are you sure that's not for the newer f3.5 version?

nope it's the 4-5.6!

But price on ALL lenses are rediculous in Canada. I just don't understand why there isn't more of a price difference between Canon and Sigma.

Future Shop seems to be over priced on alot of things anyways, from my experience.

I'm looking at possibly getting this lens or the newer version from Photo4less (Sigma4Less). For the most part I've heard pretty good things abut this place, and the price is cheaper than pretty much anywhere.

Can someone tell me about any differences with the new version and this one apart from the constant aperture

Geoff_Shawcross
12th of August 2009 (Wed), 06:25
There isn't much more difference than that. I believe that they changed some of the type of glass that's in it as well as the lens having a larger diameter. Other than that, I don't think there is much else for difference. I don't think you could go wrong with either version really.

According to the Sigma website, the number of aperture blades has been increased from 6 to 7, the new version has one less element and takes a bigger filter. The zoom action also appears to be different.

The new one take 82mm filter size.. that's kinda lame. At one time I had all my lenses- Sigma 10-20, 24-60, and 70-200 f/2.8 that all used 77mm filter size.. that was nice!

I don't mind sharing. Not much PP was done actually, after converting I only spent a couple minutes in PS Elements. I duplicated the images and tweaked the BG with Topaz Adjust, contrast, saturation, and thats about it. Tweaked the 2nd layer "of myself" than erased the portion of the 1st layer to show the "not so dramatically Topazed" me.

I ask this because i own a copy of this lens since a few weeks and i am really wandering if it's sharp enough... a few posts in this section i allready made, but had no respons.

I just purchased the 10-20 F3.5 from Lozeau in Montreal was around 850.00 plus tax also required the 82mm UV filter for another 185.00 so by the time I got out of there was over the 1000.00 now I hear a circular polarizer is required for this lens unless you and HDRI your pics and tweak them due to blown out highlights so the $ just go on and on LOL  Oh by the way thats Canadian $

hey hughes...not every pic will have blown highlights...if you shoot away from the sun you should be perfectly fine...HDR is a good technique for when there are really bright, and really dark spots all in the same scene, because it's too hard for the camera to expose everything properly...but for the most part you shouldn't Have blown highlights as long as you compose them well, and avoid shooting into the sun

Damn that works really nice (with a good photographer of course).
What kind of holder do you use?
I'm considering buying a ND or GND filter, but I'm not sure if I should buy a screw in filter or a holder system (much more expensive).
I keep hearing about the Lee filter system, but it's not a very easy to get brand here in The Netherlands.

This FL is great for "in your face" type of photos. Here is one from my friend's e-session pics (It could have been a Canon 10-22 for all I know, I just know the exif says 10mm with a 40D)

Has anyone else got .. what seems to be, Mold growing inside their front element?

It doesn't affect my photos thankfully but I have about 4-5 little 1mm dots on the outer side of the front element and I have no idea what it is. I thought it might be sand to begin with, but how the hell could 4-5 perfect little pieces get in there and stay there? They aren't moving, etc, etc.

Sound like something I should cash my warranty in for now while I can or what?

Not needed. Take two exposures, one for the sky, one for the foreground, then blend the two layers using an alpha mask in photoshop. The result is the same as a grad filter, and you get more control.

is that what you did here?...i always thought that to get that look with the waves you needed a shutter of at least a few seconds or so...i might have to get out and give this a try...i usually do HDR to expose for the sky, and foreground on my sunset shots, so i know about getting good results like that

thanks for the tips

I meant in my reply that you don't need graduated neutral density filters in order to expose the sky correctly. A blend as described usually ends up looking better than HDR in my view.

You do need a shutter speed of at least a few seconds to blur the water. I have used one (and a polariser) for the waterfall shot, which was taken during the day. The second shot has a polariser only, just to enhance the reflection off the water.

There is no need to buy any filters to go and take some seascapes. The final three don't have any filters. Turn up at your location (preferably rocks and some swell) 20-30 minutes before the sun goes down. Use this time to determine the best locations for shots whilst you can still see clearly. When the sun touches the horizon it is time to start shooting. Some time after sunset it should be dark enough to get the long exposure without any filters. Stop shooting when the required exposure time hits a few minutes. You usually have about a 45 minute window. When it is a full moon it is possible to shoot all night. Bring a torch so you can find your way back.

An ND will give you more time for longer exposures before the light disappears. It is also useful for shots of waterfalls and the like. A polariser is useful, but hardly essential. A decent tripod is more important. Don't be afraid to get your legs wet.

All at 10mm, the rest can be found HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26860905@N06/sets/72157622546130746/). There are some in there taken with a 50mm but they are obvious.
