I keep reading about CPLs only affecting certain portions of the image when it's on an ultra wide lens, resulting in an uneven sky. Have any of you seen this in your photos? I haven't seen that on any of these posted photos so far.

Excellent work. I assume that you have corrected for distortion?

Matt Peters

It's a superb lens and has rarely left my camera since I got it. I bought it when I realised that my kit lens was almost always set to 18mm but I wasn't getting a wide 'feel' from that. At the 10mm end it produces very exciting perspectives and at the 20mm end it's practically a 'standard' lens. The only downside is it could do with being a stop faster, but then I suppose it would be a stop more expensive too!

That's remarkable. How come your lines are so straight. Is it because of the angle of the lens? i.e. no tilt? I get significant distortion at 18mm, but then it is not a UWA lens.

I have lots to learn yet.

Unless you need the f/3.5-4.6 aperture of the Canon (which would make it slightly better for indoor shots- handheld) I don't see any reason why it's much better than the Sigma. It also goes to 22mm but really most of us use it at 10mm anyways. :)

Definatly a great lens for holidays!!

I have been reading through this thread for the past couple days. First let me say there are some very nice photos in here. I have been heavily debating whether or not I should add this lens to my line up. If you all do not mind I would really like to get some answers from those who own it so I figured what better place to post than here.
1. I have read a lot of reviews and there are complaints about it being soft in the corners. Is it really that bad? I figure it is kind of the nature of the UWA
2. How many of you have went to the Canon, Tamron or Tokina?
3. If any how do you feel about the change?

I will be using the lens for large group shot, landscape and cityscape shots. I have found that 17mm leaves a little to be desired. Any encouragement for a guy on the fence? Thank you for your replies.

I haven't noticed it at all.

2. How many of you have went to the Canon, Tamron or Tokina?

I tried all three. And went with the Sigma instead. Why? No reason in particular, just over-all build quality (Like a tank) and feel of the lens was better. No real 'noticeable' difference between Canon/Sigma apart from price.

For starters, this lens is fantastic for the price! The Canon 10-22 is about $200 more. I think the Sigma may have a better build quality (while the Canon has a faster aperture). But for outdoor use and HDR, most people will be using it with a tripod anyways (I do get great results using it indoors with flash though!). I think it's nice and sharp, and if you don't like it there will always be someone willing to buy it off youl.

I will be keeping this lens unless I ever go FF then I wil get a Canon 17-40.

Hoya Pro-1 Digital are good. They are "low profile" (but not "thin" so you can still use a normal lens cap on them). :)

HERES (http://hvstar.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9) a great place to buy them.

The reason was the 5D II, but at this moment i don't have money for that, so the 10-20 will stay a little bite longer on my 40D.

There are some awesome photos in this thread. I am looking for my first lens upgrade from the stock 18-55 that came with the 400D and I think this is it. I just need to find one at the right price now as money is tight given the time of year.

This is precisely why my 10-20 is going in the For Sale bin later this week. My 5Dii arrives in a few days and I'll be re-buying the 17-40L - this time for the right reason. This was a fab lens for me and I'll certainly miss it.

Does anyone know if the price will continue to drop on these? I noticed a few weeks ago that they were around ~$500, now I'm seeing it everywhere for $430 or so! Seems like an awesome price. My fiancee is getting it for me for xmas, but we wanted to see if prices would hold here or keep going down.

It is called a rebate. There was a 47dollar rebate on mine. The rebates end in January then the price will go back up

Here (http://www.tamron.com/lenses/learning_center/tools/focal-length-comparison.php) is a tool you can use to see focal length comparisons. It wont go to 10mm but it can go from 11-500mm. Hope you find this useful.

No, I don't have a CPL filter. I adjusted the color in the sky but it was very rich in the original also. I was pretty surprised to see this, I got this result in few other photos also.

Look at the sky on this one, this is straight from the camera, converted to JPG in DPP:

this may be a ridiculously stupid question...but i'm not used to UWA...but when printing out an image with this lens, do you need to have different dimensions then the typical 8X10...what's a typical larger print size that others have done here?

thanks in advance

Karizmatik
10th of January 2009 (Sat), 00:18
^ The sensor remains the same, so the print size remains the same, too.

The only thing that changes when using UWA is that it .. err.. squeezes more into the frame.

You can of course open up Photoshop and crop a "Panorama" section of the photo and stretch it out longer by blowing it up - Then you'd have your typical 8" width, but could make it say.. 15" long instead.

But to answer your initial question, the print dimensions do not differ.

^ CPL's just deepen the colors IMO. They say they get rid of reflections, etc aswell - But I haven't noticed a huge difference, although I don't take alot of "reflected" shots. I think it definitely helps with color though.

Here's an example of how a CPL DOES remove reflections. I took these two photos within seconds of each other. The first "Unpolarized" so it shows the reflection of the mountains in the water, and the second photo was Polarized, so it removed the reflections. Those dark spots in the water in the second pic, are just the shadows from the clouds.

Both of those were shot with the Canon EOS A2 film camera, on Velvia 50 slide film. They were scanned with an HP Photosmart 20 slide/negative scanner, so that could have caused the out of focus look, and the noise. Trust me, they were in focus when I took the photos, and the original Velvia slides are very crisp, clean, and tack sharp. Sorry you don't like the photos.:(

DreDaze

not that i don't like them...i was just wondering if that was from the lens not having a polarizer, or if it just wasn't in focus...i don't have a polarizer right now, but am beginning to think that i probably need one...i still don't really get exactly how they work

Canonswhitelensesrule
27th of January 2009 (Tue), 00:16
Sorry if I took your comments the wrong way.

For the unpolarized image, the clouds may have caused some shadowing on the large mountain to the left, ( I believe you can actually see the shadows on it), which may have caused it to not appear quite so sharp as the polarized image.

I used the Canon EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 lens for both images, camera on a tripod. Used the Cokin "P" circular polarizing filter in the Cokin "P" filter holder.

Probably the easiest way to see how a CPL (Circular Polarizing Filter) works, is to hold it up to your eye, (I believe at a right angle to the sun is best), at a subject, and just turn the polarizing element with your hand to see how it cuts or reduces the reflections.

You can even look at a reflection in a store window, and as you turn the filter element, you can see the reflection disappear, and then reappear, depending on how much you turn the filter element.

I'm sorry that I don't know the exact "technical" terminology, or data, but I hope my explanation wasn't that bad.

A CPL not only removes reflections etc, it also, as I'm sure you are well aware, helps to darken the sky, esp a bright blue sky to make it very saturated looking.

It can also be used in a pinch as a ND filter, as you lose approx 2 stops of light with it.

Hey, that's a Noink!

Haha I know but my professor told us we aren't going to need them anymore so I used it for ink in a different class ;)
