Here are a couple shots I did with this lens. Its a pretty good lens for the money. The Canon 10-22 is better but this Sigma 10-20 does the job its asked of.

Hi guys,
I have to say first up that most, if not all photos here are stunning work!
I have been using this lens for almost a year now and have been extremely happy with it. It was my first choice of lens in addition to the lesser kit ones with the XSi 450D. My work is mainly storm related but I have found it performs well in most scenic areas of photography. I can tell you first-hand that it stands up to the absolute worst weather conditions, well other than being hit by lightning lol? The weight is a real plus for me. I've been in situations where my 450D and kit lenses have actually been blown over on a tripod (that wasn't extended) only sitting 50cm off the ground! Didn't happen when I mounted the Wigma up!
Anyway I'll stop blabbering and throw a few images up from the last few months of using it...

Hi DreDaze,
No worries at all! I'm taking this from memory as all my original shots with exif data are in disc storage lockdown due to moving house, but I rarely stray with settings unless there's still sunlight available. Ready for a novel...

Basically I have the Sigma (or whatever lens I need to frame my photo nicely) to infinity focus and use 100ISO at f8 (going up to f16 if the bolts are very close) 99.9998% of the time. My exposures vary from 4seconds to 25seconds, of course clouds blur severely during storms above the 15sec exposure time but some people have a preference for that? I adjust my exposure times with lightning frequency also as some storms fire close CG bolts sporadically and I'd hate to blow a shot out with too much light. As a rule I never use a shutter control/remote or Bulb time as there is absolutely no need for it. It's just one more thing to forget in the panic to get setup as a monster storm approaches. Keep things simple.

The trickiest and MOST FRUSTRATING part of lightning photography is shooting it in the sunlight ie; in mid to late afternoon. If you are good enough you can set the exposure still using the above settings 100ISO, f8 and Infinity focus with the EV metre, allowing the camera to predict exposure needed, however I like to go a step or two back towards -1 to give nice cloud colour contrast. You can see this evident in some of my daylight work. I figure if I have to correct it later in photoshop my camera skills aren't up to scratch. It takes some time to reproduce what you are seeing out there on screen but it can be done given enough practice and time (and an awesome Canon camera!). A friend of mine recently tried using those darkening filters and they seemed to work okay but darkened the corners somewhat - again having to correct it in photoshop but it was still noticable. He was getting a 1-2second exp. when I was still shooting at around 1/60th!

Now a word of caution.. I understand storms VERY well having been in them and around them for many years now. If you feel you aren't safe while shooting then you probably aren't. Best to stay in your car or shoot distant storms (like my first image of the three) until you feel more comfortable. Dont be the highest thing around! I usually sit on my shoe heels as close to the ground as possible and have no metal objects on me -jewelery, watch, mobile phone etc. But yes, definitely err on the side of caution at all times!

Hope this helps a little!
Take care,
Shauno

Hi Stian,
I took the pic while hiking in Harriman state park of NY on a rainy day. A tripod was not used because it is hard to carry.
Exif :
Shooting Mode: Aperture-Priority AE;
Tv: 1/40;
Av: 8.0;
ISO: 200;
Focal: 20mm;
WB: Auto;
I made a few adjustments in photoshop including crop and sharpening. Hope this is helpful.

don't think it's worth the price difference in my eyes...if i was spending as much as the canon i'd look at the tokina 11-16mm 2.8 maybe

I have used both. I hired the 10-22 to see if i would use that FL range... loved it then went to buy one right at the time the lens prices went up.. :( So i bought the Sigma. I've printed images from both to 18x12 and you would be hard pushed to see the difference.

I have managed to continue to use this lens with a 1.4X teleconverter, which avoids all vignetting and keeps its wide at a focal length of 14mm.

This is weird, because in this review (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison-film.ht) it is always vignetting and on dpreview too. And HERE (http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=23905) the Sigma is always vignetting on a 5D too!

I've not had an issue over 13mm on my 1V and 30V.

I can't prove it as film doesn't record EXIF but this was shot at 14mm on my 1V with 400ISO Delta pushed to 1600.

there is the cheapest option being the COKIN system;
the higher brands such as Lee or HiTech;
and the higher end SinghRay filters.

That's not a bad choice. The WS6 is a great package and the LS1 is a much better engine to start building off of. I got a great deal on my Mustang, but I wish that I had a TA sometimes. I don't care for the Camaro's, but the TA is a nice car.

Must be a difference between digital and film then..

Interesting.. I just popped it on my ELAN and looking through the viewfinder the major vingetting is gone just under 14mm. And on the ELAN at 13mm or so looking at the walls in the room has about the same field of view as 10mm on my 30D. So it appears you really can't go much wider on FF then you can [AP-S] digital with this lens.

Canon 10-22 $749
Sigma 10-20 $479

That's $270 savings. Even with the current $50 rebate it's still $220 cheaper and not a big difference in IQ.

I don't think there is anything really "wrong" with this lens in the first place. Not for the price! As you can see there are many spectacular photos on here taken with the lens. It's fast focusing, the short focal length is great in low light (f/3.5 not really nessesary IMO) I've shot in a church with this lens (hand held) and it was keeping up to the 17-55 f/2.8 IS on my other camera. This is my only lens in my collection (aside from the 85mm) that I have no desire to upgrade due to some sort of limitation.

no...that waterfall shot though is pretty much the exact same in any photo ever taken of it..so maybe you're confusing that one with someone elses, there's no beach access apparently(i want to take a shower under that waterfall at some point in my life)...that could be what you're thinking of though...

last time i posted shots from point reyes area of the california coast...these are from the big sur area...

edit: i just realized my monitor is pretty poorly calibrated though i think..cause in windows they look a lot more contrasty than the posts here...now i'm adding contrast in photoshop...i guess i'll have to always go into photoshop to see how they really look

I was shooting ISO1600 (had a few shots at ISO800). Some of the shots were as slow as 1/10 but due to the short focal length they were still pretty sharp. This was on my gripped 400D which seems to be a really good weight balance with this lens. I'm not able to do this with a standard zoom unless it has IS.

I just bought this lens and i took a few pics with it. I allready own the 60mm macro from canon and the tamron 18-270vr. My first impression of the sigma 10-20 is that it does not feel quit sharp. Could that be because i am used to these two other lenses? To exclude my thoughts, can someone tell me how i can test this lens on sharpness. Just tell me what i should shoot and i will post that. I really appreciate any respons.

It is not that sharp wide open but if you shoot with a higher aperture, it should be sharper. Have you tried that?

Seconded, Though my copy is pretty good wide open from 15mm up, 10mm is pretty soft wide open, i suspect because of the very wide angle of view..

I generally shoot at f/8 with this lens, it peaks about there to f/11

I have not had it long but I very seldom check any of my lenses at 100%. First thing I do it take it out and use it for what it is meant for, if I am happy with the prints than I am set, if not I will go into further investigation.

Went out earlier to catch the sunset, not the best of sunsets but spoke to the owner of the property and he told me I am welcome to come shoot there anytime so that was cool. :)

I would say after straightening and cropping out the filter holder it would more likely be about 14mm but still wide enough.

I found this lens sharpened up really well by increasing the contrast, highlights and decreasing the shadow sliders in DPP.

Just a thought.
