Mast3rChi3f, on the waterfall photo, try more waterfall and less foreground, I think that will add to the image.

I like your shot...wonderful colors. The only change I would look at is to back off on whichever adjustment(s) that added the halo/glow around the heads of the kids, especially the boy's head. Of, you know, it might be my eyes and not your shot/edit. It's been a long night and no sleep so maybe, never mind? ;)

No matter it is an excellent shot for sure...they look like the two of them are having fun.

Well I have a softbox and all that good stuff but this was just on camera with the Stofen Omnibounce

So... Stofen on, direct flash? ETTL?

If so, I'ma grab one tomorrow!!

SamHunter
25th of April 2009 (Sat), 11:53
Stofen on with the flash angled at maybe 45 degrees (not right at the subject and not pointing perpendicular) and yea ETTL after I exposed for the background

I only recently got mine and it was only like $13 so really there wasn't much risk involved

Really? That works outside? :S

Wouldn't it just disperse upwards, seeing it's not at the subject?

Weird. I'll def give this a go though. And when you say exposed for the background, you mean on your camera right? Just did 2 steps under normal exposure so the background came through and used ETTL fill?

(Finally, someone's brain I can pick )

Well the Stofen is designed to take the light and bounce it everywhere, so it doesn't work right if you point it right at the subject. The flash hits the plastic and disperses in all directions.

Basically I got the correct settings for the sunset and then when I focused on the dog the ETTL did the rest

It's well worth the wait. Two things that I think are a must for this lens are a CP and the Cokin P filter system.

This is an edit from our trip to Colorado back in August.

i recieved mine 2 days ago and its been fun playing with it. im looking into filters but ive read mixed reviews when using filters. CP may distort your image with dark spots on the pic at 10mm. what do you guys recommended since you guys already have this lens for a while. i just want a filter to protect the front from water and debris. CP filter is nice, but i dont know if i want to deal with dark spots?

HankScorpio
29th of April 2009 (Wed), 13:33
I've had no issues with a Hoya Pro1 CP with low profile frame at 10mm. I personally hate the use of filters for protection (prefer insurance and not permanently shooting through a window) so I don't know what to recommend for that.

Wow. I've been browsing through this thread and was undecided between Canon 10-22, Tokina 11-16 or the Sigma. The shots taken with the Sigma look consistently more pleasing to me. What I don't know is whether everyone in this thread is doing more post processing to bring colour and snap to their pictures or is this due mostly to the lens. I'm leaning to the Sigma but wonder whether the difference is mostly in the post processing.

I have a Canon 40D.

Karizmatik

Post Processing is a huge part of Photography, regardless of lenses IMO.

To get the sort of results the people in this thread do, no matter if you were shooting with the Canon, Tokina or Sigma, you'd need processing to get the same results.

^ This.

I've shot on the 10-22 and wound up buying the Sigma. There is no perceptible difference, when it comes down to it. And Abe's sells the Sigma for 419, or even less when you use one of their coupon codes.

So, that's just to say, you're saving 250 (used mine to snag another 430ex ii) and you're getting the same darn thing. Some folks have even claimed the Sig's build quality is better than the 10-22's.

brecklundin
24th of May 2009 (Sun), 13:36
Something to remember when comparing the 10-20 vs. 10-22...the IQ and builds are no different, but the Sigma is an EX build which gives the buyer, in the US for a non-gray market copy, a four year warranty. Canon only offers one year warranties. To me that is a very big difference.

What a neat shot!! I like the composition, exposure and all. The lone hiker on the top of the hill is what seems to make the shot work...nice!

HankScorpio
24th of May 2009 (Sun), 13:37
Plus, at a push you can use the Sigma on a 1.3 crop too (above about 12mm) whereas Canon's simply won't mount without major surgery. I've even used mine on FF film bodies with a touch of vignetting at 15mm.

Cheers brecklundin - I haven't been using this lens a lot recently what with the Sigma 30mm & 70-200mm f4L, but after using it all day yesterday in the Brecons with a CPL I fell in love with it again!
