Hello,
I am considering upgrading to this lens as my primary walk around lens and am interested to see some sample pics taken with a 20D or 350D, and especially some 100% crops to compare the sharpness and contrast to my EF-S 17-85 IS that this would replace. This is a very large investment for me and I want to know that it will be worthwhile on my 350D.
Please post pics here, or if full size photos are too large I would appreciate very much receiving them as an email attachement sent to rollingball@ gmail. com
Thanks!

Another example below (67mm; f4; ISO 800; 1/50th - available light - no sharpening on the crop - may have added some to the full shot but I can't remember). Keep in mind that this shot was hand held at ISO 800!!

It's great and works really well with flash.
It's my best lens investment. It stays on the body as the default lens, my wife loves it, it looks sexy, it's light and balanced, has IS, and has a great average focal length to capture almost anything as best you could with one lens. Plus, it works well with tubes (I prefer the 70-200 though).

Does a great job. Of the four L's I've bought this is the only one that seems to offer added value over and above the competition. A keeper for me. Ideal on a FF body and just damn excellent on a crop. Consistent. I rarely take it off my camera.

Thanks a lot _ you can see from my sig the overlap as some would say but all three have a place for me. Actually my 17-40 f/4L gets used the most probably around 17 ~ 30mm it seems. I've only had the 24-105 a short while but simply love the results it gives.

Thanks ccp _ so for its a quick manual process I learned for PSE 4. From a 700x466 72 ppi tiff (jpeg will work too) after doing all the adjustments the first step is the Drop Shadow in the Frames palette. Second step is to resize the Canvas 0.03 Black. Fourth step is to resize the Canvas 0.6 White. Fifth step is to resize the Canvas 0.05 Black. Lastly choose your text.

Of course, then we have to narrow it down to prime vs. zoom for walkaround. If you're talking IQ, then the 35 1.4L is by far the best walkaround I've owned. If you're talking versatility, probably the 24-105L IS. If you mean straight quality period, I'd say 24-70L. It's all so subjective, you could never say for sure.
sjafari
22nd of August 2006 (Tue), 19:40
i meant more on the versatility level than pure IQ, i probably could have been more clear on that in the first post.. on most all occasions though, its really an ideal lens (atleast with my shooting habbits). Honestly though, I would be incredibly happy with almost all of the L Zooms, so my bias doesnt mean that i have any less faith in the 17-40 or 24-70.
RAitch

Ya, the fact that you can pull off a shot in almost any situation during a walkaround is what wins for me. This lens doesn't force you into any compositions like a prime would. IQ comes second to useability for me. What good is a super sharp contrasty shot if the image isn't that great in composition or whatever.
goatee
25th of August 2006 (Fri), 03:51
More experienced / better photographers can picture what shot they want before the camera reaches the eye. Not so for me unless shooting portraits / candids. I find having a prime on does force me, but it forces me to be more creative with my framing, and I often find coming back from somewhere where I've just had the 85mm on, that I've captured some great shots that I would have otherwise missed.
I'd like to see some more shots from this lens that make use of the IS.

Not sure if that was a slam or not (whether I'm not experienced or better)... but assuming I just lift my camera to my eye and play with the zoom until things look "good" was wrong.
I think ahead and have often stopped for a while to look at a scene before figuring out how I want to shoot it.
By "forcing into compositions" I meant that you're going to have to rely on your position and in some cases won't have enough time to change your position before your chance is gone. My toddler is a prime example (excuse the pun) where he's constantly moving and will normally turn his back to the camera. You have to be in the right time and place to get a shot that you're looking for... and with a prime mounted... you're not going to get the shot you're envisioning (or at least not as often).
Using primes sure does make you think more about your position... which is a good thing. But the versitility (sp?) of using a zoom makes more shots possible. Not only that, but you have a variety of options at your disposal in one lens. Get close and use wide... or back up and zoom in. They both produce different effects (perspective, distortion) and will affect your background bokeh differently.

I guess it would technically be 2nd generation, because it doesn't have Mode 2 (panning). However the level of correction and the speed of operation (time it takes for the image in the viewfinder to appear stable) is on par with the newest IS systems. For example I felt it's at least as good as the Mode 1 stabilization on the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and it's better than the IS on the 17-85mm IS.

Not at all - it's more of a self criticism. I know what you mean about the toddler - I have a two year old who doesn't stop running, and a 2 month old who doesn't stop wriggling from side to side :). With my 85mm lens on, I get some gems of my toddler, although, to be fair, most of them are pretty tight headshots (which I love anyway).

