Great set Fabio! The first is definitely HDR right?

...and these pics make me feel that I really need to get out more and take photos - I live in London, but hardly ever bother to travel the 6 miles into town! How lazy is that!! :D

Thanks pridash and yes, the first is an HDR (made by Photomatix).

I've the same problem here... I definitely shoot more ofter on vacation then in my city. :D

So just the single RAW just processed differently each time and then merged?

So just the single RAW just processed differently each time and then merged?Yep, even with the last version of Photomatix there is no need to produce multiple raw files.
Just drag the file on and it do itself.

The results of a tone mapped image do not really compare to that of a real HDR photo. There might be a HDR "look" to it, but it will lack many of the details that make HDR great.

Thanks Will (and great photo btw)! I haven't yet tried HDR so will try bracketed photos first anyway.

Thanks!

Here is a photo which is Tonemapped "single image HDR"
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx291/themadmanazn/BrushatDuskTonemapped.jpg

Here is a photo made into HDR with the previous un-tonemapped image being the 0 exposure and then adding a +2 and a -2 exposure image.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx291/themadmanazn/BrushatDuskHDR.jpg

The second true HDR image is richer and the clouds have much greater detail than the single tonemapped photo.

Note: Photo taken with Sigma 10-20 of course, tonemapping and HDR merge done in Photomatix

No idea how Collin does it, but I find "Boutwell Magic Glasses" in the Totally Rad Actions works wonders -- It's similar to the "Clarity" slider in Lightroom / RAW Editor, except it adds some sharpening and more specific depth, IMO.

depends on so many factors...more info is needed for giving you settings

at least as far as i know there is no 'cool setting' to just set it to..unfortunately :)

A few images from my starting real estate photography business. What do you guys think? (I'm a big fan of Scott Hargis' work).

I think this lens is great, although I sent the first copy back to Abe's for exchange due to an area on the left (not the edge though) that was kinda blurrier than acceptable.

so does anyone have the newer version of this lens that is a constant F3.5 ? is it worth the extra dough for the F3.5 across the FL range?

I think i might get this lens and it wouldn't hurt to have F3.5 across the range, but is the lens even sharp at F3.5 at 10mm and 20mm?

does anyone know anything about the new one, lol?

A mix of both. Depends on the room though. But I generally use 2 off camera Canon 430EX units controlled by the wireless transmitter on my 7D, bounced off of walls. I'm getting 2 more cheap manual flash units from Ebay and that should help me to light potentionally dark areas.

I ordered one too. mine will be here tomorrow. I created a pole thread asking people to vote for a few choices of UWA lenses last week, even though more people seemed to like the Tokina and Canon more I went with the Sigma.

Looking forward to posting here soon!

Very nice! Do you have any shots of the Pantheon's dome from the inside with the Wigma?

Blast you people & your beautiful pictures! :D After seeing this thread I decided that I've got to own one of these as well.

At least I mentioned to my wife that I only wanted one thing for my birthday: This lens. So I had to chip in a little of my own "fun money" to cover the difference, but it looks to be well worth it!

ordered this lens on Amazon with the 10% code (got about $47 off!), which is good until the 16th of this month. can't wait for it to come!

I've just placed my order as well. I'm a bargain hunter (got my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lightly used for $300 w/a $100+ CP filter included)... but for the life of me couldn't find many of these on the open market that made sense when you could get a new one from Amazon for $431 delivered!

Hi Alex, what focal length were you using for this picture?

I'm deciding between this & the Tokina 12-24. Believe it or not, the longer end is a factor for me. I'm shooting on a crop, and was wondering if the 20mm end is sufficient enough for full body portraits? Of course, I'd shoot portraits with the camera perpendicular to the ground (not sure what that term is called).

Can anyone post group/full body portraits taken with this lens? Thanks!

AlexMoPhotography
15th of January 2010 (Fri), 16:43
^^ That was at 10mm. I love shooting wide.

If the long end matters to you more, then just go with the Tokina 12-24 so you don't have to worry about egg-heading all the time.

Like you mentioned, I try to keep my Sigma leveled with the horizon, or angled up from below for a nice, slimming, leg-stretching effect. :)

Someday I'd like to trade up this lens and my 40D for a 16-35 and a second FF body.

Thanks for the comments PJ, I knew it wasn't exactly straight, but I still think it shows the capabilities of the lens. As for the the sky, thats exactly how it was, and possibly "photoshopping" in a different sky, well, I don't think it would look "real".

Hi,

just to point something out: it seems there are 2 Sigmas 10-20. The f/4-5.6 and the more expensive f/3.5. I've seen no clear distinction on this thread between the two, not to speak of the fact that it (the thread) is about the f/4-5.6. Yet, for the low-light/night photos, the "f" difference might have played a role.

And one more thing: it seems to me that the f/3.5 has a FF mount - like a Canon EF lens. So all guys who have one and switch to, say, a 5D, could actually keep on using it - that is, if I'm right.

this thread is for the f4-5.6 version

this thread is for the f3.5 version: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=712961&highlight=10-20mm

i don't know if too many people own that version...from what i've seen it isn't really any better than the old version

both of the lenses have an EF mount, so they can be mounted to a FF camera, but I imagine both will vignette at 10mm...eventually that'd go away though...i don't really see the f3.5 making much of a difference if you shoot at 10mm most of the time...also it's fairly easy to handhold UWA lenses at slow shutter speeds

I believe you're wrong: see product code * B&H # SI102045DCAF (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381610-REG/Sigma_201101_10_20mm_f_4_5_6_EX_DC.html) on the B&H site and the special note there. The note says: Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with larger image sensor than APS-C size.

The reason I said the other S(W)igma might be different is, this specific note is not present in its desacription. It would seem logical that Sigma manufactured a newer model that is more universally compatible.

they both aren't designed for FF 35mm cameras(the DC in the name denotes for digital cameras or crops)...that's why i said they'd vignette until about 14mm or so...i've put my 10-20mm on my Elan 7e...it will fit on all the canon EOS cameras...it's just that the image circle is designed for 1.6Crops...so you'll see heavy vignetting until you back the lens off a bit

edit:see this post as an example: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=8268209&postcount=2019

if you want ultra wide on a FF camera without vignetting then the sigma 12-24mm is your lens

yes i know but im just too lazy to scroll in through 100+ pages just to look for car pics. im debating towards this or a canon 10-22mm and since im going to do maybe more car photography+urban photography. i wanna know which one performs best (low light, sharpness etc.) i am looking towards purchasing a UWA in the near future and im still gathering my information towards the 2 lens. I saw one for cheap locally and i might go for this one (sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6)

Finally chose a uwa lens and it's been shipped and on it's way to me now. Woohoo!!

It was quite the choice between the tokina 11-16, 12-24 and the canon 10-22. This wasn't even in the running until I actually did some research on it. This thread sealed the deal.

Looking forward to the different perspective.

Well it isnt a car, (i just realize i did'nt shoot enough cars..) but i just wanted to let the world know giant seqoya's (the most right) do not only grow in the USA.... this lens keeps surprising me. It sure isnt a 10-22 canon, but its about 60% of its price also. With some sharpening (not always needed) pictures come out really good!
