Waht do you mean by off? (just dont tell me its a soft copy, i am scared of that since i got it...
Settings were F 8, 1/125, iso100, 10mm

could just be me, or maybe it's just the trees...but it doesn't look all that sharp to me in that shot...see the shot above of the building looks pretty sharp
the car one looks o.k. though...you don't have a filter on it or anything do you?

I remember using the middle focus point. So that could be the case. But these trees are certainly further away than 30 meters. If a shot is made while focussing indefinitely could objects further away than 30 meters be out of focus? I am sometimes struggling with that question...

your car photo and the original size tree one seem fine. but to me the tree one that you posted here does look very soft. If focusing indefinitely, then yes it would make a difference, at least from my personal experience. I tried doing that with fireworks and everything just came out blurry.

UWA perspective rocks my socks off. I really dig the fov. I can see this lens spending a lot of time on my camera.
Too much work next couple of days to go out anywhere interesting but I took this out the back as one of my test shots.

I got my 10-20 from Amazon a little less than two weeks ago (my birthday gift). It's a wonerful lens - super sharp, but I'm honestly having a little trouble figuring out the best way to frame great photos. I've read a few things here and there, looked over tons of the examples in this thread - but I just feel like I've been missing something.
Any specific thoughts or suggestions for getting better shots? I can hardly wait for the snow to melt around here!
Anyway - here are a couple of images I shot yesterday - I don't feel like they're great, but I did feel like I captured "something"
There is a little HDR editing on this one. It was shot with a 3-stop solid ND & 2-stop ND Grad filters, then tweaked with Photomatix & Photoshop CS2.
http://i47.tinypic.com/29pwxz9.jpg
This is an untouched capture - just the lens w/the 2-stop ND Grad filter.

Love the thread!
Now, do I purchase one of my own? I have borrowed 2 of these Wigmas now. One I was over the moon with when I went to Vegas, the other very dissapointed with!
First borrowed lens seemed awesome, sharp enough etc:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4322599603_173d22a1b5_b.jpg
This one though seemed way too soft:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2787/4323324700_2662798db8_b.jpg
Compare with my 18-55 kit lens:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4020/4323322104_5fa1b49654_b.jpg
Close up on the Wig was good though:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2724/4323326680_dddbbcb36a.jpg
So I am deciding whether to press 'buy' and get my own to try out.....
Have to say the build quality is amazing for the price and the colours on a sunny day (rare in UK) are staggering!
I have been in contact with Sigma UK and they say just chuck it back to them and they will adjust so I have to say that is pretty good as way of support etc. Email returned within 2 hours!
Anyone had to do this and been pleased with the results from Sigma?

I thought the light from your neighbor would ruin it but it adds a very nice "aura" feel to it. I tried a shot at start trails last night but failed miserably! I need to buy a new remote, The RC1 gets annoying without being able to lock it..
theague
8th of February 2010 (Mon), 19:10
Chris,
What you're thinking is light are clouds. There are no neighbor lights in either of these shots. The star trail image I posted towards the top of this page has a spike of light coming from the right side of the frame, that's what happened in a few frames in this series so i didn't include them.
Being able to lock the shutter in continuous mode is essential to getting results. I use the RS-80n, I think that's the model. Being able to lock it I can start the process and walk away :)

Nice job dude. I like how it turned out. Did you do this in one shot or did you stack?
Since you are from Seattle I will share my hope. I really want to get a star trail shot from Kerry Park. I just am not sure if it would work.
One shot, like 30 minutes I think. I should have shot it RAW because the wb came out kind of funky... Next time I guess... Goodluck getting that shot from Kerry park, there is a ton of light pollution from the city. You would almost certainly need to stack them to get it done.

I just received my Sigma 10-20, and I've been trying to determine if I received a good copy. Would you guys mind helping me by taking a look at the pictures and seeing if any problems jump out at you?
Reminder: these photos were not at all taken for aesthetic purposes - I just tried to get different elements in the picture to test for sharpness. Thanks!
Photos look ok to me. Nice socks btw, my wife has a pair just like them ;)
btw ; the camera strap made its way into shot 3! My feet do that all the time with this lens.

Yeah I would absolutely stack them anywhere in Tacoma or Seattle. :) I have to work to get 30 seconds in my back yard much less from Kerry Park. I'd probably have to stop down a lot and I would certainly use ISO 50 on the 5D. It's something I want to try next time I'm up there :)

This might be what you mean by "stack them"... but you could also think about filters to get you there. CP or ND filters would definitely make your shutter speed slower

The problem is that I'm trying to capture somewhat faint stars amidst a light polluted scene. So putting an ND filter on there, while slowing the shutter might also reduce the chance of capturing stars.

Here are the two image results I got. I had to split the total exposure into two images due to my neighbors turning their back porch light on about 50 frames into the set. lol

They are stacked, however, I chose to include the overall time in the data on the border. They are 30 second exposures. I tend to aim for 30 seconds just because it's then very easy to calculate how long an exposure is from the number of frames I've stacked. ;)

Love the build quality both rings run smooth and quiet and it looks good on my 500D, the only complaint is that the lens lid don't have enough friction when you grab it with your fingers to take it on or off the lens.
