After viewing hundreds of these photos I'm glad I have one arriving Friday. I ordered it mainly for landscapes. The problem I have around here is trying find scenery worth shooting, especially in a winter without snow. I've seem some awesome landscapes shots on this thread.

Wide angles are for a lot more than landscapes! This page is a favorite of mine: How to Use Ultra-Wide Lenses (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-use-ultra-wide-lenses.htm)

That link above does help. I like shooting landscapes too, but I guess only the person who shoots the landscape knows how amazing it is, but others view the image like a regular photo because they weren't there at the time of the picture, if that makes sense. Have to use the distortion to your advantage to give it a cool perspective. Lot of cool pictures can be had with the lens, I barely got mine and haven't had a chance to try it out.

Here's another photo, I like how the lines on the ground give that wide angle look.

Does anyone on this thread regret not getting the Canon 10-22? I'm currently deciding between the two. How does the Sigma handle flare & do with starbursts?

I just finished the reading material posted (yep, already) and see that the writer recommends against using a polarizer with these lenses. Well, I have one coming. Maybe the polarizers have improved since that article was written? What say you?

I had some issues and ended up exchanging for the Canon 10-22. I still think the Sigma is a great lens so you my want to do some research and see which will work best for you.

The link below is the first pic I took with the Sigma 10-20 when I got it (posted earlier in this thread). I was so close to the truck in this picture I could reach out and touch it. The 10-20 did an AMAZING JOB! I never would've thought to use a wide angle for a pic like this if I hadn't read the link I posted above on how to use wide angles.

It's not an issue with the quality of the filter but how the filter works. The affect of a polariser differs depending on it's angle to the light source and increases as you approach it's maximum at 90 degrees to the sun (shooting into the sun a polariser has no effect at all.). If you use a polariser on a standard to telephoto lens it covers a distinct area of the sky and so you get a uniform effect across the image. If you use a wide angle lens like this the field of view covers a variety of polarising effects so it can end up like you have fitted an ND grad sideways to the lens as the sky deepens in blue or differing levels of reflection are removed etc.

Sneaked out of work early today and got home before my wife saw the package. It's been a good day. I went out and took a few quick shots of the house and grass to test for sharpness. I'm happy to say, it was sharp from corner to corner and ege to edge. However, with the few shots I tried, my 30D displayed the aperture as 0.0 and turning the wheel did nothing. It also wasn't displaying the AF points. I had just got the 30D so I wasn't sure what to suspect, even though I had tested the 30D out a couple days ago. I then mounted a different lens on the camera and had no problem. I remounted this one and all was fine. The exif on the first pics when things were weird, displayed the Av as 1.$. That's right - 1.$. I'm thinking the lens wasn't making 100% contact with the body. Anyway, all is good, even though I'm not convinced yet to keep the cpl. If a person doesn't go too intense, it isn't real bad.

I went out to play with my new baby today, and even though there is lack of scenery here due to no snow, green grass or leaves, at least I found out I love how the lens performs. The only pic cropped is the one of the goofy goat. He got a little too close and personal and I was afraid of him snotting up my lens, so there is some camera movement here. :)

It's just a lot of photoshopping. I made 4 shots of my daughter, standing on the white shelf, one with straight legs (head down), and two more with each leg against a wall. Then I moved her up to the ceiling with all the shadows, and carefully copied two bent legs with shadows, from other two shots. I used one flash bounced from a wall. The idea wasn't original - I was inspired by http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukesharratt/5487140983.

Just got mine in the mail earlier today. Not sure how soon I will get outside to try it out, been busy working on grad school applications through until next week. Going on a snowboarding trip with in February with my buddies to Le Massif in Quebec, so I'd like to get some practice in with this lens prior to heading out there :)

Great build quality, compared to my other lenses, which wasn't a surprise, but welcome none-the-less.
I know from specs that the MFD is 24cm, but I didn't notice that marked on the lens anywhere like Canon lenses do. Not a big deal but I don't always remember each lens' specs if I'm swapping them out.

My backyard at midnight the other night, under a full moon. I put my 60D on a tripod, set it to manual mode, wide open aperture, and 30" exposure.
In the uncropped pic I can see stars. There's a planet on the right above the house, my neighbors with holiday lights on all nights.

I was amazed how much color came through despite how dark it was out.

Would you guys say this lens seams to be a bit flat on color with out any filters? I just received my copy from B&H and the IQ looks great (no real test yet), focusing looks good but I notice the color just seems to be a bit tuned down from say, my 70-200 f4L (which might not be a fair comparison). I do love the lens though. Very impressed by the build quality.

Thanks

It has a different look than the F4 L's. It's more film-like and a touch warmer. A quick drag to the left on the Lightroom 3 tint slider will make it look like a Canon if that's your thing. I've come to actually prefer the film-like colors for UWA scenics.

