 5D Mark II and yes it is spectacular but will continue to use it on my 40D as well.

So, would any of you swap your 24-105L for a 24-70L if price was no object?

I can't decide which to get. I'd prefer the f/2.8 if price was no object, but the saving with the 24-105L is appealing.

This is obviously a personal opinion, cost wasn't an issue for me when I pulled the trigger on my 24-105 I wanted to range as it really is a great all around lens and a constant f/4 was good enough for my needs as I don't do a whole lot of low light work.

So if your typical subject / type of work would utilize the faster lens and shorter focal length then the Brick is the way to go :-)

Either way I think you will be happy with your purchase.

No - they're two deceptively similar lenses which are really suited to two completely different applications.

The 24-105L is *the* travel lens bar none, especially when paired with a 5D or 5D2 body - reasonably lightweight (for a full-frame zoom), a useful zoom range and IS, which is invaluable when shooting in many locations which don't allow tripods (e.g. art galleries, subways, etc.). It's not so good for indoor or evening event photography, as IS cannot compensate for motion blur, and the f/4 maximum aperture allows for less subject isolation through blurring.

The 24-70L, while sharing a similar focal length, is more suited to event photography or photojournalism - the f/2.8 helps when you're trying to shoot moving, dimly-lit subjects, while the lack of IS isn't an issue when you need to shoot faster than 1/100s to avoid motion blur anyway. When you're shooting dimly-lit still subjects without a tripod (e.g. in a museum) the lack of IS gives you a two-stop disadvantage over the 24-105L, while, for outdoor shooting where you aren't trying to minimise DOF (whether in bright light, or on a tripod in dim light), it weighs more and takes up more space for no benefit whatsoever.

I purchased my 24-105 back in January. I finally was able to really get some use out of it this past weekend at the Muscle/Hotrod car show in Ocean City MD. To boot, when I went to Ocean City, I did not even know that there was a car show so that made it that much more enjoyable. I truly like this lens. It's light, the IS is silent and takes really sharp pictures. Here's a few of the hundreds of cars I shot this weekend. Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

pratman64, I use "Canvas size..." (Image -> Canvas Size) two times to create two borders. The first time with 2 pixels colour white
and the second time with 20 pixels colour black. Then you can put some texts on it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks - It was the perfect conditions nice bright overcast (Natures Softbox). That said, the Reds on my 5D Mark II seem to pop more than any other body I've ever had. This was shot RAW and processed under the default "Standard" picture style with almost no other tweaking.

I really liked this lens on my crop bodies but put it on a full frame and forget about it. One of the best combos for an all around lens... Wide and Reach with awesome IQ. Glad I invested in one a few years ago :-)

I loved it on my 40D and still use it on it all the time. It really does shine on a Full Frame Body though. I never thought it would make that much of a difference but it does.

I invested in this lens with the intent of going FF eventually, I didn't think it would have been so soon but again I think that it is great investment and for me it is fast enough. The only reason I would go with the 24-70 is if I needed it for lower light. I think that the IS on the 24-105 is a huge bonus as well.

I don't think you will be disappointed with either lens. You just need to figure out which one offers the better features for you and your shooting style / subject matter.

Get a Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 for $200 and get the same effect with your 50D. I use it for better wide when I am using my 50D vs my 5D. The IS is a great part on the 24-105 f/4L IS. For those hand-held 1/15 sec shots....Rich