Ok- I just got my 24-105 L the other day and after using it today, I have to say I am very disappointed...
Images are SOFT... Very soft.... Spent all day in the car driving to capture some fall foiliage, and came home and was extrememly frustrated...
After reading everyones reviews here and other places, I must conclude I have a soft copy of this lens. I am going to go out tomorrow morning and take some additional test shots, but I am 95% sure this lens is going back.
I have to say it really annoys me how many people had to try MULTIPLE times to get a good copy of this lens.
For 1100+ bucks I would expect far better quality control.....
If my tests prove what I think they will, I either try again or order the 24-70 2.8.

Out of the frying pan into the fire with that choice methinks. I haven't seen many complain about the IS L and had one myself which was wonderful right from the box. Doesn't mean your copy isn't dodgy but when a lens with a very good reputation for QA doesn't seem right then worth testing in a formal way before drawing conclusions.

Actually from what I've read it seems like the 24-70L is tougher when it comes to finding a sharp copy (and yes, I realize that these issues are exaggerated on the forums and one may get the impression that there are no such things as lenses that re sharp out of the box).
Maybe you could post a sample or two?

Not sure what you mean by "worth testing in a formal way before drawing conclusions". I would consider shooting all day with a variety of settings pretty good testing, and thats what I drew my initial conclusion from...
I do feel I have the right to be frustrated about the QC of this lens- I never said 50% of them are unfit for use, but I know that others had issues with this lens (and yes, the 24-70 as well). I am fully open to the fact that I may have received one soft copy out of 12,000 great ones, and the odds just weren't in my favor... But since my excitement was beaten down, I get to complain .
If the issue was with the 50mm 1.8, I wouldn't mind so much. But I guess my thoughts of entering the L class of lenses held higher expectations, thats all.
RAitch
22nd of October 2006 (Sun), 13:10
I've owned 2 of these... and nothing was wrong with either of them.
I've had problems with other items (XT, 85L, 50 1.8 ) so there are really no consistent QC issues... except that there ARE some QC issues.
Some people have found that they thought their lenses were screwed up and mis-calibrated... but then it turned out that their camera was actually out of calibration. The lenses that seemed screwed were actually OK... and the ones that seemed fine were actually out.
You see... sometimes there are issues (it's a given) but it's sometimes unclear exactly where the issues are.
(By "some people" I mean "me")
Whenever I buy new gear... I always assume I'm going to have to send it in. It's the way it goes... especially in a small town where the mom-pop stores like to resell returned gear... hmmm... why was it returned??
It's weird... because my track record shows I'm just as bad off buying new as used.

I really don't understand why some complain about the "Bokeh" with this lens. That'd be the least of my concerns but have been fairly pleased with its results related to it. After all its an f/4 lens so I'd tend to think one might not expect super results in this aspect.

There's only so much Bokeh you're going to get at F4... if bokeh is your primary concern, I wouldn't get this lens.. Either a fast prime or the 24-70 will be much better for bokeh..

Which pic are you referring too? The one I posted above is simply depicting lens IQ. Bokeh wasn't a concern if thats your point.

One of the design goals for IS was to stabilize you on moving vehicles... Boats, helicopters, etc. I would imagine a Disney ride qualifies. :p
I shot a few pictures in "Ellen's Energy Crisis" of the dinosaurs. Cranked up the ISO a touch and used every bit of f/2.8. Worked pretty well for 1/13s @ f/2.8 - no IS.

Wow! Your dog shot looks so amazing. Owners of the 24-70mm say you need the f/2.8 to get nice bokeh. But you got it done. Also, how is it that you can take a photo of an animated object and still manage to freeze it. Was your dog not moving at all? I always fear that if I buy this lens I will not be able to freeze action. Do you lose a lot of shots duee to action of animated objects?

To be honest, freezing action isn't a problem outdoors - the sunny 16 rule as a guideline means, if it's nice and sunny, you can shoot at f/16, and set the shutter speed 1/ISO - e.g. f/16, 1/100s, ISO 100, or f/16, 1/1600s, ISO 1600. Seeing this, even on an overcast day, outdoors it's not a big deal getting fast enough shutter speeds to freeze action - the killer is indoors, but even then, it's only the one stop.
For me, the reason to get the 24-70 would be if you want a portrait lens - at f/2.8 the depth of field is that much smaller, it makes a big difference, but as I have my 85mm f/1.8 for portraits, I'm much happier with the 24-105.

Owners of the 24-70mm say you need the f/2.8 to get nice bokeh.
I think you're misunderstanding the bokeh issue between these two lenses. If you compare them both at 70mm and f4, the 24-70L will tend to have a nicer quality to the OOF area. F2.8 blurs more, but thats not why the 24-70L has nicer bokeh. That said, I am a new owner of the 24-105L and more than satisfied with it's performance! My copy is sharp wide open, even at full tele, with great color and contrast.