I use a CP on my 10-20 at all times unless there's blue sky showing at 12mm or wider. You get nasty, unfixable, uneven color saturation of the sky if you do (common on UWA with CP's at those focal lengths).

If you want to save a few bucks, the Kenko Pro-1 Digital 77mm CP is as good as any and you can get it for $67 here:

http://maxsaver.net/Kenko-77mm-PRO1-Digital-WIDE-BAND-Circular-Pol-Filter.aspx

This is known as "Hoya" in the states and goes for $150. And this unit has a very rugged build.

So I've decided I want this lens. Would you guys take the chance on a used one off ebay? I'm torn on the idea because of the apparent left side softness.

Thoughts?

I bought mine on eBay. Buy from a reputable seller, ask questions about the lens before bidding, use Paypal for protection.

I wouldn't buy off eBay, I don't know why, but unless it's a great deal, I'd prefer to buy local where I can test it or off of here. Plus, most on eBay I've seen have been more expensive than what you can find here or locally.

EWR72, great shot! Very sharp.

yeah seems that 400 is about the going rate on there, maybe i'll just look to new since they so rarely come up on here. $80 is not a terrible premium to pay for a 4 year warranty.

$480 for new isn't bad. But there's a chance you can get a bad copy or one that has issues focusing and have to deal with Sigma, but then again a used lens that performs perfectly on one body doesn't necessarily mean it will work perfectly on another persons body. Some people don't register their sigmas, so some used lenses will include an empty warranty card, where you can register it and get the same 4 year warranty as if it was brand new.

Welp, I just bought one on amazon I can't wait to have some fun with something this wide :) Im sure it'll be great for the trip to China in March.

If I get one that's left-soft I'll just ask amazon for an exchange, they are typically very good about that sort of thing.

When you test it out, make sure that you are completely paralell to what you are shooting or you wil drive yourself crazy trying to decide if there is side softness. Best thing is if you think one side is softer than the other; shoot some shots upside down and check if the softness then shows on the flip side. Also keep in mind that a certain amount of corner softness is normal in UWA's.

Been taking a break from Photography for a while now...... went for a wander down the local golf course today with the camera and my least used lens and took some random shots. Not least used cause I hate just cause I lost the passion for photography for a while.

No one playing today, Brisbane is about to flood again but found this golf ball in the bushes and setup a HDR image. Im a bit out of practise with my editing. :)

Woo! got my wigma tonight, I can tell I'm going to have a lot of fun with this lens (as soon as I stop pixel peeping to be sure it's clean on the left side), It has a lot of potential. It's technically my first new lens, all others have been second hand so I'm pretty excited.

One of my two cats loves to jump from couch to couch, and I was just thinking the other day "I bet I can catch him in the act" as I had the 70-200 mounted to the camera on the tripod across the room, then I realized, I could get below him with this ultrawide! Nothing spectacular, just fun. I had to estimate and pre-manual focus, looks like I didn't get it quite right.

I like this.

Judging by the way the lights look, Im guessing you left the aperture somewhat open for these? Also, was that waterfall light-painted by you?

edit: nevermind, just tested for myself, I must have been thinking of how long exposure light sources looked on the 17-40, not this one ;)

Wow. If you call that a lack of nearby subject material, I invite you to visit rural southern Indiana. Cornfields, power lines, and collapsing barns can only be shot so many times. I have to go at least a mile to find a cow or a clay pot. lol

But I have something else in the works for this lens. I do own a miata and I'm working on a car camera rig that I can mount my 7D to and drive down the road and take some shots of myself with the remote while driving. Hope to have the rig figured out in a couple days. I have the shots in my head - now just to make them real...I can't wait!

It's the only non-Canon lens I own.

Same here. Love it.

First post in this thread!

Was originally looking to replace my 10-20 in advantage for the Tokina 11-16, but this lens seems to perform pretty well!

Is that the 10-20 focused down to about 3 inches?

While I didn't check the exact measurement website says - Minimum focusing distance of 24cm (9.4”) at all focal lengths

I was pretty close to the min as I don't have a great deal of room with my desk at work being "U" shapped; iPhone photo from behind and above makes it look much closer.

I wonder if that is 9 inches from the sensor and not the front element. I haven't tried focusing that close with this lens. For some reason I thought this was more like 18 inches on this lens. My 17-70 "macro" does about 2.5" but this is news to me. I'll have to give it a try. :-)

Looks like you are correct;

Makes the object 6" from the lens; that is pretty close for a non-macro lens.

Headed out tomorrow to shoot some wildflowers; will be interesting to see how this shines with a spacious mountain backdrop

What filters are you guys using on this lense for everyday use if any at all? Haze, polarizer? New user but long time canon owner. Unfortunately I have neglected to use my camera for quite some time and have fallen behind on the digital side of things. so please excuse the noob post but want to order this lens with filters at the same time.

I have full set of filters for my film lenses but I know from research that the digital side was different when it comes to the haze and uv filters.
