Just ordered this lens today from Amazon. It was down to the wire against the Tokina 11-16mm but the money saved and extra reach will now justify a 24-105!!

Got mine today, some of the handheld shots looked a bit soft so I tried taking a pic of the garage door to see if I could check the sharpness. Let me know what you think. 100% crop out of the camera, shot in RAW and on a tripod. I don't think it's the best sharpness test ever devised!!

Odd question, but do many of you make use of your flash when using this lens or do you seem to not use it? I'm about to order this weekend but I'm not sure if I should add in a 430ex or not. Any issues with using a flash if i were to be photographing people in dimmer areas?

You could also getting the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 if you want to shoot in low light situations. A flash does come handy with allmost any lens though.

I only have built-in flash and it is useful but only when the lens hood is off of the camera and I shoot @ 15-20 mm..Otherwise I get big dark area in the bottom of the photo becasue of the width of the lens..I'm not sure about the 430 EX though, I don't know if it would help.

The onboard flash is pretty useless with this lens. The 430 would be much much better because you can bounce it to fill the frame. The thing i like about all the UWA lenses is you can hand hold them for so long... the f2.8 would be nice but not a show stopper IMO. F4 @ 10mm with a reasonible ISO and a shutter speed of 1/10 and your talking pretty dim light before camera shake starts to come along.

You need to bounce the flash. If you use it directly then at 10mm it wont cover the full frame.
cheers

no of course you are...as long as it's a good one;)
no i was mainly just curious how you nailed the exposure like you did...i wasn't sure if maybe you had a filter of some sort on there...my guess was HDR, but i like the way you didn't give it that ultra crazy contrasty look

Yeah, I don't like over-doing HDR's - I used 3 exposure levels on this particular set, but when I'm tone mapping I just really pay attention to the saturation/light direction and curves. And usually I do use a Circular Polariser filter for this lens, but I take it off when doing HDR - Just a normal UV Filter :D
I do a fair amount of post work for selective coloring and dodge/burning too! Maybe that explains it.
Anyway.. I wonder if the new Wigma is going to be any good - It doesn't seem all that different apart from the aperture change and the new "elements" in the glass? Maybe I'm missing something.

How often do you need a UWA for low light unless its a long exposure?
Not worth the upgrade in my eyes. Seeings my 10-20 has been perfect since I got it out of the box.

The first was on Bruny Island, Tasmania:

The second was on the Tessellated Pavement, Tasmania:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=-43.008758,147.933043&sll=-43.008758,147.933043&sspn=0.006975,0.013089&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.017639,147.927217&spn=0.055789,0.104713&t=k&z=14
Those are incredible! Would you be kind enough to share the EXIF and what you did in PP??
The isthmus was manually exposure blended with three exposures, two stops apart, taken at about 7pm (a bit before sunset).
Exposure time (average): 1/400 sec
F-number f/10
Lens focal length 20 mm
ISO speed rating 100
The tessellated pavement was a 3 shot, 2 stop each way, HDR using photomatix and with the black and white points set to zero. The resultant 16bit tiff was then adjusted heavily with curves to get something realistic.
Exposure time (average):2 sec
F-number f/10
Lens focal length 11 mm
ISO speed rating 100
Both were sitting on a tripod etc.

After hearing all the talk about how you could get a fuzzy copy I decided to buy my sigma 10-20 locally at cameras west in downtown Seattle. I was surprised to hear they offered a 30 day return policy. He let me try it out in the store, set up my laptop right there on the counter to view pics.
After having waited 3 weeks to exchange my brand new defective 50d with b&h, it was refreshing to know I had a good local store.
This lens is every bit as good as it appeared on this forum. I am totally in love with what it (and the 50d) can do. These pics are from a climbing trip to Vantage, Wa. on the Columbia River near the Gorge Amphitheater. There are more photos in this animated flash slideshow, though I was switching between my sigma 10-20 and a sigma 18-125 depending on how far away my subject was.

this one is a bit overexposed. I'm learning that my 50d needs to be set 2/3 stops underexposed in shutter mode.
http://www.websterart.com/img/IMG_7735.jpg
http://www.websterart.com/img/IMG_7818.jpg
I have noticed that it is harder to do manual focus with the 10-20. I think it might be the nature of wide angle. Fortunately, my 50d can see better than me so I leave it on auto focus.

Karizmatik, nice shot of the couple. Colour and composition are pretty good I think, but I think the flares (is that the right word?) are just a tad distracting. I think it would be an easy fix in photoshop, and would add that much more to the shot......Just my two cents. ;)

I actually like the sun flare, which was the reason it was added to the shot - I had a CPL that I angled the light inward to that point to create it, so it wasn't by accident.
Your the first to comment badly on it too, everyone else has loved it, including the couple who paid for the session.
And yes, some simple cloning would get rid of it - But again, it's there from choice, not accident.
So kudos on the 2 cents, but it'll be staying. ;)

Over all I do like the shot, it was just the flare I wasn't big on. But that's just me.......Some shots I like it in, and others not so much.......And some, I just have to look at long enough and I begin to like it....hehe......perhaps this is one for the later for me.
But really, if you like it and the couple liked it, then that's what matters the most right? :)
I've looked at the other shots you've posted and think they're pretty good too.

It's actually quite funny, because I usually hate sunflares and do my best to avoid them, hence me forever watching my lighting angles and having a CPL handy -- But it just looked right in this one for me, you know? lol
I do appreciate the comments though! And thanks, glad you liked the other shots.

Nice use of HDR - very natural!

Thanks... I typically don't do HDRs but some of those situations absolutely had to have it and I didn't want it to be the super fake HDR

Wow SamHunter, that are some crazy sport shots... and with great distortion correction!
Did you have any trouble with exposure? Was the gym bright enough... I kinda find my Wigma a bit slow in low light..
Here are some quick test during this early spring (finally!) period :)
I'm having hard time correcting the distortions.. any tips?

It is really slow in low light, we all know that. But this was the NCAA Sweet 16, is was very bright. Also, I didn't have to worry about it being slow to focus because I manually focused

One from last weekend. Fairly high compression on this one so I could get under the 150kb limit.
