Yes it does need a slim frame at 10mm and it's never a good idea to buy cheap filters anyway as you may as well smear grease on your lens.

I'm using Hoya Pro1 on mine and haven't noticed any vignetting with my UV filter. I haven't had much chance to use my CPL yet (which is slightly thicker), but if there was any vignetting with my CPL shots, I haven't noticed.

I think if you get a filter like the Pro1s, which are thinner than most but not considered "slim", it should be fine.

I think the Pro 1s are thin frames, mine certainly is. It says LPF on the box (Low Profile Frame)

I`m using it at 10mm, much like a prime. Rarely do I feel the need to zoom in. According to photozone.de, Wigma`s best MTF for this focal length can be reached at f/5.6 or f/8. However, I often find myself at f/9 or f/10 for landscapes (don`t let the nasty diffraction ruin your photos!)

I would suggest getting a graduated ND filter set and holder for landscapes. It helps so much with them.

These were taken in Colorado. .9 ND filter used.

I'm using a Cokin P-series holder with the 77mm adapter ring. Then some ~$50 filters. One is a .9 Soft edge ND the other is a .6 Hard edge ND.

In daylight f4-5.6 is plenty. Indoors it will depend on lighting. Of course you can always bump up the iso.

I am sure this has been addressed before, but how come some of the pictures show such severe distortion, while so many others don't? Have the others been post processed to fix the distortion?

_aravena

Different angles, different distances. Use one subject and see for yourself. It takes time to learn. Just like I can shoot with a fisheye and have no distortion.

mij
22nd of September 2008 (Mon), 19:36
It is just the normal problem of converging parallels that you get with any lens when it is not horizontally perpendicular to your subject. This effect though is more pronounced at smaller focal lengths, and so can seem quite severe on ultra-wide angles as it only needs to be tilted slightly to produce a dramatic effect.

Those whose photos which do not show any distortion probably had the camera level, sadly not all subjects give you that opportunity.

Michael.

I recently got my EOS ELAN 35mm camrea.. I attached the 10-20 to it and looked through the viewfinder... MEGA vignetting!! At 10mm the image has a big black circle around it. So even if you can physically attach it and take a picture (I didn't try) it's just not worth while.

I think it's really on how you use the lens. I've had MANY spectacular pictures. But if you try and fill the frame at 10mm with people (for example) the outter part of the frame is going to be distorted and look blurry.

Tempusfugit

I bought the Sigma 10-20mm before going to Jotunheimen in Norway. I wanted a lens to capture landscapes.

Getting a good shot was harder than I tought. As it is 10mm there is so much inside the frame and a lot of things you need to adjust for before taking the photo. Some photos, for instance, have my shadow in them - I just didn't see it in the viewfinder.

All shots are with f/9 - f/11 or so. They are have some kind of post-process, mostly just "auto-curves", slight constrast- and brightness adjusment

My hand. This illustrates the pros and cons of a wide-angle lens.

http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs32/i/2008/189/d/9/Wide_angle_illustraded_by_Tensense.jpg

Besseggen, Jotunheimen.
A classic shot, I am not alone with standing at this position and taking a photo of Gjende (to the left) and Bessvattnet (right) which is several hundreds of meters above Gjende. You can see to the end of Gjende, and it's (I measured on Google Earth) 13 kilometers to there!

http://fc21.deviantart.com/fs32/i/2008/217/3/e/Besseggen_by_Tensense.jpg

Taking later, when we had climbed all the way down to the "edge".
http://fc54.deviantart.com/fs32/i/2008/217/f/0/Besseggen_and_Gjende_by_Tensense.jpg[img]

Other shots from Jotunheimen:

[IMG]http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs32/i/2008/227/c/b/Waterfall_by_Tensense.jpg

I truely recommend hiking in the mountains. Walking bare-footed on this "grass" was simple amazing.
http://fc41.deviantart.com/fs31/i/2008/217/b/4/Rested_by_Tensense.jpg

When the wheater is fine, its easy taking shots like these. When the sky and the ground are equally bright.

http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wingsguidemeje5.jpg

My favorite shot. As it is so wide, using a polarizer is hard. Using it vertically is much easier.

Here is another shot with the lens. Taking close-ups is fun!

The image was originally uploaded to Facebook is it's heavily compressed. However - the conscept is still visible.

Purchased this lens yesterday, really liking it so far - although the weather has not been fantastic to be out and about with the camera.

Here's one from earlier this afternoon when I popped out on my bike.

Taking a bit of time to learn how to use this lens and I am beginning to wonder if it's a little soft and whether the focus is accurate - especially since the distance indicator never seems to make sense....

Anyway here's a photo taken this evening.

Karizmatik
26th of October 2008 (Sun), 09:03
^ CPL's just deepen the colors IMO. They say they get rid of reflections, etc aswell - But I haven't noticed a huge difference, although I don't take alot of "reflected" shots. I think it definitely helps with color though.

I love the Sigma 10-20mm too, here is a quick sample one:
