Not to mention a nice padded bag and hood come stock with it :)
Yes, well that is true, but I'd rather pay for a hood and a bag if the lens was a piece of crap.

Awesome shot! I went back and fourth between getting the Canon 10-22 or the Sigma 10-20. I finally ordered the Sigma and should get it tomorrow. This shot makes me feel good about my decision.
Thank you.
Glad I could be of help, the sigma is a very nice lens. I can't wait to get to the grand canyon now.

Dam! That was a nice shot! Sorry, had to do it, but really, it is a very nice shot. I went to Hoover Dam a few years ago, and I couldn't get that kind of shot without a lot of walking.
Thanks

I, too, keep going back between this lens and the Canon 10-22. The fact that the quality of images is pretty close and the price is not is pushing me again towards the Sigma.
I don't like 10-22 because it corects the distorsions better then Sigma. And call me a freak, but i love those distorsions
Soon, 10-20 will nicely sit on my camera...I'm going crazy waiting for the shippment to arrive :D

Here are a few new photos that I've done with the 10-20 recently. Photos are linked because they're larger than the rules allow (1000px on the longest side mine are, 800px is max allowed)

Yup. For me, distortion is part of the ultra wide experience. Doing in your face shots with the 10-20 at 10mm is a whole lot of fun. We all get to see what we would look like if our head was shaped like a super oval peanut, and all that good stuff.
I like my 10-20. The build quality on the 10-22 I don't think is as good. I debated between the 2, and the money difference didn't really matter. My 10-20 hood fell in water (3-4 feet in the air and then a couple feet in water) the other day, and the thing is still mint, it's unbelievable, the text on it didn't run / smear either. I'm quite impressed. I figured they are both crop only lenses, and eventually I'll probably end up selling it eventually anyway.

If you're undecided between the canon and sigma see the lense tests in the april edition of 'Photograghy Monthly' (UK mag) Several wide angle zooms are compared and the Sigma easily takes the honours.

How likely is it to receive a bad copy of this lens? I'm in the market for a new lens, though I'm not sure which to buy first (limited budget), the 10-20 or the canon 70-200 f4. I do a lot of landscape photography and would love to be able to have the wide reach of an UWA--so I'm leaning heavily towards getting that lens first.

Yes. Without the wide angle holder, you will get vignetting at 10mm (horizontal orientation only). With the wide angle holder (holds only one filter though) it's fine.
You can use the multi filter holder from about 12mm without vignetting.

Yep, that is my main use for this lens probably. Funny enough, that post probably wasn't even that tall, just the ultra wide perspective makes it seem huge when you are shooting that close.

They are so expensive due to the wide field of view they have. To get acceptable results, there is a lot of engineering and special glass involved. It is not impossible to get a lens this wide and fast, the Canon 16-35 is an F2.8, but that lens is both full frame and well over double the price of these. So really, that kind of speed and wide angle is for those with somewhat larger budgets than many. These lens will work for night group shots, but you will need either very still people, decent lighting or a good flash gun. Short of that, a fast standard zoom, such as the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 or the Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS USM will work with some light and a fast prime such as the Sigma 30 1.4 or Canon 50 1.8 or 1.4 will also work in many low light situations, though you will have to foot zoom. Hope that answers your questions and helps you out.

How do you make a front element huge?
Take a lens with a big front element (200 f2.0), and shoot it with an ultra wide.

I'm waffling between this lens and Canon 10-22, or making do with the Sigma 15-30 lens I already have.
Also, please let me know if you consider this too much to ask. I'll understand.

What do you mean, it's straight out of the camera? Actually, as you know I don't have the lens anymore (only bc I found I wasn't using the 10mm that much), but I shoot JPG and/or RAW, depending on what I'm shooting. For these, I believe they were JPG and PP'd through CS2 (basic cropping, levels adjustment, a tiny bit of USM of roughly 0/.4/100). IIRC, I also used Nik Color Efex Pro 2.0 "Complete Edition" digital filters, which is the bomb. I'm just going off of recollection here though! It's been a while since those pics were taken.

It Is... It is part of the B-52 scattered all over Elephant Mountain in Greenville Maine...went down when I was in high school , 63 or 64 I think...very interesting but tragic storey... I think you will have no trouble finding something about it by googling elephant Mountain plane crash....this wheel set was the furthest uphill parts that came from the plane....it hit low on the mountain and all the parts moved up toward the crest... It is a very reverent, although spooky site.

Wow. There was a helicopter crash in the woods near here, but from what I've read there are no remains left (but you can see the crash site on google earth). I wish there was something interesting lying around the woods here. Best I found was an old washing machine.

yes PM... thing was, it was sunny so this spot is like 2 minutes from my house, by the time i got there these darker clouds were just parked right above it. it was funny. it was also like 6:00AM. thats where the glod color comes from... sun was just starting to build and it was shining down from behind me.

Really neat shot :) My only gripe is the halo around the church from tone mapping.

That's a really nice shot. It's mysterious and surreal with an almost painted or animated appearance.
For my taste it's a little oversaturated but very cool nonetheless.

thanks guys!
Angry, The Halo might not be from the tone mapping, it could be the light reflecting off the church onto the clouds... at least thats my story. lol yeah, them halos are hard to avoid in extreme cases like this. I gues its a trade off... as i use this stuff more i will see if there are any tricks to this.

i notice there have been lots of great pictures posted here with the sig1020 on a 30d.. however a good deal of reviews online have mentioned problems focusing with the 30d (not so much the 350/400 models).
i also read that there were 2 versions of the sig1020, one with serial number 102, and a newer release with serial number starting at 103, which addressed many problems.
I also read quite a few reviews that described how people would have to send the lens to sigma to have it corrected a few times before acceptable. I would have to be involved in that sort of process... any light to shine on this? Perhaps it's been addressed already, since many of these posts with complaints are from pre-2006, to right when the 30d came out.

Very nice , it is a really stunning shot , this lens may replace my Tmaron 17-50 , whihc I do not use often , I dont need the F2.8 but I want go super wide.
Thanks for showing me some interestingly different world, never known the UWA is so so so fun and exciting, in fact , I though it would be super boring , was totally wrong...

The 10-20 isn't EF-S. It has a smaller image circle, but it will still mount. You can crop out the black edges if you take a 15mm shot with a 5d and have an extremely wide 7-8mp shot still. I think anything down to 13mm is usable on a 1D. I plan on using my 10-20 with my 35mm camera this fall.

At 16mm, it's just as wide on a 5D as it is at 10mm on your 20D.

It might do i think but will vignette bad , i might be wrong, but it was designed for a crop camera.

Reading a review in Pop Photo said it would only vignette at 10 but 11 on be fine. Still, depending on how long that'll be before going FF, you could get it and sell it later to get the Sig 12-24.

or keep it with your XT if you won't sell it, many here have full frame and crop camera, so maybe you can use it with crop camera if you keep it.

^That too. I just assume you'd switch then go back and buy a crop again if you felt you needed it. Although, I love my 20D too much so if I make the switch I'll just have to save and sell nothing...except useless junk in general.

Thanks for the response. I guess I will not get around the high ISO, as I am having a hard time for the pix to turn out the way I see them using flash. So I opt not to use it for 90% of the shots at the shows. The lighting at some of the manufacturers is far from desirable...tuff lighting...
Again, thanks for the feedback!

Pick up a big-flip it. I think they work quite well for auto shows and other low-light indoor events where you want things to look natural.

Took my new 10-20mm to the beach today and I've got to say that I'm in love with this lens. I'm stunned at how sharp them images came out and the field of view is amazing. Here's a couple that I thought looked alright. The colours are a bit odd because I'm an idiot when it comes to colour profiles so they look kind of yellow, when editing the RAW they look sublime. I can't belive how much I love this lens. I look forward to taking it on many adventures.

However I have had some really bad shots when I have shot at angles. aaagh. Hey Adam, I was in London last year. I love American surburbia. I am off to Monument Valley this weekend. It's very similar to Australian suburbia.. so in that, I agree, even though it's quite similar, it's great. I don't like London or British suburbs to be honest... not enough space!

I'm going to try something else, too costly with international shipping & taxes to be playing the lens lottery. I found this copy to be alright at up-close subjects but anything far away/infinity was horribly mis-focused. I bought the lens for landscape shooting and even at F/11 nothing was sharp. Looking through this archive there are stellar examples from stellar copies, unfortunately I just won't be taking the chance again. Time to save up my pennies.

I think the concensus seems to be that the Canon is a tad sharper, but the Sigma is better built. I've not done a side-by-side comparison of the two lenses, though. The Sigma comes with a hood and case, while those are extra expenses for the Canon.

Tony, what kind of B&W conversion did you use ? Does the CS3 include some kind of new tools for such manipulations, something that was not present in the previous version ?
Personally I like to experiment with channel mixer. It's kinda complicated to get the effect I want sometimes, but I still think it's the best.

Hey Robert, that's what I'm afraid of. I have a Sigma 17-70 that I love on my 10D, but it doesn't work so well on my new 1D (vignettes all the way to 70mm). I think I'll have to get a 17-40L for the 1D and keep the 17-70 on the 10D.
Tony-s,
I'll have a look at the 12-24. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, I used to use the Channel mixer as well, but CS3 has built in B&W with several presets that represent the use of filters in the film days - without losing light during exposure, of course. I now only carry two filters with me - CPL and ND. Here's the B&W pane with and without the pull-down.
